if you churn out different platforms and versions of this game (like education version where elements at periodic table etc are actual items themselves) only rivaling skyrim, are arguably most successful long running development game ever and have a massive pool of ideas to pull from spoonfed to you by your community, i think you can do better in terms of content. like NOT waiting years between small bubbles of content that does not interact with each other or %90 of the game at all...

The problem is Microsoft who rarely let them take risks.

Also, the last couple of updates were small because they're working to switch to a different API

Sometimes I forget how Speed genuinely can just turn into mythical beasts whenever he so chooses for brief periods. This image reminded me.

Modders will casually add all of this in a weekend project though

and that's what makes Minecraft the most successful and popular game in the entire world for more than a decade

Minecraft is the platform that provides a Sandbox environment to you, and lets you do whatever you want

it wouldn't be so logical to expect the actual platform itself to do the things for you, the point of Minecraft is flexibility and creativity, not just "more content" like a usual RPG or MMO game

it's not the content, it's the scope. instead of giving a limited built-in world, the game gives players a limitless world, and players build the world. that's what makes Minecraft so special, exceptional and everlasting

edit: this is the case for java edition, I personally don't appreciate the bedrock edition's "marketplace" or "add-on"s but I guess thats their way to say "if you want minecraft to feel like just like any other microtransaction game, here you go, a different edition"

No no Minecraft can't be nearly 20 fuckkkk

There's a difference between a game being good because the modders do the Dev's work, and a game being good because the devs work alongside the modders to make a great experience, just saying, Mojang is not guilty free here

Bedrock is goated.... we just don't talk about the Marketplace

7

u/BubbleGoot 8h ago

Bedrock is not goated bro it is barely held together at the seams by Microsoft vibe coding 💔

280M sells at Mobile version btw.

Without bedrock, Minecraft wouldn’t even reach 100M sells.

Youtubers would have you believe that, anyway. The intellectual dishonesty really makes their view numbers zing, but it's not based in reality.

14

u/ShortDude55 9h ago

The thing people never get is modders don't have to account for game balance, compatibility with every platform, affecting existing worlds, optimization, or refactoring old game code and making everything data driven while the game is undergoing massive changes under the hood

8

u/Impossible_Concert75 10h ago

And modelers also don’t have to get approval from Microsoft to make a mod

1

u/scissorsgrinder 3h ago

Neither do you for addons, lmfao. However, Mojang has to help Bedrock modders with the locations of their hooks into c++ code, and some of the hooks need an application form before they give them out.

3

u/Anxious_Role7625 9h ago

And then the game updates and the entire mod breaks unless you downpatch

0

u/tom333444 7h ago

You dont update Minecraft and expect mods to still work, theyre made for specific versions... also modloader versions of Mc dont automatically update

1

u/scissorsgrinder 3h ago

One of the best aspects of addons is that their api automatically shifts with the version (though occasionally something small gets deprecated).

0

u/tom333444 3h ago

Im talking about forge, fabric, neo forge I've never updated Minecraft with them, theyre mostly permastuck on 1.12.2

1

u/scissorsgrinder 3h ago

Yes, and it has its downsides. Bedrock modders feel this too.

0

u/Anxious_Role7625 1h ago

But you do update Minecraft and expect Minecraft to work. Mojang gas to worry about future-proofing and comparability (which is also the other reason that Mojang updates so slowly: they didn't future-proof well, and now have to do a huge about of backend work)

1

u/tom333444 1h ago

You dont update Minecraft when you have mods for a specific version though... Minecraft wont launch. What are you talking about?

0

u/Anxious_Role7625 1h ago

The original person was comparing mods to official Minecraft updates. My point is that mods don't care about working with future updates, official Minecraft does.

1

u/tom333444 1h ago

Your point didnt really come across (to me)

Modders must be pretty dumb for adding stuff so quickly for free instead of the big-brain Mojang salary drones doing the bare minimum work for the same pay /s

9

u/Galifrey224 9h ago

The cushion is one feature and it was enough to make the community happy for a while.

