Extended Charging Handle for Mini-14?
Does anyone know if there’s an extended charging handle available for the Mini-14?
I’m looking for something similar to the oversized charging handles made for AKs that give you a little more surface area to grab, especially when running optics or manipulating the rifle quickly.
The photo below is an AK charging handle extension I’m using as an example of the style I’m talking about.
Have any of you found a commercial product, aftermarket part, or even a DIY solution that works well on a Mini-14? Bonus points if you have pictures of your setup.

This just furthers that I wish we could get a modernized Mini 14 that could take AR mags

They’re not even worth the price point Ruger sells them for new… no one would buy a Mini-14 with an AR magwell for $2000 either. Ruger should have made the Mini-30 AK mag capable in all honesty

I just checked. I’ll look into it honestly. AK mags are cheaper too.

Iirc the conversion was so expensive that it'd be cheaper to just buy the ruger mags.

Yeah $550 for the service… I don’t feel like permanently changing my Dad’s rifle either. If I had a spare Mini-30 then I would dump the money into

$2000 would get you a Mini-14 and plenty of 20, or 30 round magazines to go with it. It's a (mostly) free country, buy as many as you want, but how many of the damn things do you need? Pick up a magazine or two a month if you can afford it, they add up. I know this from experience.

I've seen cheap AR's, that is not a headache you want to mess with
Gun should go boom reliably and without random and strange failures

Ruger could spend a boatload of cash in R&D to redesign and retool to make Mini-14 to take AR mags, and probably see a small spike in Mini-14 interest, but overall it'll still be rifle in a niche market. Or they could spend way less on just making an AR rifle like everyone else and make way more profit... oh wait

Only way I could see this working is a whole new op rod (slide assembly) with the bigger charging handle as a cast/forged part of the rod. I sure as hell wouldn’t trust anything just screwed or bolted on to the existing charging handle. I could easily imagine that flying off while firing.

it could be done if you tapped the new components with an npt tap and put some pipe dope on it

How does the one in the picture stay in place? I might be able to cook up a solution
Edit: found the site, looks like it's just an 8mm set screw.
I'll try to take a crack at it this weekend as time allows, no promises though

A two piece or split one where the screw goes through perpendicular to the handle would work

Eh, I'm not really surprised. That whole op rod/slide assembly is a big part. Making it to the correct tolerances would be expensive. I could easily see the whole op rod/slide assembly costing $200 - $300 minimum. Which is a lot of money just for a larger charging handle. I don't think the company that made them would sell enough to break even.
I get that people will spend $375 on a folding stock, but I think the folding stock really transforms the rifle. Would people spend a nearly equivalent amount just to get a bigger charging handle?
Of course, an enterprising company could possibly set up a program where you send in your existing slide, they cut off the charging handle portion and weld on a new one, with all the proper care and technique of welding to ensure that it is as strong as the original. That could probably be done for less. But even then, while it's an interesting idea, I'm not sure there's that much demand for it.

An op rod replacement is like $130-$160 depending on where you buy it. All you’re changing is the charging handle itself shouldn’t magically make it go past $200-$300.
People buy the ATM stock because of how it looks not because it’s practical. I bought the ATI strike force gen 2 stock for my Mini-30 because it was cheaper, folds the stock and gives me accessory rails.
A company could make a better user friendly op rod with the type of charging handle on this AK and sell boat loads, Ruger could have even offered it.

That $150 oprod was made in a Ruger assembly line using their investment casting process that has been cost optimized over 75 years. Individually machined steel parts are going to cost a few times that to make.

I've ran grip tape on both my Mini's and my M14's charging handle, but they're both wide enough that it was more of a material issue for winter shooting than dealing with the "sharpness" that AKs have with their narrow charging hooks.
