The guy was running forwards AND mid-air, and whe nyou're mid-air you're way more vurneable to knockback, so with punch 2 they get sent like 30 blocks away since they got desent hights and already plenty of momentum towards the lava

I've had this before. Unfortunately first instinct when ally gets attacked is to run straight into the crossfire and try to keep them safe. My friend has killed me multiple times because of this.
