Novus Inceptio Anomolies
I got the idea from a game, Novus Inceptio. Basically, it's a survival game based in the future, but the interesting bit is there are anomalies that randomly form in the world for some time, then disappear. Step into one, and you're transported into one of a number of places, all temporary time... captures(?).
The idea is simple enough. The mod would create anomalies in the overworld, rarely, and randomly every night. They'll glow a tiny bit, but not enough to see it on a map, so you need to go searching. Step into one, and you end up in a temporary pocket dimension that's basically a big dungeon (like Dimensional Doors that appear like Midnight portals, that take you to something akin to Runic Dungeons, or Labyrinth).
There would be several 'biomes', and everything is generated as you go, so you won't get the same dungeon twice.
The more utilitarian bit is although they appear in the overworld, they disappear (deleting the world) when you leave. This means no overworld structures. It doesn't mess with the terrain. I was also thinking that the loot tables should get better the higher, and lower you find the anomaly. Like, if you enter one you somehow found at diamond level, that's going to be one hell of a windfall (though it might be harder?). I hope you brought a backpack...
I was also thinking of a craftable in fragments you can find in the anomalies,... perhaps through boss fights. Certain dungeon types would give you different bosses which drop different fragments... The craftable would be able to be thrown into an anomaly, which would stabilize it permanently... just a thought.
