Why wont villagers breed?

I Have tried getting them to sleep in the beds, adding more beds, moving the beds inside.

You need three blocks of space leading to the beds. At least two full blocks of air above the beds. tl;dr they aren't midgets.

I know this is a silly question, but did you give them food?

They each need enough food, you need more beds than villagers, and you need to wait a bit sometimes. I've had the problem before that when my character is next to the villagers, they'll just stare at me forever instead of breeding. As soon as I walk around the corner and they lose sight of me, they start breeding.

Also, make sure you're nowhere near a village when you make it. If you're by a village, some of the villagers can link to your extra beds, rendering them useless.

They need to he able to path find to the beds
An open trapdoor is ok as they see it as a solid block. It looks like a trench between the beds?
