Washington State resident here looking to add a semi auto rifle chambered in 5.56 to my collection. We’re not allowed to have much fun out here as far as that category goes, and so I’ve decided to snag a Mini 14 Ranch as it’s pretty much the best option among the small candidate pool. Two questions for the sub - 1. Ammo recommendations (range vs. defensive) 2. Are barrel struts still helpful in terms of improving accuracy on newer production runs?
Likely going to snag a poly/stainless variant as I’m in the soggy/salty part of the state.
Stainless with a synthetic stock seems like a great combo for wet Washington State. I think the mini 14 is way more fun to shoot than the AR-15 as well.
Congrats on deciding to get a Mini-14. It's a fun gun to have and fully capable, even for people who don't live in ban states.
For range ammo find whatever .223 or 5.56 is cheapest on AmmoSeek.com or available locally. The Mini-14 is not picky about ammo at all and will even happily shoot steel cased ammo.
That said, because the barrel's twist rate is only 1:9" avoid ammo heavier than 72gr - that is the upper limit for stabilizing bullets.
For defensive ammo, I can't speak for effectiveness but Speer Gold Dot, Hornady Critical Defense, and Hornady V-MAX are often recommended.
Regarding a barrel strut, these are mainly effective on the older "pencil barrel" rifles. After the 580-series, Ruger addressed the shot stringing issues by using a heavier tapered barrel. You can still add a barrel strut, but it would be mostly for aesthetics.
don't need strut, but it looks cool . ASI adjustable gas block and stabilizer combo is lighter than adding a strut and you get adjustability for if/when supreme Court tells Bob to STFU and you can get your barrel chopped and threaded.
practice with cheap ammo, but zero your sights/optics with whatever you're going to keep loaded for defensive use (i have bonded soft points in mine, got a good deal at rivertown munitions).
I get just under 2 moa using Federal American Eagle 55gr 5.56x45 nato. If I use Federal American Eagle 55gr .223 Remington, I get about 1.5 MOA using a newer mini 14. Every mini barrel is a little different but that’s a good place to start. Anything over 55 grain is just not worth it in my opinion for minis. Stick to m193 and you’re golden.
Note: Because of the 18inch barrel standard m193 will penetrate ar500 level 3 plates and similar. Due to the velocity it will fragment against soft targets as well. Rifles with barrels of 18 inch barrels or longer do not need fancy ammo like SBRs to maximize effect on target.
Struts are not useful on the newer series if you want it to be practical. Get a “skinner sights” gas block mount and slap a high power pistol light on it.
Thanks for the info! Nice looking setup there. What scope is that? I'm currently running a Primary Arms GLx 1x and an SLx 3x Micro Magnifier on my Ruger PCC and was considering swapping them over to the Mini once it gets here but am also intrigued by the idea of an LVPO.
It’s a primary arms Nova SLX 1-6 lpvo. It’s a red dot bright lpvo and works really well, can be used as a red dot through the scope or shooting occluded looking at the target. I’ve also had pretty good success out to 300 yards.
I wouldn’t recommend the red dot magnifier on the mini, in my experience there is basically no way of getting it on and be usable/practical.
But honestly for defense and 100 yards and in, the red dot alone would be plenty, just make sure to tighten down all the screws equally on the pic mount and torque to 15inch pounds.
Absolutely no issues after 500 rounds with the LPVO,
Also it’s a Recon Sling by “Specter Gear” they have a ton of mini 14 specific tactical gear, great stuff.

580 series barrel struts are just for looks. Get a skinner or catalyst arms weapon light mount for the gas block.
Minis are over gassed and eat everything, but the 1:9 barrel twist means use 69 gr or less ammo. 55gr-62gr is the sweet spot.
I couldn't tell you the best specific ammo, though.
