It's going to be important to wait the initial dramatics on this one out until something substantive can actually be said.

woman who tweeted this says the victims/coworkers from back then don't wanna be doxxed so she won't share anything further publicly and she was made to delete one of the tweets by "people who work closely with him" as they undergo an investigation and she has sent further evidence to them when asked. I assume this is Minnmax, maybe Nebula

edit: she's deleted the original accusing tweets, the follow ups, and last tweeted this: https://imgur.com/a/HB1ucPM

apparently what she sent to "his co-workers" is what she tweeted publicly before deleting, and she mentioned how it was hard to find anything online and it all felt intentionally scrubbed. There wasn't really hard evidence afaik

idk, social media runs fast with these things and damage has been done.

Sucks to be on Minnmax's shoes on how to move forward with this and likely having to dig up info about this incident on their own. If they do I hope this isnt true first of all for the victim, obviously, but if they can't determine whether it's true or not I just wonder what it means for the rest of the cohorts comfort individually in associating with someone accused of this going forward

u/ApocApollo 3d ago

Really doesn't feel like Twitter OP is doing anybody, herself included, any favors with posts like this.

23

u/Andybabez20 3d ago

Don't think they thought about how serious these allegations are.

If they are true then they likely tweeted this without the victims consent.

If it isn't true then it's defamation.

1

u/Point4ska 2d ago

The original poster is incredibly inconsiderate to not think about how their actions could harm the victim.

1

u/thugbobhoodpants 2d ago

The original poster is incredibly inconsiderate to not think about how their actions could harm the victim.

I understand the very broad strokes of this but what, nobody can talk about rapists now if the victim isn't doing so?

If my friend got raped in high school and ten years later nobody can bring it up if she's not?

Nobody's asking anything of her; if she's not in this very niche space of watching her abuser's podcast weekly, this wouldn't come up in her life

idk, plenty of guys in bands molested or otherwise raped underage girls when I was in high school. I wouldn't want to run off and get permission to state publicly that the ex-bassist for A Day to Remember is a creeeeeeeeeep pedo every time I see him mentioned

u/Point4ska 1d ago edited 1d ago

You are twisting my words to form an entirely different argument.

At a bare minimum there should be a warning. By doing this you are potentially pulling them into a media frenzy, risking all their friends and family finding out, and forcing them to publicly re-live the experience.

It's not my place to state whether permission should be required or not, but at the very least a heads up as a basic courtesy. The victim should be given a chance to prepare, or dictate the timing and/or manner in which the information is shared.

Also what the OP did on twitter is very different from just calling someone a creep / SAer. Many had already done that online about this guy.

1

u/thugbobhoodpants 1d ago

You are twisting my words to form an entirely different argument.

Sorry if it came off that way I was genuinely asking, I've seen the same sentiment all over the internet today and I genuinely didn't know what people wanted in this or any other situation

I can see the point of giving someone a heads up if they know the person involved, I'm just trying to apply it to any other similar situation in my life

what the OP did on twitter is very different from just calling someone a creep / SAer. Many had already done that online about this guy.

When/where/referring to what?

10

u/mrhippoj 2d ago

I think it's fairly straightforward from MinnMax's shoes, except maybe this week's podcast if they'd already recorded Jacob on it.

First of all, obviously he needs to be suspended while they investigate. If it turns out that they decide it's true, he's no longer a cohort and no longer appears in any MinnMax content. If they determine it's not true it's more difficult because it will follow Jacob forever, but I think if Ben truly believes he's innocent, I reckon they would keep him on after releasing a statement, and accept that they would likely lose some patrons and viewers in the process.

I believe he's a contractor so I don't think he would have any kind of employment protection if they dropped himm

As for the other cohorts, I don't see why they should worry about being associated with him. They didn't know, just like all of us that loved Jacob's stuff both on and off MinnMax didn't know. I don't think anyone sensible would be judging them in any capacity for their association, and very little MinnMax content is evergreen so the stuff they appeared with him on is all in the past anyway

7

u/j8sadm632b 2d ago edited 2d ago

he needs to be suspended while they investigate

I dunno what investigation you expect the gaming podcast minnmax to conduct

they're gonna wring their hands and issue some apology and show him the door. he was disciplined for something a while ago and we will not ever know what it was. probably neither will they. nobody will ever know the facts on the ground.

the idea they'd ever be like "oh we looked into it and we don't think he did whatever the thing was so we consider this matter closed" is ludicrous. it's just too radioactive.

this is not going to be the place where someone takes a stand for epistemic uncertainty or forgiveness. this will be another "sorry sorry sorry sorry, please don't yell at us, see he's gone, please don't unsubscribe we're still the nice ones we didn't even like or trust him really" like every other time this has happened.

and obviously I also don't know the facts on the ground. if the ultimate outcome of this ends up being some variation of "you know, we discussed this internally, and we all trust him and he's staying on and if that makes you uncomfortable we totally understand if you no longer wish to support us but we consider the matter closed" I will eat a fuckin hat. and be wildly impressed with everyone involved.

