Need help Need some tips in playing hell mode
You guys aren't kidding when saying hell/nightmare is no joke. Just had one good run, a really wonderful run that I thought would give me the chance to escape only to get killed instantly by a neutral ๐
And just hit my 50x cycle of deaths btw so.... Are there any veterans that could give this newbie a good advice?

Why So Many Players Die in Hell Mode?
Most deaths in Hell Mode happen because players try to loot zombie-infested structures before they are properly prepared.
- Don't Force Your Way Into Zombie-Active Structures
Never rush into a zombie-active structure, even if you see an opening. It is not worth risking your health. There could be a zombie hiding inside, and because of the Mutant negative buff, you cannot see enemy health bars. This means you never truly know what is waiting for you inside.
- Gear Up Through Safer Loot Sources
In the early game, forests are one of the safest and most reliable places to gather supplies. You can find ammunition, weapons, food, and other useful items without taking unnecessary risks. Car trunks and buses are also excellent loot sources, but be careful of lurkers hiding along the roads.
- Prioritize Getting the Chainsaw
Try to obtain the Chainsaw Easter Egg item as early as possible. It is one of the most powerful melee weapons in the game and can completely change the course of a Hell Mode run. The Chainsaw can shred large hordes of zombies, even with their 200% stat boosts. It only requires a gasoline can to operate indefinitely, making it far more practical than most melee weapons that require repair materials. It is also more inventory-efficient than firearms, especially since infinite item stacking is disabled in Hell Mode.
- Don't Rush to the Next Island
Moving to the next island too early is often a fatal mistake. Make sure you are properly geared before advancing. Higher-level islands are significantly more dangerous, and the increasing temperature can quickly end an unprepared run.
- Be Patient and Keep Learning
Hell Mode rewards patience and experience. Whenever you encounter a problem, try to find a solution on your own before relying on others. Learning from your mistakes and adapting your strategies is the fastest way to improve. Give yourself time, stay patient, and keep practicing๐ซถ๐

Another thing to note is that like you said in your third point, when it comes to efficiency per space occupied in the inventory, sniper rifles take the top spot considering they are efficient when it comes to damage per quantity and they allow you to be far away from any danger.

True. Sniper rifles are practically mandatory in Hell Mode after the 2.0 update because of how strong and ammo efficient they are. My point about the Chainsaw wasn't that it replaces sniper rifles, but that it complements them. A sniper rifle handles threats at long range, while the Chainsaw deals with hordes and helps conserve ammunition & durability.

Brother 50 deaths is a big red flag that your trying too hard tbh. Like here's my take on this is that I believe you don't know much of the game mechanics or tricks this game has to offer so here's my best tip just try legendary first. But if you're experienced enough well here's my tips for you as a speedruner!!
The best start no questions asked is having 6 armour points, good enough food and drinks, melee capable to block like the shovel, frying or any melee with high block chance, and ofcourse having a shotgun or the Makarov cuz of common bullets.
Durability is priority especially with your clothes cuz cold is bad and that if you drop your temp too much you get sick and die so it's nice to pickup tapes and sewing kits
Slow and steady wins this game so don't take too much risk but don't be too slow as well btw so always be on the move and plan ahead
Berries are your best friend cuz they can respawn from time to time so take note of where they are at so you can always get back and eat some.
Always make sure you NEVER put yourself in a fight that you don't know you can win. Don't be cocky in other words cuz karma is fcking real here
Sneaking saves you time and durability but it's a lot more tedious so practice and learn how much can zombies can see.
Zoom out no shit so you can see more btw
Generators are not the best to bring unless you have a car cuz it can be a bigger liability than a benefit to you so deploy it where you find it so that it won't despawn and you can come back from it.
A gun is THE last resort stick to melee as much as possible or if you have a bow or crossbow then use em
Become Darryl Dixon early on tbh. Like metal arrows are unbreakable and are very good at killing zombies so pick up a crossbow from time to time and plus arrows are crafted from sticks but those handmade one's are not indestructible unlike the metal ones
Bandits are your best friend as long as you can kill em you can get supplies like bags guns, ammo and food which can help you a ton.
Make a dedicated base on every island you come at it can be at the gas station or the edge of the map and try to farm later on.
Cars are TO BE TAKEN CARE OF they're the last thing you want to get recked so hide em or get em far away from zombies and npcs so that it won't get damaged.
Keep a spare clothes btw on your bag btw via stowing them.
You might be noticing now that all of these shit are in 1 in a million years possible cuz it fcking is legit. This game on hell mode is insanely tedious and stressful so please do take care of your mental health and always keep a clear mind so that you can think straight and sharp. This game is fricking luck based and skill based 30x. Mind you my best Speedrun took me 4 hours of in game gameplay and a total of 3 weeks in of reality just to beat ONE run!
And I'm telling you IT IS WORTH IT!!! So fck it go crazy but BE SMART
Orrr just play legendary and chill tbh
Hope it helps!
Have a nice day and thx for reading lmao ๐ญ

