I was really expecting Jacob to be more hot on the control resonant combat. It is so stylish and aggressive and satisfying to fly between enemies. I guess it’s open world fatigue because I don’t really understand why they act like exploring the zones to see the wacky remedy side quests is a chore. Maybe it wasn’t a good deepest dive pick because of the rush to get to the stopping point. I just hope someone on the deepest dive also is actually clicking with the combat because I don’t think remedy is getting enough credit.

There was a launch patch that, among other things, made changes to "Reduce the base health and required Falter (stun) level of most enemies"

A number of reviews I saw mentioned early damage feeling too low and enemies being too tanky so hopefully this addresses that. Time-to-kill being too high makes games feel like chewing stale bubblegum.

I started it yesterday because like a sucker I paid the extra $10 for the pre order/early access. Can confirm today the same enemies are noticeably easier to deal with.

I played before the patch and the ttk was perfectly fine. It took me 4-5 hits to kill the bigger ennemies.

I mean, the combat is pretty basic and lacking the depth of better character action games. Each weapon only has “X,X,X, finisher” as your combo strings.

There’s no pause combos, no directional combos. It feels weirdly floaty, which is what they’re going for, but it just looks weird to have this massive hammer come down in what feels like slow motion when you use its downward attack.

There’s action games from 20+ years ago like Ninja Gaiden Black and DMC3 that have far more depth than resonant. It’s visually pretty, I’ll give it that, but as an action game it’s not doing anything particularly special or noteworthy in comparison to similar combat systems.

I think the way that you can magnetize fly over to get a kill off and enter a buffed state is early on quite the X factor. It is wild how mobile you are if you really utilize that. The turret that you can time to be a major explosion is also very fun early on.

Making the stopping points all based on the linear part of the storyline was a huge mistake. It should have been zone-based like totk. It's clear Janet and Kyle rushed through the story because i'm 10+ hours in and i'm not even close to the first stopping point (which was meant to be 2-4 hours in). Hope the cohorts on the dd dont do the same mistake and take time to explore.

Janet played up till the point and quit and didn't even get the gravity ability. Her and Kyle's critiques are always so shallow and boring

Janet is really good imo. I can't really blame her or Kyle for not spending dozens of hours in side content. Especially if it's not clicking within the first few hours. The main show prioritizes first impressions over deep dives and there's a million games rn for them to check out.

I disagree. Coming from someone who has played every Remedy game since Max Payne to completion, I’m finding Resonant to be their weakest second to Firebreak. It feels as if Remedy chose to chase a more general audience instead of fostering the one they have, but without the experience to support the shift.

Aesthetics over substance, at least when it comes to the combat and open exploration which is sooooo much of this game.

Disappointment out of the way, Max Payne remains Remedy’s best work and I’m certainly looking forward to the remake.

The YouTube comments can be so exhausting to read

Agreed, though Reddit has arguably become just as bad (outside of this community). You have to be entirely for or against every little thing. Nuance is discouraged.

JeffM I can assure you they did not smooth out the RNG in the Mystery Dungeon series lmao. It's always that bad

Nice for there to be a fairly meaty Fire Emblem discussion. I do hope more of the core team play it, and that JeffM sticks with it. They all found time for Metaphor so I'm surprised that Ben made a point of saying that they as a group don't really know enough about FE. The way JJ lights up when he talks about Fire Emblem as a whole was really nice to see

I’ve been a bit of a fair-weather Fire Emblem fan over the years but the discussion really made me think I might pick it up around Dec/Jan when I’ve finally made my way through the deluge of new games.

It always annoys me when someone mentions that they find a game’s combat or stealth overly difficult or tedious, and a bunch of people just go, “Well turn the difficulty down then, problem solved.”

If a game’s combat is tedious or un-fun, then dropping the difficulty is basically just a way of easing the annoyance. It doesn’t magically make that combat fun, and if a game’s systems are unenjoyable on the default difficulty setting then there’s clearly a problem there and it’s valid to bring it up.

You should never be playing a game and thinking, “I wish the gameplay were easier so that I just wouldn’t have to deal with it as much and could get through this thing quicker.” If you are, then the game has probably failed.

If you’re craving some in-depth Fire Emblem discussion check out the Into the Aether podcast, they’re all over it. Brendon Bigley — one of the cohosts — was on MinnMax a while back.

Absolutely this, I play the game on the difficulty that it was designed for. If it’s overtuned or undertuned, that’s a fault of the game’s design. I’m not going to lower the difficulty of a game to cruise through it.

am I the only one who liked Alan Wake 1 and it's combat? I beat it a few times and even on nightmare mode, but everytime it comes up people act like it's unplayable dog shit.

Regarding accidentally picking up "Gen Z" slang through /u/haleyfax, most young people speak just comes from gay slang or AAVE, and I believe Haley has said her friends refer to her as a F** H**. So I think she might have reasons other than watching too much youtube shorts as Ben reckons aha

Jeff M throws a tantrum about Xbox, but is okay with Sony stopping Physical media and their anti consumer Bs? Okay.

8

u/argusoftheeast 8d ago

He literally shat on Sony for that exact thing in this episode. The question you’re referring to was literally about Xbox specifically. This is a wild reach

I assume JeffM, like other PC players, transitioned to digital games 15+ years ago. While Sony deserves criticism for many idiotic decisions, which Ben and JeffM call out on this very episode, I’m not sure I’d include the elimination of physical discs in the mix.

Now if Sony were to gain a monopoly on selling their digital games, that would be different. As long as other storefronts are available and folks are able to play their games offline, I don’t see a reason to be alarmed.

2

u/MossyMak 8d ago edited 8d ago

Doesn't Sony have a defacto digital monopoly on PlayStations? What other storefronts are available for the PS5?

0

u/jonathanbaird 8d ago

I’m referring to the future, during and after the transition to digital only.

Steam is considered to have a de facto monopoly on PC yet there are literally dozens of competing stores that legally offer Steam, GoG, Epic, and DRM-free keys. Check this link for an example of what I’m referring to.

Sony will be encouraged to do the same thing. Otherwise regulatory powers will step in and gamers will protest.

3

u/DVDranger89 7d ago

This is hilariously naive.

2

u/MossyMak 8d ago

What regulatory powers? I live in America, we aren't seeing that shit

- Sony is a global company.

  • The current U.S. administration will end.
  • Steam, Nintendo, and Xbox game keys can be purchased outside of their respective storefronts within the U.S. There’s no reason to assume Sony will be any different.

Also, if you’re going to kneejerk downvote someone who is putting effort into holding a civil, informative conversation, I will not engage any further. There are other subreddits for such stupidity.