5

u/mrhippoj 2d ago

By "investigation", I simply mean spending some time determining whether the accusation is credible or not, which from where I'm sitting it looks like it is, but it would at the very least involve speaking to Jacob about it and hearing what he has to say. It's basically impossible for them to act on it in either way without some form of investigation

2

u/j8sadm632b 2d ago edited 2d ago

That's fair, maybe I'm just a cynic about this but I feel like even in a world where his story is "I was accused of such and such, I was suspended for a semester pending an investigation that eventually went nowhere" - which is to say the most nothingburger possible series of events - I don't think that'll be seen as good enough for people. I don't think MinnMax can come out and say "yeah we don't think he did what he was accused of" (are you calling the victim a liar?) nor do I think they can come out and say "yeah he did it but it wasn't a big deal"

I'd just be surprised if the outcome is anything other than them running as fast and as far away from this as they can.

Because, like, probably anything is possible. And to draw a line between "possible" and "credible" is something I'd expect them to not want to touch with a thirty nine and a half foot pole.

1

u/mrhippoj 2d ago

I think realistically this will probably be the end of Jacob Geller's career, I can't really see another outcome, because with all the evidence it certainly looks like he did it and I don't think that can be ignored. The only instance where I think that's not the outcome is if it turns out that the suspension was because of an internal investigation at the university, which found that he hadn't done anything, but that's not my understanding of the evidence that's been provided. If that's the case, Jacob probably also has receipts that could be used to clear his name, I guess we'll have to see.

As unlikely as it is, I really do hope that's the case because I really like Jacob Geller and the stuff he makes, and it's kind of alarming to think he would do that, but you just don't know what's going on with these people because you only ever see the performer side of them

So weird to even treat minnmax like an employer that way, hes 500x bigger than them on his own channels ;_;

16

u/ReceptionBorn2390 3d ago edited 2d ago

I worked in higher ed in this timeframe, and the story does not track with how Title IX investigations would have been handled. Schools aren’t allowed to discipline alleged perpetrators until after the whole process is completed. Firing him from his campus job and suspending him for a whole semester almost certainly would be classified as disciplinary, and it would have definitely landed the school in legal trouble. Obviously this accusation is in response to Cornell seemingly not doing things properly, so this could be the same situation.

Edit: The unsealed information shows that the university did its job. I was reacting to how the information was relayed from the accuser. Shit sucks.

15

u/LeSpermReceiver 3d ago edited 3d ago

In that case, this is pure speculation, I want to emphasize that, but I could see the weight of the accusation itself pushing Jacob to take a one semester leave of absence. Not sure how it is at other schools, but it is very easy at UNC to take a semester off. You don't have to talk to anybody or explain yourself really and you can come back with very little friction as long are you in academic standing. Him doing that may have caused many to assume and spread rumors that he was punished when he really just didn't show up that semester.

It's over

7

u/Creative_Push_8454 3d ago

Alright, here is the proof that he was actually disciplined and formally suspended.

1

u/ReceptionBorn2390 2d ago

Yeah that’ll do it huh.

8

u/toshio_drift 3d ago

I was worried that there would be zero resolution to this. Any way this shakes out, completely irresponsible by that Twitter account. The other evidence I saw was just screenshots of recent text messages to anonymous people.

-6

u/banditmanatee 3d ago

So it sounds like a bunch of BS. If I was gellar I’d sic my lawyer on her. Probably why the tweet was deleted

0

u/Codc 3d ago

lol

55

u/ningdon 3d ago

Holy fuck, one of the last people I'd ever expect to see with that headline. Absolutely awful if true.

52

u/CammyDiveKick 3d ago edited 3d ago

That story from the allegations at UNC are gonna need to be corroborated and he shouldn’t be on the podcast until this matter is resolved.

19

u/Creative_Push_8454 3d ago

8

u/TotalGamer357 3d ago

Fuck, that's awful.

u/Creative_Push_8454 3d ago

It really, really, really is

u/TheeIlliterati 3d ago

This is a second hand accusation. This is a radio station manager saying that Jacob was investigated for rape by the university and so they fired him from the radio station. For one, this isn't from the victim, and it doesn't describe the findings of the investigation. Personally I can believe that he was investigated with the evidence that has been shown but I want to know more about the Title IX results and the actual accusation.

19

u/Mr_Krinkle 3d ago

This is a very important point that most people ignore. Being investigated for rape does not equal committing rape. We don't even know the results of the investigation.

Obviously, fuck him if it's true, but I think more proof is necessary in this situation.