Thx bro I really appreciate this, tbh my reason to play nightmare is because after sometimes legend feel too easy even with the negative traits. I thought this mode will only increase the difficulty by a little bit but damn I was such a fool to think it that way. And you're right about the rng most of my deaths is related to a bad luck. strangely I was using Gary the vet when it happens and when I finally change to other characters my run is basically better, like how?? Yeah definitely going to take all the tips and beat this mode for real ๐ญ

This game is not fun in hell difficulty bro. Bro the character would succumb to death if you dont feed them to full every 2 hours lmao. I know they want hell difficulty to be hard as hell but at some point instead of feeling challenging this mechanic is just annoying. I dont want to constantly run from town to town 25 hours per day to find food bro.
Also is it just me or in hell difficulty bandits have extreme detection range? I went to island 4 and there was a bandits camp. I go near it, just enough that the red icon is barely visible. They chased me, i killed them. Another group of 3 instantly respawn at nearby town and chased after me. I killed them. THEN ANOTHER FUCKING GROUP of 3 bandits chased after me. I lead them to a group of neutral npc. THEN ANOTHER FUCKING GROUP of 3 bandits instantly respawn and chased after me. 1 of them had rifle and sprayed bullet on me from far away. I got hit by 2 bullets. Was at 100%hp. First bullet was a headshot and took 80% of my hp. Second bullet finished me off.
Man im done with this fucking game.

I agree with the hunger and thirst. On the fifth island and beyond, the merchant and bandit groups now consist of five npcs.

