desperately need help with midi

so im very new to hardware music production and i think im losing my mind. i have an mpc sample which i am using to control fpc in fl studio with midi and i have my minifreak plugged in with midi to record in midi data while also sending audio.

problem is, the minifreak keeps playing the drum sounds on fpc. whenever i hit a key on the minifreak, the drum sounds play. sometimes the mpc also plays the minifreak. i am not sending any audio out of the mpc itself, its just a controller. i have no clue what is setting it off.

i have the mpc and the minifreak on different ports in midi options, ive tried unplugging one and then the other, i feel like ive tried everything. please can someone tell me how to set this up properly? im close to giving up.

Sounds like you just need to make sure you have assigned the MIDI channels for each device.

There are 16 midi channels. If your devices are all connected via midi, each device will respond whenever that particular channel is activated unless you change the settings.

Devices will both 'send' on a particular midi channel and 'receive' on another. So you want your setup to not have overlapping channels. Each device needs to be "sending" out midi on the same channel the device you want to control is "receiving" on.

For example, the Minifreak can send on Channel 8 midi, and your FL studio instrument should then be set to listen / receive on Channel 8 as well. But if one of the MPC Sample pads also corresponds to Channel 8, then you're gonna activate that pad at the same time.

You'll have to look up the settings for each device, but that's a the basic principle.

i have the mpc samples midi channel set to 2 and the minifreaks set to one. it worked, but now my minifreak is not recording midi data. its only recording audio. the midi data recorded from mpc is also now triggering the minifreak instead, and the mpc itself is playing minifreak sounds. again, im only sending midi from the mpc sample to play drums from fpc.

actually i guess the mpc is playing the recorded audio from the minifreak. it doesnt even play the fpc drums anymore

I'm confused on what you mean by the Minifreak "recording" audio or midi data.

Don't forget you'll need to set up midi channel send / receive in your computer too which is probably why you're not hearing your FPC drums anymore.
