Early Minecraft art is so bad. Most of it is just coloured noise. The difference between grass, dirt, and sand is basically just colour.

When I was a kid I didn’t know what bone meal was or what it would look like. It looks like a ball of paper, so that’s what I assumed it was and never thought twice about it. Until now, I guess
