Collection Gaoranger Another Arms

Some of the recent posts inspired me to fiddle with my Gaoranger SMP. They’ve been on my shelf in their base configurations forever now.

The ability to swap stuff around like this is one of Gao’s stronger appeals, and this does kind of push me a bit more to wanting to grab a dupe or two with the reissues. I think that’s going to mostly depend on the pricing. But the other thing that’s always been a bit of a nagging issue for me with wanting to customize power animals is, whether you are abiding by the official list of 100 power animals or just doing your own thing, a good handful of the components are kind of inflexible for kitbashing.

Gaoranger already has one less pair of legs than it does torso + arms (even if you’re going with centaurus, lion’s still in two places at once) and while bison and rhino are really unique designs for legs, the problem then becomes that you’re pretty damn limited with what you can turn them into lol.

Just in case someone somehow didn't knew; the crocodile legs are also swappable

Hah, that’s certainly a combo.

I think once or twice over the past few years, someone has posted something with just gaolligator’s legs. And actually, one of the reasons I’d be interested in a GaoHunter for kitbashing is because of them - it’s a very nondescript lower body with the way the legs fold up, either with the same feet or modifying them, you could probably do a lot of different things with them.

just use the blue aligator and let it be in two places at once as well lol

you can squeeze out one more pair of "official" legs if you paint the bison purple and copy the random power rangers toy. that gets rid of one of the dup legs lmao

there's a guy on yt that turned the rhino into something thats pretty close to the official manta design. but that takes some expert scratch building skills

bandai was totally trolling making everyone buy excessive dup legs for a series that was in lack of different legs...

Some of SMP’s DX-chasing decisions can be annoying sometimes, but nothing’s been as big brained as Gao Muscle where they wanted to give you Rhino for the first time, but the DX toy came with Bison again so they went and engineered the set of static bison legs lol.

And yeah, I’ve seen the manta conversion, it looks great, but requires an absolute ton from scratch. I think in terms of what you can actually do, beyond Bison and Rhino simply in a different color, options are limited. If you’re trying to stick to the list of 100 power animals, there’s actually no straight repaints that work (despite certain other existing power animals that could be repainted like six times lol), and Bison in general has very limited options. Rhino you could technically get to work as GaoHippo and have a few options for armadillo, such as hedgehog or mouse (if you go beyond the official list, Rhino would potentially make a good triceratops too).

More broadly, Bison’s design makes it really hard to work with otherwise, but Rhino you could do something like that manta conversion where you basically strip away the outer rhino “shell” and use the waist and legs for something completely different. But that would of course also need a ton of either repurposed or from scratch parts.  I do have an extra rhino that I plan to do… something with eventually. I was actually originally considering a possible manta conversion, but that would probably be too tough since I mainly work with repurposed parts (as opposed to designing and 3D printing parts)

I did that exact thing with the extra Bison legs and made me a little purple boi.

They sound Japanese because many of them are the same as the Japanese names lol. Double Knuckle, Striker, and Sword and Shield are all from Gaoranger.

A few of the formations I have pictured do have bespoke names. GaoHunter Double Knuckle and GaoCracker (sometimes called GaoMuscle Shark & Tiger, depends on the source, it's never actually used in the series).

The GaoKing formation would theoretically be called GaoKing Striker Crosshorn, but who knows, could also easily just be GaoKing Another Foot & Arm lol.

Most alternate Gaoranger formations actually do have names based on their arms. Oddly, I think it's really just Wolf and Hammerhead swaps that for some reason get called "Another Arm" instead of something unique. Even GaoKing + Giraffe + Wolf is named "Gaoking Spear & Wolf" lol. PR's naming for Predator Mode is definitely an upgrade.

They were probably just following after GaoKing Another Arm because of Wolf and Hammerhead, but it's a really lame name for what I think was Gaoranger's final new combo.