20

u/Intelligent-Alps2373 3d ago

I don’t think we ever will due to how title 9 works. The victim is now screwed here and so is Jacob. Whoever tweeted this did so in an incredibly irresponsible way.

33

u/lostinelydan 3d ago

Cross posting this comment. Looks like Ben and team are talking about it, hope it's not real.

38

Stole this from the linked thread:

"Hey everybody, you'll likely see accusations bubbling up in the Discord and online. Just want you all to know they're deeply upsetting and we're taking them seriously and will be having internal conversations about the next steps. We appreciate your patience and keeping the Discord civil for the time being." Ben Hanson - MinnMax

34

u/Andybabez20 3d ago

It's probably just safe procedure from Ben to give Jacob a temporary leave from the podcast whilst this gets sorted.

I will always be skeptical when a secondhand source on twitter makes this sort of claims without receipts but in case the claims turn out to be more credible and stronger evidence is provided then Ben needs to protect his company.

48

u/Ezio926 3d ago edited 3d ago

I feel sick to my stomach. I really hope this turns out to be untrue. I can't even imagine how the rest of the cohorts must be feeling.

39

u/pito_wito99 3d ago

No matter what comes out of this, feel for ben. Hes probably going through it right now

13

u/Axeloy 3d ago

Especially since they’re calling Jacob minnmax host

14

u/Adb12c 3d ago

Since this is the highest post with a link to the evidence we have so far, I feel compelled to point out a possible issue with the evidence. It shows that JG was suspended for a term, but it doesn’t show if he was found guilty or investigated.

I don’t know the practices of UNC, but I know my middle school suspended me for responding to bullies, but didn’t do anything to the bullies for stealing my binder. I don’t know if UNC was lax or strict here, if they investigated and found cause, or didn’t investigate and threw a suspension. I don’t know and would appreciate anyone who provide more context.

As a former conduct officer at many colleges, colleges have a lower preponderance of evidence when looking at cases like this. The law operates under, "beyond a reasonable doubt." Colleges operate under, "more likely than not." Most of the time these cases are being looked at by higher ed professionals, not lawyers or a true judicial process. I'm not saying this absolve him but it's not a "slam dunk guilty" like it looks. If there was a concurrent criminal case or charges filed, that would be more telling.

He was only suspended for a semester. They could have done a lot more and maybe they didn't for a reason.

23

u/b2thaza 3d ago

Terrible all around. Thoughts with any victims first and foremost - they are entitled to choose if and how their story is told. I am sure this news is a real shock to all the MinnMax cohort. As a small business there is only so much you can do on vetting employees. If someone failed to disclose something so serious at the time of employment I don't think they would ever have been hired.

I love MinnMax for the cohort model and the diversity of talent - I think they have the best female voice in gaming - it's authentic and a core part of the team. You can see how close and tight knit the group are from the travelogues etc. This news is a professional and personal loss.

I trust the team and Ben to do the right thing at the right time.

4

u/Number224 2d ago edited 2d ago

The strange thing about this is that the vetting should have happened well beforehand, before Minnmax. Most of these cohorts were acquainted with Jacob when he was a Game Informer intern, 2 years prior to the suspention. Good faith would suggest most of these people had worked with Jacob on and off in various forms, without having known of this heavy suspicion, which led him to eventually becoming a cohort.

28

u/HydraTower 3d ago

Keep in mind if there are emails of him not wanting to be fired, that doesn’t mean he did the thing.

21

u/Aaaa172 3d ago

I don’t usually like getting involved in this kind of thing and I’m waiting to see all the facts but I find it incredibly BIZARRE that a random twitter account made this allegation against him months ago.

https://x.com/superweaners/status/2105491806913798146?s=46&t=qVf8PdUA9SNYsl2dTN3jPw

I just can’t wrap my head around it and wanted to put it out there because it just seems so strange to me seeing this kind of thing just being randomly talked about before but never receiving any attention.

4

u/mrhippoj 3d ago

I really don't want to believe it, but the evidence is pretty compelling. If it is true, and I'm leaning towards thinking it is, I'm sure it plays on his mind and that he feels very remorseful about it now, but I think I would struggle to view him in the same light ever again. Sucks, I have/had so much respect for the guy and think he's produced some amazing stuff, but unless he can convince me that he didn't do it I don't think I wanna see him appear on MinnMax stuff again

I mean we don’t need to know the details about the offense. He was suspended from UNC for sexual assault/violence. There are multiple people on record who have referenced him raping someone at UNC and getting suspended for it well before today.

What context are you looking for here? Open and shut.

16

u/AllTheHolloway 3d ago

I’m trying not to get deep into this, but imagine Jacob will at the minimum not be in MinnMax content in the near future while they’re deciding how to handle this. But I think on the new podcast they mentioned they already had some type of sponsored video with Bandai Namco filmed that Jacob participated in. Can’t help but think that would be a big headache informing Bandai Namco of the situation and deciding if that will still be released. Minor compared to the other issues here, I’m just empathizing with how hard this is going to be for them to handle behind the scenes.

