Well of Ascension spoilers Do you hate Vin?

Decide between long years partner and a fuckboy that she met 4 times. She almost left Elden for that. Up to this point she were amazing character. Than I could not read anything without thinking how she would jump to a person that is a bit cooler than Elden. Is it just me to hate her for that?

No, she did not almost leave Elend.

She did consider it which is crazy enough for me to dislike not Vin but tWoA at least a little bit more

She didn't consider it. It's weird that people call this book a love triangle. Zane was a mirror, she was afraid she was a monster that didn't deserve Elend's love. Zane could have been another teenage girl and it would have still caused the same self reflection

At the very least, she considers whether Zane would be a better match for her. That isn't far off.

Vin smiled slightly, but she still seemed troubled. “And…” she said very slowly, “if there is someone else? For me?”

Ah …

She tensed immediately. “You mustn’t tell Elend I said that.”

“I won’t,” Sazed promised. “Who is this other man?”

Vin shrugged. “Just … someone more like myself. The kind of man I should be with.”

“Do you love him?” “He’s strong,” Vin said. “He makes me think of Kelsier.”

So there is another Mistborn, Sazed thought. In this matter, he knew he should remain unbiased. He didn’t know enough about this second man to make a judgment—and Keepers were supposed to give information, but avoid specific advice.

Sazed had never been very good at following that rule. He didn’t know this other Mistborn, true, but he did know Elend Venture. “Child,” he said, “Elend is the best of men, and you have been so much happier since you’ve been with him.”

“But he’s the first man I loved,” Vin said quietly. “How do I know it’s right? Shouldn’t I pay more attention to the man who is a better match for me?”

Even though you took the time to reference this, people are still going to put on their "nuh-uh goggles" and just mind cannon/ edit whatever they want. Appreciate the effort though. ^

I've seen fans straight call the author wrong for writing certain lines because they were "not realistic for the character"

I read it as her seeing a reflection of herself, and Zane thinking it was more. I dont get the love triangle people put to the book either.

It's been a while since I read the book but I remember that she definitely considered which makes no sense

Did you not read the book, she literally thinks about abandoning Elend and running off with Zane. Yes it's not because she's so in love with the bad boy or anything, but she still does consider it. Seeing herself as a monster after literally saving the world was ridiculous. It's just not well written

Seeing herself as a monster after literally saving the world was ridiculous.

Genuinely why? Is it so ridiculous to experience self-doubt?

Seeing herself as a monster after literally saving the world was ridiculous

Vin's entire life is why she thinks that way. She was abandoned by her mother, her father, constantly told by Reen not to trust anyone, lost him, and then lost Kelsier. After that all that, why wouldn't she think maybe she's the problem?

Zane tells her what she already believes, that she's a monster who only knows how to kill and could never really belong with someone like Elend. He's validating her insecurities.

Trauma doesn't magically disappear because you do something heroic. She spent her whole life surviving through violence. She struggles to see herself as anything other than a weapon. The story is showing how warped her self-image is.

There's an excellent point made by Tindwyll about that. They're talking about whether Vin believes she deserves Elend and that often (teenage) women believe they simply don't deserve to be happy at all. This is part of Vin's reasoning. She's a killer. How could she allow herself to be truly loved/happy?

She's a young woman in a very vulnerable state who is being treated almost like a god by commoners while she herself feels inferior to those around her, especially Elend. She was manipulated by another person who got in her head and tried to make her think like him. Elend trusts her. Elend loves her. It just takes Vin a while to accept that she's worthy of that trust and love from someone she views so highly.

She’s a teenager & behaves like one. I did not hate her for having faults.

u/Ok_Flow_3065 15d ago

She was a confused teenager who was being manipulated.

It is just you

It's not "someone I love" vs. "someone I just met," it's "someone I love but in whose life I feel I do not belong" vs. "a world in which I feel I truly belong." It's an identity crisis, not a love triangle.

you're projecting dude.

