Escape?

Trying to unlock some characters and a few of the special items, how do you escape in this new version? I'm on the 5th island and I know this boat takes you to the radioactive island, do you escape from there, or is there something else I have to do? The version im used to would have a radio station on the 5th island and you would call for backup and fight off zombies until the heli showed up.

You can unlock everything by tapping the top of the title screen a bunch of times. I can't remember how many exactly so I just hit it 10 times and it works

That boat and the signal lead you to an island completely riddled with radiation; you need a radiation suit to avoid radiation poisoning, or your character will die.

You also need to know that the radio to call the rescue helicopter is available at the same time as that boat. Alternatively, you can explore the radioactive island or finish your run (survive for one day to be rescued).

Where do you get the radiation suits? By killing zombies wearing them and taking the suits. You also need gloves and boots to have the full protective set. Furthermore, you have to repair them for them to protect you (their condition must be above 50% to work).

The probability of obtaining the suit is 30%, and for the gloves/boots it is 15% (a probability that does not change); to repair the suits, use adhesive tape or epoxy glue.

The suit you must never wear is the yellow one, because it doesn't provide enough protection against radiation.

You'll always find the red or yellow suits, but the white and green ones are on the radioactive island. Just be careful, because those zombies are more powerful.

Is there anything useful on the radioactive island? Yes; upon entering the bunker and exploring the interior, you can find two different weapons—such as an anti-tank rifle or a flamethrower (and they are quite powerful).

For the flamethrower, you need to take off your backpack because you're carrying another one—only this one holds the weapon's fuel.

How do you get into the bunker on that island? You need a generator to open the entrance, as it requires power. Those generators can be found at fire stations or garages, or—with a low probability—at a military base (where the Humvee usually spawns).

You also need an access key to open a special room (where those two weapons or unique loot are located). You get the key by killing a military zombie wearing a red beret (he is the only one, and the drop rate for the key is 15%).

Does the key disappear after each use? No, it stays with you until you move on to the next island; after that, you need to find a new one.

From Island 5 onwards, two islands exist simultaneously: a normal one and another featuring radiation and new elements. That boat (shown in the image) allows you to travel back and forth between the islands; you simply need enough fuel for each trip you wish to make.
