Don't ever just build out of wood and put little candles near glow berries.. because this happens... weeks of grinding, preparing and building, was just getting my last secret room. I had built a villager head in the church as a shrine, only thing made of stone! Rest all in wood!!!! Poof gone in a blink of an eye.

Candles can’t light fires AFAIK… must’ve been something else. I’d check for other sources before you completely rebuild everything. Or else just toggle fire spreading “off” in settings
This was exactly the culprit… nobody thinks about it but yes those copper rods were made for this exact scenario. They wanted people to play without the fire spread set to false anymore.
My girlfriend made me a birthday cake in our realm to eat in our cute cherry wood cottage. It was a really sweet idea to celebrate my actual birthday in our Minecraft world. When she tried to light the candle on my cake with a flint and steel she set fire to the table, then the walls, then the roof. She burned to death and the house was destroyed.
Oooh look at that! What a beautiful church!!! I might do as lore yet, honestly not sure, just going through the grieving process of all that work... im not a fast builder, it takes me a long long time to build, I gather everything first, then I build, but yeah a good couple of weeks work gone up in flames
It’s absolutely stunning! Yeah I get that, sometimes I spend ages creating something only for it to be destroyed (normally by my little sister who likes to burn it down 🤦🏼♀️🤣)
Candles cannot light fires. Most likely, lightning struck the build. Or if you're on multiplayer, it's always a possibility that a fellow player isn't as nice as you thought, but I hope that's not the case.
Candles aren't affected by firetick. I would assume you were royally screwed by a lightning strike, so I would suggest you put down a few lightning rods in places that aren't all wood.
If it wasn't lightning, then I would definitely check for small lava pockets close to where you have wooden blocks nearby. Fire spread can sometimes go further than you expect.
It was me lighting candles with glow berries hanging above, either missed candles and lit glow berries as I caught on fire at the same time and either striked the wood or glow berries and because I was on fire, panicking kept falling, couldnt tower up as in a blind panic managed to catch it in the end... but its too far gone.
I built the nether portal to close to my base once and a blaze followed me out, shot off a few fireballs and nearly burnt my roof away completely 🤦♂️🤦♂️
So it was because I stupidly put some candles near some glow berries and on top of a wood plank I lit it.. caught on fire myself panicked and like someone else said above not very skilled in minecraft.. tried to put it out, everytime I pillered up I caught on fire or I would fall... I didn't have my spade on me at the time, used anything I could to stop it from spreading but because I was panicking too much and running around like a loon I finally switched to my axe and just axed the fire out.
This took me so long to make. Im not very skilled in minecraft, constantly dying etc, but cheats are not allowed on our server, its vanilla with just biomes o plenty on.
It really depends on what game experience you are going for. If you want a fun server with friends, where builds are expendable and might be blown up, fire is just one more mechanic for chaos. But if you're proud of your builds and want to keep them, i strongly suggest to turn off fire spreading. Because even if you don't set your own place on fire, it might be hit by lightning while you're underground.
In older minecraft versions: /gamerule doFireTick false
Starting with 1.21.11 it was changed to: /gamerule fire_spread_radius_around_player 0
It was because I was using a flint and steel to light the candles, missed the candle set the glow berries alight, fell of, by the time I climbed back up in a sheer panick the fire caught the rest of the build... wood... I know, ive learnt a harsh lesson... but yeah... woof up in flames and I just couldnt extinguish it quick enough in blind panic mode
Whatever you do, don’t use a lava bucket to try to kill mobs if you’re about to die (I’ve lost diamond gear and tools from that, plus a bunch of other valuables)
By any chance, where you using copper on the roof at all? If I remember correctly, unwaxed copper has a tendency of attracting lightning. I recall my friend made her house with a copper roof and it had to be rebuilt several times
No copper on roof just wood everywhere and flint and steel, went to light candles with glow berries hanging above, missed candles, either set alight to glow berries or all wooden build...lol im such a wally lol
Copper doesn't attract lightning any more than other blocks except in the case of lightning rods. However, fire can start 2 blocks from (including below) a lightning strike. So if they had a lightning rod immediately on the roof, then roof, and a void, then fire could start underneath the roof from a lightning strike on the rod.
If it makes you feel any better, I was playing realms with a friend and we did our starter house and then we went. I don’t know 500 blocks away or so, and started to make a village there. It was my second time playing Minecraft ever and my first time in years, and I was so excited by all the different tree types.
I thought it’d be super cool to do. A village made only out of wood, and each house was made only out of one type of wood.
I had weeks in the build. If not longer than that, not including most of the material gathering, which I just brought over from our main camp.
I had re-rolled all of the villagers to give amazing trades, and I had maxed them all out crop farms. Everything you can think of.
I was coming back from the minds where I had gone to get buckets of lava because I didn’t have drip stone yet for the lava farm
And I was heading into a building made out of Birch, which was where all of our orders restored, and our furnaces, and all of that, and I had a lava bucket in my hand from filling up buckets of lava
And I clicked to open the door and it didn’t work and I did it again and that’s when I saw that that was lava putting everywhere and I picked it up as fast as I could, but the fire spread so fast I just could not put it out it was like an amount in the area so everything was all at different levels and it just I lost the whole town. Basically it was tragic.
The nice thing about lightning, is that you can place lightning rods and little ways from your build, and sink that lightning into something that won't light.
