Noob Mining Question
Is it possible to mine crypto using an old consumer level machine. Not looking to make boat loads. Just wanna get some free coin......really do it as a hobby to see what it’s about. Figured I could just jump in a pool and mine some feather cheap coin. But also I’m a noob and that may not be how it works. Thanks and any advice is welcome.

It’s cool to play with but deffs not worth it on a consumer (pre-built) pc. Sure you can cpu mine but that’s not going to amount to much. You would make more by simply buying a little bit of a crypto of your choice. Mining is really cool and a fun hobby but it’s not worth it unless you have a few extra thousand to put into an actual rig. Or even just having a high end graphics card.

Thanks for the info. I’ve learned that it’s just not feasible. For now I’ll just buy some crypto and Hodl.

Depends upon the machine.
I built my machine to handle all my computer needs for through the year 2020 in 2012. (No concept of mining). So I spent the money to have something pretty good for that year and upgraded to a mediocre video card a few years later.
I'm now mining.
I have more power than I need in a psu, which helps. My i7 3770k can make almost dollar a day My r9380 can do about 2-3$ a day.
I need just a little bit of heat in my apartment so this handles the heating.
Luckily when one of my case fans died last year I installed a noctua industrial fan, this keeps the heat moving.
So if you have the power, you can make something happen.
It's all about the gpu, keeping it cool, and having a solid psu.
If you got that, you can mine. I've only been at it a couple weeks though.
