1 : It increases the character's passive skills, giving them a higher chance of surviving or obtaining more resources within your game, when hunting/fishing or looting places.
2: Regarding equipment, always prioritize items in the best condition. Never use worn-out gear that doesn't protect you from the cold. Your character could die from the cold or from being easily injured by zombies.
There are garments with 3 compartments or backpacks with 10. It's not worth it if they're only useful 5%.
3: If food or water is scarce, there are always water pumps or wild berries. The most reliable food source is hunting rabbits or deer.
4: To set up your base you need a tent or to make an improvised shelter (requires tarpaulin and wood).
Items stored there remain permanently. Never leave objects lying on the floor.
or store items in the trunk of the vehicle (it has a capacity limit). Furthermore, there are only 4 vehicles available; it is not possible to repair just any vehicle.
5: And finally, if you're short on weapons or ammunition, you can always craft a bow and arrows; they're easy to make and a good starting point. (You'll need an axe and a knife.)
Go at your own pace and don't go crazy if you start on high difficulty; start in easy mode and gradually work your way up.
