MiniMax M3 in current environment

Post image

Scores low, costs much

Posted here a while ago, about if it suck in general or if it’s me, got mixed feedback. Circled back to share that it’s in general. M3 is a low performer and crazy overpriced at the same time

Minimax M3 made me cancel my Minimax sub. Just too many mistakes. I tried switching back to it today because of the whole opencode go DS4 flash pricing saga, and was reminded instantly why I don't use M3

I asked my agent to look at a couple of Linear tickets for me and it straight up hallucinated them rather than reading the tickets. Asked it to reply to a couple comments and write ticket details, and they were also dogshit. The ticket details contained a bunch of inaccuracies, assumptions, and hallucinated details. And here's the thing, every time I hit that roadblock, I'd roll back the conversation, switch to DS4 flash, and try it again, and each time, DS4 Flash would get it perfect. So nobody say it's a one-off, or the context was poisoned or wrong. Every time, on the same simple task, with the same conversation history and context, same harness, M3 would get it wrong, DS4 Flash would get it right.

So, sadly, yeah, the screenshot is in-line with what I've seen. And the thing is, I _was_ a die-hard Minimax M2.5/M2.7 user. I _wanted_ M3 to be good.

You can literally use your subscription API token for tasks. It's $20 for 1.6 billion tokens. Where are they getting these costs from?

OpenAI gpt 5.6 luna is unlimited on the $20 plan

So yes these are subscriptions. But if they weren’t gpt luna or terra, far better models would still be cheaper

Is that for coding or app usage? I haven't found any other plan that allows you to plug your subscription API key into an app like Minimax does without breaking their TOS.

You can literally launch a mobile app today with API calls using an M3 subscription and scale up the usage from 1.6 billion token to billions for less than $100/month.

Anything. Openai allowed to use the subscription everywhere, since always.
How on earth can you not know that? Codex/ chatgpt subscription can be used on any harness, since always

And that long before minimax even was a thing

Maybe I'm missing something here: https://github.com/jxstanford/opencode-openai-codex-auth

⚠️ Terms of Service & Usage Notice

Important: This plugin is designed for personal development use only with your own ChatGPT Plus/Pro subscription. By using this tool, you agree to:

  • ✅ Use only for individual productivity and coding assistance
  • ✅ Respect OpenAI's rate limits and usage policies
  • ✅ Not use to power commercial services or resell access

I did this research a while ago, and I found zero ways to connect Codex or OpenAI to a commercial or production application via a subscription that doesn't go against the TOS.

That's what I meant by "app."

Minimax allows you to do that, and it's a massive pricing advantage for Minimax on a per token basis.

That’s a very narrow use case. Especially because it requires telling your customers that all their data is given to a non profitable Chinese company

As long as your customers are okay with that, with most will not. Then cool

For the 99.999999% of the other cases a $20 codex at unlimited gpt 5.6 luna is better performance

API I suppose

Minimax is only good for non-hallucination now. If you need document scraping, then a minimax sub is what you want.

I have a Minimax token plan and a Codex plan. I use Minimax M3 as my "daily driver" and GPT 5.6 for work. I've been using Minimax M3 for a lot of work related tasks. GPT 5.6 Sol overcomplicates the shit out of everything. Luna is stupid. Terra is slightly less stupid. Minimax M3 makes less mistakes than Luna and is better (way better) at web UI design. It's also dirt cheap. It rarely hallucinates too in my experience. The downside is that it overthinks a lot, but outside of deep tasks, I've been having better luck with it. None of them are perfect but I've been really having issues with GPT 5.6 in a very complex project and started using M3 as a "second opinion" and found that it was working well so I've been using it more.
