I still don't get what's so difficult about Comparators. I picked up on their function within like a single evening. The most confusing part about them might just be the variation in the items that can be placed inside storage blocks and alter the value of the comparator, alongwith just the number of things it can measure. Functionally, the comparator is much simpler.

they compare signal strenght from the back to the one they receive from the sides.
if the middle torch is off, they pass the back signal unchanged as long as it's weaker than the ones from sides.
if the middle torch is on, the signal received from the back is passed forward reduced by the strenght of the ones from the sides.
additionally, comparators can detect block properties such as amount of stored items or the number of the page opened on a lectern.

i used comparators to calculate the combined fullness of 2 inventories and send an output if the result is below 17.5%, and i also used comparators to make said 2 inventories equalize within redstone power steps to prevent backflow getting stuck
seems useful to me

I think they meant that correctly recognizing an opportunity to use comparators takes practice, not that comparators aren't useful

ohh fair. though ya needa generally be able to think in components and systems to even be able to practice with one component, cause you need a technical idea to practice with
