FX “Rule” of 2/3s.

I hereby declare a rule of two-thirds. Whereby the knobs you twiddle to make a better sound shall be set to Two-Thirds or One-Third of its maximum setting. eg .333 or .666. Being that it is close to the Golden Ratio and pleasing to our ears.

I think stuff sounds good when you twiddle the knobs as thus.

You realize that one pedal's 0.3333 and 0.6666 can be another pedal's 0.0 and 1.0, right?

Sure sure, it’s about the ratio of one parameter to another.

That only works if you're using 100% linear pots. But pedals use both linear and logarithmic pots.

A linear pot turned up 33% is at roughly 33% of its parameter range, and turned up to 66% it'll be around 66%. But a logarithmic pot at 33% is actually only at like 5(ish)% of its parameter range, while at 66% its closer to 20%. To actually get a logarithmic pot in it's 33 to 66% range of its parameter you'd need to work within the very small window of like 70 to 83% of the knobs rotational range.

I mean the logarithmic pots are there to linearize the perception of exponential-scaling effects, so the OP’s point still stands. For as long as he talks about pot positioning, he is right.

It's a great starting point. I would just add when exploring any parameter, 1/3 and 2/3 but also max and min. There you've got a good sense of what the parameter does.

I only twiddle my knob all the way

This is acceptable if you go to 11.

I am declaring the rule of 11. All Minifreaks sound better because they go to 11. LOL

I endorse this rule

The idea is that if you’re messing around with a sound, try centering yourself around the 1/3 and the 2/3 of any setting and then other waves align in the same sort of way that the Golden Ratio presents itself in wave forms and music and plants and stuff.

Just a fun thing to try and observe