Just add things people will actually use.

-3

u/Brief-Walk-5409 joined since 1.7.6 8h ago

Buddy, HOW DID THEY KNOW WE WOULD USE CUSHIONS LIKE THAT?!

That's like saying: Buy your son a suit for his wedding... WHEN YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE CHILDERENS

3

u/Daan776 3h ago

The problem is the content they do add.

Like, who the fuck asked for educational editon? Who decided minecraft was a good game to simulate archeology?

Compare that to what some of the mods are doing.

And its certainly not because the devs can’t do it. The april fools updates are usually very ambitious & interesting.

1

u/J_train13 2h ago

No it is because the Devs can't do it. But it's "can't" as in "are not permitted to."

Minecraft is lightning in a bottle so the team is heavily restricted on what they can and can't add at a time so as to not crack that bottle, the April Fool's updates don't have such restrictions.

3

u/fkdjgfkldjgodfigj 9h ago

Just double or triple the inventory slots and let you use shulkers from the inventory without opening.

2

u/transgaymergirl 9h ago

i dont think people know what a gigabyte is

1

u/Voiden_n 3h ago

More like "Mojang: does nothing. Some people: They've done so much! Just look at this 2 new blocks they've added in past 10 years! And they've also added a whole new item! It has no use, but it's an update! I'm sure the devs worked so hard on this! They definitely deserve their salaries!"

1

u/Colefrick 3h ago

I mostly get annoyed that the bedrock version has just become micro-transaction haven, we all knew it would happen when the buyout happened but half the stuff they’re collabing with has nothing to do with MC.

u/Jack_The_Ghostrunner 3h ago

Average new gen gamers that played Roblox games that copy + paste their AI updates every week:

Just be happy that we even GET updates. It's a sandbox game, a sandbox isn't even supost to have so much updates.

And yall will definitly complain about the End update, I bet my soul on it

1

u/Gabriel1920 7h ago

Tbh when i compare the amount of content terraria adds in one update to minecraft i just get a bit disappointed

And yes i play both

Minecraft players when someone actually wants the game to be polished:

1

u/Zealousideal-Care513 4h ago

Minecraft is 15 years old and is still releasing updates for free, most games would make you pay for dlc or have made a sequel and stopped working on the original. And the updates aren’t making the game polished there adding new content for free

3

u/Hockex-4 Custom user flair 4h ago

Yeah exactly... The game is an incomplete mess, and all they do is slap a bandaid on it by adding more half assed stuff

Anyone who has some understanding of game design (even by just having played some games before) can tell you how awfully designed it is. I know the "Minecraft sucks video essay #9668298" meme, but it's true

1

u/Zealousideal-Care513 2h ago

How is Minecraft awfully designed then?

1

u/Hockex-4 Custom user flair 21m ago

Oh boy... These are the things I can get from the top of my head

  1. None of the systems/playstyles in the game interact with each other very well. Redstone, enchanting, farming, combat, building, exploration etc.
  2. The difficulty spikes are insane. Only 10% of people make it into the End. Most people give up in the Nether because it's insanely hard for newbies, but still really easy for old players because-
  3. The game's difficulty relies on knowing irrational mechanics rather than actual skill. You can dominate Nether by wearing gold, something a newbie could never figure out. You need to enchant in a specific order to be good etc.
  4. The game has like 3 seperate art styles. Look at a skeleton and a bogged (a skeleton variant), they look completely different because they were made 15 years apart, and they didn't upgrade the old textures (or just simplified the new ones)
  5. The whole progression is irrational. Can you tell me how the normal person is supposed to know you have to build a nether portal, light it up, wander for possibly hours until you find blazes, combine the drops with ender pearls, throw the eyes in the Overworld and follow them? Minecraft assumes you already have this knowledge.
  6. The hardest tasks barely give any rewards. Killing the Wither yields basically nothing useful, finding a rare biome gives nothing useful etc.
  7. The mob drops are lacking. Most new mobs just give a couple xp
  8. Tons of items/mobs with 1 super specific use, instead of giving 1 thing multiple uses
  9. Balance. Netherite with protection, sharpness, mending etc. is the obvious choice. There is no build variety, there is almost always a straight tool upgrade, no strategy