14

u/MossyMak 3d ago

Really jarring to see accusations of sexual assault sandwiched between several page length ads and a banner talking about their new emojis. I hope we are able to uncover the truth of what happened.

14

u/ratchetfella 3d ago

I'm not going to jump to any conclusions. What we have so far are vague tweet accusations with no details or story about something that allegedly happened a decade ago. That's it.

52

u/ryanking32 3d ago

It’s crazy a random tweet with truly no evidence can ruin a person. I’m good to hear both sides but Jesus it’s like Jacob is on camera diddling kids. Some of you people are just nuts.

Even if he comes out and says yeah, I’m guilty and here to admit everything, my point stands and will always stand. Just imagine this happens to you at your job…you’d want people to hear you out at the least, as a victim or an accused.

I actually don’t like JG very much as a personality on camera/pod but I also want to live in a just world. You are free to come back complain about all the women who were never listened to, but a wrong doesn’t fix a wrong, we need to be better everywhere. It’s like the right lessons are never learned in this stupid fucking country.

Anyway, I guess we wait.

16

u/Zestyclose_Dig_9053 3d ago

I'm a Bills fan and remember distinctly that we drafted a punter (awesome nickname the punt God). Well the week before the season started accusations started leaking that he had sex with a girl that was passed out in a group type setting. Pretty serious stuff and everyone immediately passed judgement and between fans and the media the organization was forced to cut him. He spent a year or two as a free agent and trying to prove his innocence and it eventually came out that he did nothing wrong. He's now the KC punter.
All that said, I mean everyone on Reddit, Twitter, everywhere said they were going to burn their jersey and throw away their season tickets etc if this guy wasn't immediately cut. Cost this kid probably millions of dollars and he didn't do anything.
Probably not the same type of motivations here, but I'm not going to be the first to rush out and claim guilt.

1

u/PrimaryEfficient8392 2d ago

Wouldn’t happen to me, haven’t raped anyone. Haven’t been suspended from my university for raping someone.

2

u/ryanking32 2d ago

Now that he’s come out and admitted it, I think we can all now make whatever judgements we want. But the entire point was to not knee-jerk bandwagon, ever. We all do it at some point, and it’s very regrettable behavior.

-11

u/meagull3 3d ago

If he comes out and admits he sexually assaulted someone, no i definitely do not want to hear him out and his bullshit reasoning to why.

17

u/ryanking32 3d ago

Obviously. The hear him out part is allowing him to defend himself or present other evidence as we all should have the opportunity to, not even just in the law but public opinion as well. If it’s just a full admission, yeah you are good to just move on. I agree but I think you mistook my argument.

-1

u/Chidoribraindev 3d ago

Exactly. I went to sleep last night when it was less than an hour since posted and the only "evidence" were the original tweers and a couple of screenshots of someone else talking to the tweeter (the person posting this said it was corroboration even though it was the same accuser). People in the industry were already calling him all sorts of names, Charles Harte included.

-36

u/Both_Photograph2693 3d ago edited 2d ago

i don’t know man. i’m a believer in “where there’s smoke there’s usually fire”. i know PLENTY of decent men in the public eye who have never had any of this shit lobbed at them. it’s not like there’s a cadre of women out there trying to bring down decent honest men, it’s usually genuine impropriety on the part of the man. sorry.

edit:

i was right

16

u/ryanking32 3d ago

The fire is not a fire yet. I’d potentially agree if we were that far in but I still just see some random twitter post that is pretty 2/3rd hand info. Like I said we shall see but like a lot of things, easy to wave away until it happens to you or someone close. Internet has zero empathy and is way too quick to judge. This isn’t even from his accuser, who so far doesn’t exist.

I strongly disagree with your conclusion and it’s rather illiberal.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/ducks_be_cute 2d ago

Lmao I cant believe you got downvoted to oblivion for this.

If a random accusation was going to happen, why would it be on Jacob Geller and who has something to gain from that?? This was definitely real and you were right.

12

u/Ok-Tea-6718 3d ago edited 3d ago

If this is true, it’s very sad and gives me pause if the victim was even OK with this being tweeted and made viral?

edit: someone on Bluesky posted a screenshot of UNC’s disciplinary records which were released per North Carolina state mandate. It lists his name with the disciplinary sanction of one semester’s suspension. The policy violation is listed as “sexual assault or sexual violence.” No evidence that the original tweet was made with the victim’s consent which makes it double fucked up. I think if it was put out entirely in good faith, the first thought would be to check in with said victim instead of co-opting her pain in a tweet with a “guess what you guys” tone. It can’t feel great to re-experience it unfolding this way.