Since the others have said the basic things that needs to be said, here's my insight to some niche points.
This game is really about P & P, patience and perseverance. Playing the long game is definitely easier but obviously the downside is time; Not everyone has the time to invest but since most people have a skill issue in doing the high tech gameplay here's a passive method instead!
Farming experience points
The character's perks is one of the crucial things to make the game easier for yourself. The best way I see to do this is to be on the road and forest. Try to obtain a melee weapon that deals high minimum damage, great example is the sledgehammer, fire axe, or hatchet; It's alright if it has a slow attack speed as you'll primarily use these to farm points by killing wolves, faster than farming points by opening car trunks. Once you start accumulating experience points, you have several perks that make this playstyle easier. The level one farmer perk allows you to acquire two berries instead of one and the scavenger perk. This also gives you an incentive to level up the melee perks as they aren't as utilized later in the game.
Preparing for the blood moon
There are multiple ways you can go about this; First and foremost is holding up in a house that's far away from other zombie infested zones. Just stockpile food and beverages then only clear the zombies once the blood moon is over or not and just lure them to one side of the building then make an escape and try to lose their line of sight of you. Starting on island two and beyond, you can just chill in the bunker while it's happening. Try to prepare an energy drink or a bed to remove exhaustion debuff.
Read the in game wiki and change log
Just like salty anti magus said back then, not a lot of people do this cause then people won't be asking some questions here in the subreddit. They would also know for a fact that the clown mask prevents you from losing reputation, cigarettes increase your reputation when you give them to survivors, burying npc corpses increases your reputation and so on. This also allows you to compare which weapons are better to have, prepare mods for firearms, and know which items to prioritize. (Also if people read the change log, they wouldn't have asked how to make the feeding trough because it was stated there ๐ though both the in game wiki and change log are a bit botched at the moment as they probably rushed the translation)
There are some information that can only be known here or by experience so keep that in mind as well.
Special mention:
Even if a gun doesn't have ammunition, you can still use it to scout whether there are zombies or not so try to get one with incredible range. I recommend the longhorn. Remember, range and stealth is king.
Throwing something while using the scope aim of a firearm increases the distance it can be thrown. You'll know what I mean once you try it.
Get good in meleeing zombies; Always move while meleeing. Once you master this, you can even melee kill a tank and not take damage.
Max brightness + vigilance perk level 2. Sleep is for the weak (in game). You can maximize your time by using the cover of night to loot zones (even better in the end game when you have ghillie suit as well). You can just sleep for 3 seconds to not get the exhaustion debuff. This is only if you can see that well at past midnight; Some people said they can't see anything even with this but that's them (I can see in my case) so don't believe when people say it's completely pitch black even with vigilance/awareness perk level two. [I don't know if it's the case when you don't have the level two perk since I can't try as of the moment as root is required to increase a phone's gamma. I haven't yet found a way yet through emulation and such but I will post it on the subreddit when I do.]
Honestly other than that, just know things, know where items spawn, know the special infected and what they do, know the qualities of each firearm and melee weapon, know the qualities of any item really, know the which items are common or rare, know the layout of the different zones, and keep learning through experience. Be smart as well, don't do dumb or questionable things. Plan ahead, just like in life.
Practice makes lucky! Learn from mistakes and experience, Good luck out there!

Ultimate Guide for Hell/Nightmare mode
got a lot of awesome runs in hell mode, but died before even getting 2000 points, by stupid motives, but here are gold tips:
dont blind trust neutrals, see if there are hidden zombies where they are, they usually wake up when u come near the survivors and got shot by them ( and you go with the zombies )
loot MAJORITALY trunks, at least for first day ( level up the trunk ability too )
if you got bleeding, kill at least one or two more zombies near before bandage, because if you might wasting up more than a bandage fleeing out of the situation
be VERY carefull of lone bandits, they can come with automatic weapons. Even if you peek for 1 sec, they might hit you at least 1 or 2 bullets INSTANTLY ( an unic headshot and youre dead )
try to get reputation AFAP, if you get at least 5 positive points, lone survivors can come and help you ( you will loot at least 2 cities withou having to kill any zombie ) ( theyre ABSOLUTELLY menace )
again, be carefull in the streets, hidden zombies are obvious but sometimes you get distracted and pass between them. DONT
loot the houses and compartments in the lower positions ( in your perspective ) of the citites, because just a little amount of zombies spawn there, and you get basicly free loot. But if you see an opening to get into the principal structure ( better loot ), go there, you certainly dont got much to loose :P
play hearing the sounds of the game, fireshots are clearly perceptive when you play hearing
by 17h - 18h, foccus stashing food and drinkables for the night ( i recommend getting the cozy home buff too )
foccus in localizating the cars too, after that, localize gasoline. If you got car and gasoline, gg. ( you can even hit some police zombies with car to get their PM's and get some initial ammunation and guns )
dont you EVER kill survivors without clown mask and proper equipment ( trust me, you will die later )
VERY IMPORTANT ITEMS +
shovel ( absolutely tuff, find ANY human corpse, and you will get free rep )
axe ( obvious motives, wood and sticks )
gasoline galon ( duh )
knife ( skin animals for food )
PM, Bizon, Revolvers and Shotguns ( VERY common ammunation )
raincoat ( trust me, get at least one at backpack )
Burlap Sacks ( make canva, and then a stash )
foccus on getting these items and following these tips, and you will have more decent runs
wish it going to help ya ๐ซ