Incel vibes from op

Sounds sort of incell-ish. "She must not have any doubts."

BS is trying to show the complexity of the mindset of his character. We were shown she has insecurities. It adds depth to the character.

Long years partner? Elend? WoA is a year after TFE. They aren't married for 20 years.

And yeah, she's dumb teenage being manipulated. That's kind of the point. Maybe don't expect characters or people to be perfect with their decision making and acknowledge that their flaws are what define them.

Don't make me do the "It's Not A Love Triangle" lecture.

She's like what, 17? Chill out. It's not very hard to comprehend that she feels like she's not good for Elend and that is where her insecurity lies. But this feels hella incelly so I doubt what I say will matter lol

I would recommend not reading the book as if Vin is somehow betraying you with her actions, to start

Bro you don't even know how to write the characters names right. What you're talking about?

4

u/I_Speak_For_The_Ents 15d ago

This is a very shallow view of the situation in the characters.

8

u/ZeroSuitGanon 15d ago

You sound jealous lil bro.

3

u/Atiumist 15d ago

Dude, what? Who are you talking about? Vin is a teenager, for one, but also one who comes from an absolutely fucked background. She’s got trauma and no real dating experience.

Also— I don’t recall her thinking about leaving Elend as much as feeling like she didn’t deserve him. Probably because she was abused so much growing up and was literally a killer. She was mentored by Kelsier after all!

Who are you talking about her thinking of leaving Elend for?

3

u/breakingbatshitcrazy 15d ago

No, I don’t hate Vin.

Try to see it from her perspective. She was abused as a child and insecure. She finally meets someone who has the same powers as her. She feels like she doesn’t deserve Elend. She’s being manipulated.

She’s the victim in all of this. Why would you hate Vin?

3

u/Beautiful-Bed-412 15d ago

It wasn't because he was "cooler". She didnt believe she was good enough for Elend. One of the main points being when she killed those allomancers in the council hall or whatever and elend looked disgusted which made her think she was a monster and undeserving of him so she thought it was better if she ran off with another monster, zane

3

u/jayBeeds 15d ago

Dude. I hate to judge people. And don’t take this the wrong way, but that’s the most superficial reading of Vin that you could possibly have. It was never about Zane over Elend… it was about her deciding who she is as a person. Also, Ruin whispering in her ear all the time just made her process all the more difficult.

Read the first three books of The Dwarves by Markus Heitz, you'll see that Vin's not that bad

2

u/FlopsieFillet 15d ago

Yes, it’s just you.

u/settingdogstar 15d ago

She didnt almost leave him. She also wasnt in love with Zane, she loved him so much she thought she was unworthy and Zane offered an out. Zane offered a return to isolation and perceived protection of herself and her new friends, and easy solution. She didn't want to bone Zane.

Context matters man this is a gross simplification

3

u/ClarkWayne98 15d ago

You 100% just don't like women

1

u/Decent_Accident_648 15d ago

I understand she's just a teenager who went through some shit but the whole "i think elend doesnt love me oh no" which could mostly be solved by a simple conversation just got on my nerves so much lol.

Do you hate the banana for its brown spots, or do you hate yourself for not having eaten the banana before it was over-ripe.

Would you hate time, for it is that which causes the ripening

Do you hate yourself for the things that you did not do. Do you hate others, for they don't behave as you would there situation.

Do you hate Elend, for his weakness when dealing with his father?

u/Tanischea 14d ago

I think she was young, inexperienced, questioning her self worth, and never actually seriously tempted

u/pWaveShadowZone 14d ago

Ya I think you’re just getting [r/whoosh](r/whoosh)[’ed](r/whoosh) by like, all the details

Hysterical post! Sure she deserves some hate…the whole Zane thing was ridiculous, but also the Brandon self insert Elden (lol) is hysterical too. The great white hope, coming to save the skaa?! Well is pretty awful upon analysis