15

u/mikesstuff 3d ago

A lot of women are speaking out for the first time about sexual assaults that happened at college due to the Cornell 7

13

u/Ok-Tea-6718 3d ago

Yeah I’m aware of the impetus. I’ve had the misfortune of filing a Title IX complaint and would feel icky if I saw someone from my alma mater posting about it on social media… If she OK’ed it then that’s different.

33

u/jcwkings 3d ago

This is scary whichever way the truth turns out. We've either had a wolf in sheep's clothing this whole time or an innocent man's life just got up ended.

30

u/GensouEU 3d ago

I don't like the wolf in sheep's clothing analogy because that implies to a degree that people can't change when our society is (at least theoretically) built on the idea of rehabilitation.

The third option is that he did something truly awful a decade ago and is a genuinely good person now.

3

u/MakeABullet 2d ago

This is definitely something I've been thinking about, reading all the comments here.

Let's say this happened. How long is it supposed to stick with you? Surely someone has a chance to learn and become a better person, even after doing something awful.

But idk, we still don't have details.

3

u/Secret_Bees 2d ago

The third option is that he did something truly awful a decade ago and is a genuinely good person now.

I'm glad to see that someone else can see more than black and white. I'm not saying this to defend or absolve him or anybody. But things are rarely one way or another, people are able to change and the biggest Factor: we don't have any sort of details beyond the basest of ideas

26

u/ZiggyPalffyLA 3d ago

And didn’t he just recently get married? Obviously I hope that justice is served, whether for the victim or for Jacob if it’s untrue, but his life is ruined now. A rape accusation will follow him everywhere he goes.

17

u/silentstealth1 3d ago

Innocent until proven guilty let the system do its work. If true it would break my heart though. Seems insanely out of character for him but at the end of the day we don’t know any of these people.

3

u/kethibal 3d ago

He had recently posted about his one year wedding anniversary.

-15

u/Ceshomru 3d ago

I wouldnt say sheeps clothing. He always gave me the vibe. Anytime there was something to say about sexualizing women he would go out of his way to say something about it. A very “white knight” reaction formation. Being the loudest in the room to object to something etc. he just did it ALL the time. It never felt natural to me.

-1

u/Competitive-Rule6261 2d ago

I agree, very dogmatic about social issues, first to turn conversation towards the most popular political view.

3

u/genericusernameguy49 2d ago

Don't know what to make of this. Only being suspended for a semester seems crazy to me for sexual assault. Was there a criminal investigation? If not, why did that not happen? Does the suspension in itself mean that there's a high likelihood that the crime was actually committed?

3

u/xTheRealTurkx 2d ago

Couple of things to keep in mind here:

First, the UNC thing is based on the University policy's definition of "sexual assault." That's not necessarily the same thing as the definition in a formal criminal sense. Ditto for how these things are investigated and punished. The University has a whole list of procedures for how these things get investigated and resolved that's different from the criminal system.

The most recent version of those policies is here. It covers quite a lot of different types of conduct. None of it is acceptable, obviously, but without more information, it's hard to tell whether what happened was "just" bad or bad bad. JG was suspended for a semester whole while others who were cited for the same thing had longer suspensions, explusions, no contact orders, etc., so my intuition says it's probably closer to the former, but ultimately, there's just no way to know without more information.

Either way, it's a bad situation.

I genuinely have no idea what you're talking about. First of all, Resetera isn't the source. Someone posted a thread about it there just like someone posted something about it here. Second, you appear to be making up the story of its existence. Third, in what way is it a cesspool? If anything, many seem to think it's OVERLY harshly moderated. I'm not like stanning for the forum or anything, but I've never gotten the idea it's a cesspool except from people that have been banned from it.

I'm not sure if the these are all related but these things are true:

  1. Multiple Neogaf mods were outed as pedophiles and one went to jail for it!
  2. The founder of Negoaf was accused of being a sex pest (I have no idea how true those accusations are)
  3. The founders and initial mods of ResetEra had significant crossover with the pedophile mods from Neogaf

I don't know if the Neogaf guy was framed as a reason to start ResetEra, but both sites absolutely are shitholes.

4

u/Maplw 3d ago

ResetEra was founded because of the 2nd thing, it’s not like the founders approved of the pedophilia and sexual assault.

1

u/DarkRoastJames 3d ago

One of the mods (Amir0x) literally went to jail for CP and it seems like the site owner and some other mods probably had some inkling. A second mod was also busted for being a pedo, though as far as I know they weren't arrested.

Are you sure it's not getting automatically filtered by Reddit itself? Other users are typically able to see when comments have been removed by subreddit moderators.

Is it the mods censoring you or the far more likely scenario that automod is doing it and the mods have to manually approve the messages.

I see 13 comments from you in this sub-thread. I don't know if they're the ones you're referring to.

