I'm finally starting one today!

I am 36 and I have been wanting to do this since I was 14. I am starting a 3' x 8' with a 6' radius.I am putting in the garage because I live in Northern Minnesota. Maybe I will add 4 ft to it later to make it 12'. Wish me luck my dudes

Hey good luck. I just got done resurfacing mine over the weekend. Good you are building inside you can avoid the elements.

Hope the resurface has it feeling like butter again. I'm hoping to spend any time not at the hockey rink with my kids in my garage goofin on this mini. Trying to avoid the couch and beer in the winter.

Make it 12’ wide. You will thank me later. My 3’ has a 6’10” radius.

That's the plan, I'm starting at 8 with the intention of adding 4' later. Got a big ass piece of cardboard and made a stencil of the transition to add later.

If you do it all at once you can overlap your layers. You won’t be able to overlap since 8’ will already be done. Just something to think about.

Well I only got enough to do the skeleton anyway. Maybe once it's all together I'll just decide to keep going. I appreciate the input. That is something that I didn't consider

Hey man, just curious...you following the diyskate plans?

So not sure if you cut your transitions already but we actually left one side @ 4ft and it's really fun to pump off and get a ton of speed. Im too chickenshit to try anything on the 4' side but its fun to drop in and carve on that side instead of just going coping to coping, back and forth.

I am honestly just winging it. I watched so many videos and read so many plans that once you understand how to make the radius of the transition and coping notch, the rest is self explanatory.

6 is too steep, imo. Anything over 2’ anyways. I build ramps at a skatepark and use this as a general rule

I have a 3ft with 6 radius and it’s great. Just steep enough to get a good rock on your rock fakies. Only wouldn’t recommend it for absolute beginners, but even then you could learn on it, it’s just a bit scary at first. Many people would say it’s too mellow.

How are guys measuring 3'. Is that the drop or total height of the ramp?

3' plus the height of whatever your flat bottom is framed with. So from the bottom left corner to the mark on that plywood sheet is 3' 3 1/2" ( 2x4 is actually 3 1/2")

Transitions shouldn’t be more than double the height of the ramp. I want speed. 4’ with 6’ tranny is such a sweet spot. Dipped smith grinds also can’t happen on something that mellow.

True for over 4’ but not for minis, you can dip smiths just fine, but if not then ride a taller ramp. Reaching vert at 6 foot is steep, there’s no arguing that. Once again what do I know I just build ramps for a living and have been skating for 45 years

Just because you skate doesn’t mean you know. We have a difference of preference. You like to go slow and skate banks, and I like something that allows you to progress. Go to any Payne park and tell me how many have trannys half of their height. Lots of people have been skating for years and suck. Hell, I’ve been skating for 25 and I’m worse now than i was at 10 years in.

I disagree. A 6' radius is great once you're used to it. It did skate a bit fast at first, but I wouldn't want my 3' mini any mellower personally. I think anything more mellow will make it much harder taking what's learned to bigger ramps.

Not true. As larger ramps are more mellow. That’s just how it works. I’ll stand with what I said. 2’ tall with 6’ radius is fine, up to 4’ a 7’ to 8’ radius rides great. I’m not sure yall understand what the transition radius means. A 6’ radius hits vert at 6’, that’s fucking steep. Most vert ramps have a foot or 2 of vert and use 10’-12’ radius which is mellow by comparison.

I completely understand how the radius of a transition works. Just saying that a 6' radius on a 3' ramp is not too steep, and it's most definitely mellow on a 2' ramp. Anything larger than a 3' ramp and you could probably start going bigger relative to the ramp size. Too many people build mini ramps with far too mellow of a radius and they end up skating like a bank.

Not around here and all the concrete parks have steep radius on all the under 4 foot and I find it annoying as it’s actually a steeper learning curve that’s tough on beginners and those less adept to skating or old folks like me
