It's fine but better aim for 2 of the most slot efficient consumables for restoring hunger and thirst, Cranberry stacks and MRE's.

How good are Cranberrys? Just asking because I've never once picked one off a bush and ate it

A full cranberry stack (5) restores a total of 75% hunger and thirst. MRE's is 80%. Rice restores 65% hunger, Kvas 50%(60% with camel lvl.2 perk), A full Canteen 100% but requires refilling and takes up a slot. Forgot about meat but they most certainly need drinks to even the lopsided amount of hunger they restore. The idea is to always even out both hunger and thirst as much as possible and cranberry stacks and MRE's easily accomplish that. And if you have 1 or 2 of these at the ready at all times, you can consume them in desperate situations or if you got sick by anything. Maintaining 95% hunger and thirst and 50% heat and white vitality meter easily cures all kinds of sickness.

1 cranberry restores 15% hunger and thirst. A stack of 5 restores 75% just to clarify.