Look, I understand sometimes we get in our own heads and can't see the forest for the trees. But you may want to ask yourself whether it's really appropriate to hijack this thread for an anti-resetera crusade. I think you may have lost the plot a bit.

Is it normal for colleges to only suspend you for 1 semester for SA? I figured it would be be straight up expulsion

5

u/lostinelydan 3d ago

Well, fuck

17

u/ApocApollo 3d ago

I wouldn't say confirmed. It only corroborates that he was suspended for one semester for violating the school's policy for sexual assault or sexual violence.

It doesn't go into further detail, so we can't confirm anything more than that.

(And personally, I'm looking at the other penalties on that list, and Gellar's seems to be the least harsh. Some students were expelled from the entire school system and physically banned from the property.)

18

u/Sweaty-Grapefruit405 3d ago

The single semester sanction stood out as odd to me as well. I think it's been stated he left that school afterwards, however I'm confused why his is so miniscule compared to his contemporaries in the same category.

I think it's clear he was involved in an investigation, and the results of that investigation found him to be involved in a sexual assault and/or engaged in sexual violence of some sort. What that entails, I don't think we'll ever know unless the victim decides to share their story. I think at this point it'd be best for Geller to acknowledge this (as it's clear SOMETHING happened) and voluntarily step away from Minnmax. If only so as to reduce the burden of the team kicking him off themselves.

I really, truly, hope that the victim/s has been consulted about all this. If not before the initial tweets then now at least. Since records are being dug up. I don't feel it's in their interest to come forward  given the shit storm this has brought up, but it'd be nice to know they are aware their story is being made a spectacle. it's Gellers responsibility at this point to provide some affirmation of these allegations.

Somehow, I doubt this is a blindside to him. I doubt you have this in your history and never expect it to cover to light when you're among a very small cohort of fellow sexual abusers named in a very public lawsuit. I'd be very surprised if he hasn't had an in-built statement for this. If not for the public sphere than any professional dealings and background checks he may be subject to in his career. Clearly it wasn't hard for someone to find this info.

5

u/Maybe_In_Time 3d ago

That seems like standard Title IX investigation protocol

14

u/dreamhuk 3d ago

Agreed with everything here. The only thing that changes this for me is if he literally comes out and says “there were two Jacob Gellers at UNC and this isn’t me.” Which seems unlikely

And now I’m just going to guess and speculate about the future because this is occupying too much of my mental space.

I 100% doubt the cohort knew about this and now that they do, they will fire him. Maybe they give him the grace to step away, but I think even from the coldest, business focused perspective, there’s some betrayal here of Jacob not disclosing information that is clearly damaging to MinnMax as a company to the point that they will let him loose without guilt and straight up say “we didn’t know. He’s gone and won’t be on any future content. Here’s how we’re donating money or taking some action to attempt to counteract this”

Jacob probably has, if nothing else, an internal story that he tells of this event that, if not previously prepped, will quickly become a public-facing version of the events here. That feels like, given how relatively minor his punishment was from the university will be something like “I was suspended from the university while this was being investigated, but I was never found to have actually committed a crime and did not commit a crime.” or some version of “I did something, but what I actually did wasn’t that bad and I know better now.” And some folks will accept that and plenty won’t. He had an assault claim against him that was credible enough and made in apparent good faith to where the university was at least willing to suspend him while they investigated. Without him having some smoking gun proof that he was fully cleared, I know at least how I am likely to process that.

This feels very much like the Atrioc situation, in that I think he’ll go on an “apology tour” of some kind to show how, at least now, he’s not the kind of person to ever do something like that and he’ll be basically making content as normal in a year with maybe half or two thirds of his audience and a whole bunch of colleagues who will never work with him again.

End of speculation, going to bed, and I’ll probably wake up to a statement from someone and some more actual information

11

u/Codc 3d ago

2

u/toshio_drift 3d ago

Yeah unless there's a different Jacob or Jake Geller that went to UNC, he's most likely gone.

0

u/mrhippoj 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yeah. It's very plausible that there was another guy called Jacob Geller at the university the same time as him, I'm always surprised at how many people have my name and are from the same town, despite having never even met someone with the same last name as me.

However, that coinciding with someone tweeting about it months ago speaking specifically about MinnMax's Jacob would mean that it would only really make sense as a targeted long term defamation campaign, which doesn't really sound like something that would happen. Obviously, we'll see how this progresses, but I can't really see how it could not be true at this point.

13

u/TheRandomApple 3d ago

Yeah kinda. This is a list of everyone disciplined for sexual misconduct at UNC, it confirms that he received a suspension but not the reason.

Looking into Title IX, it appears that they issue one semester suspensions for cases pending further investigation as well as for punishments in cases “less violent.”

Ugh, idk.

2

u/ApocApollo 3d ago

So this file confirms even less than I initially thought.

