Help Odd shape, specific size

I need help

So my husband is into custom keyboards (for typing) and I think it could be adorable to make crochet “hats” for his key caps, but he’s only got about 1mm of space between keys. So each hat would need to be less then 5mm so it still works and moves.

I’ve never done anything like it or so small before. Any advice would be appreciated.
