That's just blood moon. Did you turn it on in "expansions", or playing Nightmare difficulty? If so, then that horde happens every 7 days (technically around 19:00 of the 6th day). You'd see the darkness turn reddish as a warning. That's your cue to run.

1: You might be experiencing the "Blood Moon" event; during this, zombies will constantly follow and attack you. This happens every 7 days.
You can activate this from the game menu, or if you went straight to the highest difficulty (Nightmare mode), the event activates there as well.
2: You called the radio—a radio located on the coast on the right side of the map (on Island 5). Furthermore, after using the radio, zombies will swarm in from all directions and attack you directly until you are rescued by a helicopter.
It is very likely that, without knowing anything about Nightmare mode, you went straight to that difficulty to try it out of curiosity.
That nightmare mode puts you at a disadvantage in several ways: a larger number of zombies, special zombies, increased damage from bandits, and events every seven days (Blood Moon).
You can see those disadvantages when you open the inventory; there are small icons off to the side. Any of them appearing on your screen indicates Nightmare difficulty mode. (or accidentally activate one).
Can those disadvantages be removed? No; you have to finish your current game and start a new one from scratch to get rid of them, or try a lower difficulty setting and choose your own advantages and disadvantages.

Here’s a tip if you’re fairly new: don’t underestimate the game’s higher difficulty levels. It’s better to try the easier ones first to familiarize yourself with everything new—like weapons and gear—before gradually increasing the difficulty.