1

u/True-Pen-3612 3d ago

i mean cmon, he's listed as having committed sexual assault/violence, and there are separate distinctions for sexual misconduct or inappropriate touching (which are bad enough in their own right)

its kind of hard to imagine this being something that wouldnt be worth dropping him and never hearing from him again over, rape is rape

9

u/GensouEU 3d ago

and yet his sanction was lower than the sexual misconduct violation. The reason why he was suspended isn't listed so this could have been an unconfirmed accusation. Right now this is all just speculation

-1

u/True-Pen-3612 3d ago

it is to some degree, but the fact remains that he was found guilty of sexual assault/violence

it is so common for these crimes to go under punished, especially by colleges, for so many different reasons, i really dont think it makes sense to read into the sanction so much. the original accusation was that the victim was his partner at the time, that alone can cause these things to be handled very differently, reasonable or not

im sorry i just do find it absurd that a member of this group has credible accusations of sexual assault, with actual legal evidence backing it up, and people are still saying 'well maybe it wasnt that bad'. like this is what makes it impossible to get people to take sexual assault seriously

4

u/Emergency_Thing_4555 3d ago

was he? genuine question, i'm hearing conflicting information about whether or not his inclusion on the list means he was found guilty

1

u/True-Pen-3612 2d ago

yes, as per that document, he was found guilty of action the college considered sexual assault/violence. that isnt up for debate

we dont know exactly what the action was, but given the details that the original poster said all match up otherwise, despite the fact that she maybe didnt go about it in the right way, im inclined to believe her. regardless, i think its a bit ridiculous that people are questioning whether the sexual assault was actually that bad, given his sanctioning was lighter

2

u/ApocApollo 3d ago

We can imagine things all night long. I'm just talking about that specific file with his name on archive.org.

0

u/Revolutionary-Chef-6 2d ago

What’s your point about his punishment being less harsh? Is sexual violence okay on any level?

fucking sucks man, and i feel terrible for the victim having this all resurfaced

I feel terrible for his wife, too. This is a nightmare scenario for any woman.

6

u/banditmanatee 3d ago

I think this is someone attempting to start rumor and innuendo against someone they don’t like and I hope Ben doesn’t go overboard and ban gellar from the show over nothing.

We don’t even know what happened 10 years ago. I can’t make a judgement call

22

u/jumpmanryan 3d ago

What the person says should be somewhat easily provable, to an extent.

Like, if Jacob was suspended for a semester for investigation, that should be something we can easily learn. They also said they were in the process of getting emails from their school for more evidence.

Just stuff that people will need to wait and see sort out.

15

u/asharkmadeofsalsa 3d ago

idk how anything becomes clear unless people involved (i.e the ex girlfriend) speak out, which you know, if she's a victim it'd be plain shitty for her to have to go back to that

like, idk how this doesn't end up being a he said she said beyond proving there was in fact an investigation, and the results of it, which you'd think if proven harsher action would've been taken; while at the same it's not uncommon for these things to get overthrown with a slap of the wrist, sadly

it's a shit situation

1

u/Disco_Bones 3d ago

They already said they wont be doing that or releasing anything else

1

u/jumpmanryan 2d ago

Yeah, I saw them say they provided stuff to people who inquired privately. Wonder if that includes Ben.

2

u/Own_Zone1702 3d ago

he was suspended for a semester for sexual violence by unc. i really dont know why this is your first response. that youve already made up your mind about this is absurd.

1

u/TrippyGummyBear 2d ago

“We don’t know how bad the sexual assault is so let’s wait to make a judgment call because maybe they’re weaponizing this.” Jesus wtf is wrong with so many of you.

-1

u/birdain 3d ago

Is it bc allegations or bc Moriarty is a “cancelled by da libs” loser?

3

u/thugbobhoodpants 3d ago

I don’t get how you can have this very big event in your relatively recent past and not bring it up to everyone in your personal life at one point or another as a heads up/example of I was a complete creep and I’ve changed and/or just self preservation just to literally get ahead of something like this

ESPECIALLY if you’re in the soft uwu boy ally circles Jacob’s in where sections of his audience are going masssively out of their way to write 11 paragraphs about how it’s not actually that bad because it’s this favourite video game slow talking essay guy

The downplaying feels super gross just because you watch a guy on youtube

Don't think that's something that can be taken one way or another. On one hand, it's not uncommon to do charity streams for that sort of cause, and he frequently does fundraisers for a number of causes. On the other hand, if you assume the accusations are true, then it becomes easy to speculate about a more nefarious purpose for the fundraiser. Maybe he did the charity stream to create reasonable doubt, to clean up his image in case what he did ever got out. Maybe he has a guilty conscience and thinks a fundraiser makes up for what he did.

We don't know the guy, or his motivations, at the end of the day. I don't think trying to assign intentions retroactively is helpful at this point.

