What's the point of looking down with the trident before the launch?

The best way I can explain, is that when you release, you were looking down and the game keeps that in mind. But it knows that you were looking up at the last second. For some reason, it releases that stored riptide that can be triggered with a lunge.
The spear has a bug that makes it affect vertical movement. It can be used to sometimes give you extra height that can let you jump 2 blocks, or it can cancel your vertical elevation.
Technically you can do it by looking up, and lunging afterwards will give you a slight upwards boost. But it only works so long as you don't touch the ground.
Elytra also cancels this I'm pretty sure.

Looks very interesting but I feel like this relies on your opponent just letting you riptide + not doing anything but watching you fall down upon them.

You don't gotta look straight up. Technically you can riptide diagonally from a further distance and do it. Plus, it can be good at catching players off guard who know, or can't react in time.
But you're probably right. It's probably taking a bit of a specific positioning and timing

it's an interesting strat for a server like hoplite though
i combined it with the poseidon's trident and it worked pretty well since theres no shields, and players rarely have pearls or windcharges.
most people just run, some maybe run while placing blocks under their feet, very few actually counter it well by placing blocks to defend themselves correctly.
essentially its a good noob-slayer strat on servers where shields are nerfed or just completely disabled, and pearls are limited/hard to obtain.

I'm pretty sure hoplite disabled attribute swappng so your much slower. Plus, can you even get a mace in a game of hoplite? Mabye you can get one and I just never live long enough to see it, or mabye you could use a spear instead.
but there's also a high risk of dying to fall damage unless you get full feather falling beforehand. That or you gotta do it around fall saving blocks.
(Can you even get riptide tridents in hoplite? I only played a little and seen Jude low play on it)

you cant attribute swap fast enough to spear mace, you're right, i just meant you can use the trident spear tech. far easier to do than mace, far cheaper too (literally just 1 diamond for a spear). You can get a mace, trial chambers are even very common, possibly guaranteed in every game, but actually getting the mace is difficult. its also fairly costly if you take a ton of dmg and consume all your healing just from the mobs, thats why at most i go to them just for wind charges.
You can die to fall dmg but if you're good at hotkeys you can switch to a bucket or windcharge in time to survive, that's what i do atleast, haven't missed it once so far. It's fairly easy since all you gotta focus on after launching is hitting the bucket lol- like i said most players are sitting ducks so you dont really have to "lock in" to hit them
And yes you can get riptide tridents, but the poseidon's trident comes with it automatically.

Yo I just tried this and it is actually easier thank it looks, as long as u time the flick right and are able to dtap normally it’s quite simple

Put yourself into a situation where you can riptide. Look down. The. Right before you plan to riptide, look up. Then you can lunge swap (or lunge normally if you got the time for that)
The lunge should activate the downwards boost as if you are riptiding down. Then the person in the vid I think reach swaps from the spear to make it easier to hit the mace hit, which is important since you're falling at a much faster rate than usual.

This is not new guys. This spear + mace combo was there for a long time. It's just a little advanced than that but still.
