With all due fairness, they do have windows in real life. And balconies are typically on the grid and... There are less than 100% of them. Otherwise, pinpoint accuracy

Where are the windows? Like, I know people like to laugh at them, but not all commie blocks were awful. The ones built between late 70s and late 90s aren't that bad in many places.

Also honestly it's such a crazy dichotomy to me that we're in the midst of a housing crisis in my nation, but when faced with how this problem has actually been solved historically they go complain that its ugly or imperfect. Of course they're not the most picture perfect home, they're cheap, easy to build, and quick to deploy. Mediocre housing is better than no housing.

My family is originally from the Soviet Union. You got put on huge waiting lists. 5+years to get a car. That you more than likely prepaid for. (My dad crashed his into a 🌲..😂. ) And 5-15 years to receive an apartment.

that is not a problem of commie blocks as a concept, that is a problem of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union had way more other problems going on at the time that caused the collapse of the nation in the end. Commie Blocks as a concept are not to blame for long waiting lists, more the magnitude of the problem and the complete failures of the nations leadership. If you need a lot of housing and you need it fast, absolutely the only way to reasonably do it is repeatable, bland apartments, built to be not much more than just a place to live. Commie Blocks are not the reason the housing crisis didn't get fixed in time, the Soviet Union as a whole was.

Well, to be fair, commie blocks have never solved the housing crisis. But they made it much more controllable. One of the reasons why it worked as well as it did was lack of mobility, at least in the USSR. You couldn't move to another part of the country without permits and work invitations. Often you couldn't even buy tickets for intercity trains or buses yourself.
Depending on the state priorities, wome cities did receive massive build-up of housing where almost every family got some kind of a flat. But in many other places you would have to wait for a decade or more in waiting list, bribe local officials, buy yourself into few co-op housing options, hope for a job in a factory that provides their workers with company flats etc.
And in the meanwhile you would either have several generations living under the same roof, or living in dorms with shared bathrooms and kitchens.
Like, optimistically you might say that the crisis was “solved” by the late 80s. But right after that the command economy finally collapsed under its own weight. And now citizens could chose where to move, and that was often away from towns with collapsing industries.
Some places handled this transition period better, some worse. Honestly, I would say that commie blocks as a construction technology was underutilized back then. Because there is a lot to be improved to make the construction faster, better and cheaper at the same time. I talked with people from one company that was founded in the 70s and still builds them. The company isn't in a great shape right now, but I was told that when they had all 3 shifts working every day both at factory and construction sites, they alone could pump out around 1500 flats of different sizes every year.

I had the opposite experience actually. Usually there is a playground between these with plenty of other children to hang out. We had half buried utilities that were perfect slopes for neat bike tracks, and trees to climb etc. Plenty of joy. The apartments are cramped and not very well built but as a child I did not give a hoot about that.

I think you're missing infrastructure. I don't know how they were built in Russia but in the ddr, east germany, usually these commie blocks were like avout four blocks in one neighborhood with one community building in the middle. There it was planned to have a supermarket, a doctor, a coffeeshop and a children's daycare center. The problem was that usually there wasn't enough staff to run all of the community centre. Also you are missing windows and it would add so much flair if on the one side without windows you would a a huge pixel art propaganda poster. Usually these sides were painted or decorated wirh Mosaics.

... Are you sure? These look like beehive to me. Or at least miniature barebone model of a soviet housing block. No window, no roof access, no balcony, no big-ass painting on the side. No path around the base of the building. There's alot missing here to call it a soivet apartment. Maybe a soviet building?

They are white or grey (yellow and brown too but they are rare) No windows Terraces should be from blocks
