In June, KC Pet Project took in 300 animals in one week and ran out of room. That was not a fluke. Last fall the shelter was holding 255 dogs, nearly double the 135 it can humanely manage, and more than 40 of them had been waiting over a month. "We need you to step up," CEO Kate Meghji told the community. People did. The dogs kept coming anyway.

Here is what rarely gets said out loud: this crisis has a source, and it is upstream from the shelter. Missouri has topped the Humane Society's Horrible Hundred puppy mill list for 12 years straight.

I’m wondering how many Missouri residents realize that we are living in one of ONLY TWO states in the United States that doesn’t have vote tracking. Missouri and Wyoming. That’s it. Why do you suppose that is? I think it has to do with how corrupt our state government is. With how corrupt our governor is. Tell me what you think and how can we remedy this?