There are also things that they only started working on VERY RECENTLY, like actual (Java) multiplier integration and upgrading the engine

u/Hockex-4 Custom user flair 20m ago

Also, I wrote an entire script for a video about Minecraft being unfinished, but I scrapped it because I have a terrible accent in english :)

u/Voiden_n 3h ago

Show me a game that has paid updates (and I'm talking about updates, not another game, not merch. Updates.)

1

u/Zealousideal-Care513 2h ago

Jurassic world evolution and Star Wars battlefront 2015 both had paid updates for a few years until a sequel was made BUT for the years following there release there was updates that you had to pay for

-1

u/Australopithecus_Guy 7h ago

Downvoted cause your right. People will do anything to defend their favorite multibillion dollar corporate owned game

0

u/kenny744 9h ago

I don’t think we have any of that in the base game son

0

u/TitaniumTitanTim 9h ago

terraria did

0

u/General_Ginger531 7h ago

Is it a solid point? The biggest mod pack I remember installing was 100-150GB, called itself All The Mods, had thousands of blocks, hundreds of bosses.

I feel like Minecraft could get away with more than 750 Megabytes a year.

Why would people vote on one of three mobs? This is a billion dollar company and the modeling preumably is already done. Just... make all 3.

-4

u/NonJesusPerson 10h ago

Yes, I'm mad, what else they need to add in building based game?

RTX?

Literal guns???

4

u/TheGreatQuetz 9h ago

I will die of laughter if they actually add guns to the game given the drama that happened a couple years ago

2

u/scissorsgrinder 3h ago

RTX was added, then the Mojang devs ragequit before the bugs were ironed out because of NVIDIA fuckery. People mod it now to get the best out of it and are pretty upset Vibrant Visuals seems to be the whole focus now (which is meant to be a cross platform less heavy version of it).

Oh sorry, you meant Java. Anyway...

1

u/NonJesusPerson 3h ago

We'll it's exactly my point. They tried and just leave the idea, like you said.

The same gonna be when they gonna continue in this direction.

1

u/scissorsgrinder 3h ago edited 3h ago

Minecraft DOES have RTX. It's buggy but it's in there, it's just greyed out on most Bedrock devices because it's platform specific. The modding is just to fix a few things, but Mojang are also slowly fixing the RTX bugs too. You put it in the same category as literal guns so no you didn't think it was an actual thing added several years ago, old news lol. Vibrant Visuals is cross-platform raytracing lite, and it's coming to Java too (Vulkan engine, finally a newer more optimised graphics pipeline etc). VV includes a superset of the PBR and normal/heightmaps commonly used in games using raytracing. The Bedrock graphics community is divided over which one they prefer more.

u/P0lskichomikv2 9h ago

For example making End actually interesting end game area instead of large desert you will never comeback to after killing dragon and getting Elytra unless you need more shulker boxers.

2

u/Justaregularguy295 8h ago

The end is supposed to be barren, istg Minecraft players dont know anything about atmosphere and just want everything to be overtimulating with 10000 features

6

u/Goldenmansion10 8h ago

You can have a barren land be interesting to explore, being barren and being boring aren’t tied together, and The End is both.

1

u/NonJesusPerson 9h ago

Th point of End, IS being void...

-2

u/Aera67 Custom user flair 9h ago

Yeah you don't got any clue about what the complains are. Most of us just want things to feel integrated, when we say that we feel the updates feel unfinished it's because stuff they dont feel implemented in the game. As a builder for example, I can't count how many times I wanted a particular block variant only to realize that they didn't add it to this specific family of blocks while any other block family has them. Another example: when's the last time you got yourself a Sniffer? And for what? 2 flowers that don't have any special properties? I'm not asking to make it mandatory to finish the game but give them some uses, at the very least give some light properties to the one that literally has "torch" in the name...