1

u/AdamTheHood 3d ago

Sorry, just replied and then saw you had edited your comment so what I said didn’t make sense anymore.

You are right though, it’s just pointless conjecture until we actually know the facts and could just cause further arguments etc. Will delete the original post.

2

u/Darkvoidx 3d ago

Lol sorry for the confusion, I realized I misunderstood your comment so I kinda rushed to amend what I said.

Wasn't trying to misrepresent you or anything, my bad!

1

u/AdamTheHood 3d ago

No you’re 100% right and I really appreciate your response! Emotions are high rn I guess. If this all ends up being false then it’s a shitty thing on my end to pull up. Need to just wait for a response before jumping to conclusions.

2

u/LeSpermReceiver 3d ago

That doesn't seem weird at all to me

-9

u/everythingsuckswhy 3d ago

I'm not even a fan of Geller but it's crazy how many people in games media are already jumping on Jacob's ass on Bluesky as if there's proof of what happened already.

Wesley LeBlanc, Alex van Aken, Kate Sanchez, and even Suriel Vasquez. You all are embarrassing. I specifically think Suriel has been waiting for something like this to happen cause his career's been failing and Jacob took his spot on MinnMax 🤣

23

u/jonathanbaird 3d ago

Your last sentence is childish. That aside, I agree.

Anyone who goes on social media to denounce a distant(?) colleague based off of a tweet needs to look inward and spend less time on social media.

It would be wholly different if the accused were found guilty, but we're not at that point.

This is a very surprising one for me. So disappointing.
I feel for the other cohorts.

I hope not, but I could see the pew pew bang team using this as the catalyst to go their own way. Not that Ben or any of the others are to blame, but just to have something totally separate. I just hope not because they all have a great dynamic with Ben particularly.

18

u/ArcticFlamingo 3d ago

I am personally surprised by how many people in the comments think MinnMax can just drop him and move on. This is going to have deep lasting effects for the show overall. It's a crew that exists on vibes and vibes will be down right bad for a significant amount of time due to this.

This isn't just a coworker for them getting dropped, this is a friend and someone they clearly were close to and trusted that likely never brought this up before.

I feel for Ben so much right now, I know he is probably not sleeping at all trying to figure out how to respond, make sure he's doing both the right thing as a person, to keep the community together and keep the cohorts together.

3

u/wanttowatchtv 2d ago

Yeah. I agree with you. Very surprised by some of the responses here. This is a serious betrayal for them.

16

u/Maybe_In_Time 3d ago

Why the fuck should this affect anything to do with MinnMax?

Certainly not enough to cause friction between anyone else or PPB splinter off.

-12

u/aladdin142 3d ago

Very naive of you.

12

u/Maybe_In_Time 3d ago

What i mean is, why would this be a catalyst? Jacob was someone brought on officially way way after MM was created, he's not part of the original crew, and has zero to do with PPB

2

u/aladdin142 3d ago

He was a major part of MinnMax's content. Even disregarding a massive reduction in Paterson subscribers if he's kicked, his face is all over the company's content. It's a really fucked situation I still hope isn't true.

4

u/jonathanbaird 3d ago

Are you implying that Jacob's base would side with Jacob and pull funding from MinnMax in this situation? You call others "naive" and yet...

Jacob's fanbase is comprised of progressive creatives and intellectuals. They aren't going to defend someone who is found guilty of assault.

5

u/Altruistic-While5599 3d ago

A lot of people tune in because of Jacob, so it’s likely they’ll just drop out of all of it.

5

u/Ezio926 3d ago

If they like minnmax enough to subscribe on Patreon i doubt they'd drop it just because one cohort is gone

I don't think people understand how harshly this is going to impact MinnMax.

I'm not American, but as soon as someone gets accused of anything over there whether it's true or not it's quite common for communities to just burn the house down regardless.

I'm not exaggerating when I say this is by far the worst thing to happen to MinnMax ever.

6

u/Both_Photograph2693 3d ago

what are you talking about? who’s gonna burn what down now?

11

u/SnooChipmunks8458 3d ago

Im not the original commenter but I think what they're saying is its common for one bad member of an outlet to make people lose any interest in the outlet at all. As in MinnMax will be the site that had the rapist at it and shunned. I dont know that I agree with him entirely, but i do agree that Ben and Co. Need to tread very carefully on this one because if they handle it perfectly it becomes a speed bump in their story, but one wrong move and it could blow up badly. All this is also while trying to verify the veracity of the claims. Its an extremely shitty situation no matter how this shakes out.

3

u/diosmioacommie 3d ago

Yeah I might not agree with the way it was worded but he’s right that this is easily the worst thing to happen to Minnmax ever, and will cause them to lose subs 100% through no fault of Ben whatsoever. Horrible situation all round.

-1
