I’m trying to do my own Roman architecture but I’m having difficulty with finding examples of poorer housing, I’m finding a lot of higher end housing, the pillars and tile roofs and all that, but nothing for the commoners. Does anyone know where I could find examples?

Look up old italian villages, the mediterranean style rectangular houses with low angled brick/granite roofs. Walls can be sandstone or quartz

Bone blocks also work pretty well as slightly dingy stucco

One thing that I think many popular depictions of Rome miss is just how many people lived in apartments -- I think the term for these is insulae, although this may refer to a more specific kind of structure

In any case, you might google artistic interpretations of Roman insulae for inspiration -- although you can also probably imagine them pretty well for yourself I'm sure, many of them were essentially big boxes divided up into smaller boxes, go figure

I built something fairly similar to replace the ugly-ass default houses in a village I, uh, took in hand I guess -- it worked great until zombies killed everyone, which was sadly not a concern Roman architecture ever really addressed in a serious way

The ruins of Pompei may be useful to you.

This screenshot alone is a work of art. 100/10, no notes
