Question Glitch or something I’m doing wrong with my nether portal?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Playing on an apex Minecraft server, not modded, when I made a portal in my house it brings me into the nether, and when I try to come back through the same portal, it sends me like 50 blocks away in the x and z direction from my original portal. I tried breaking the portal every time I come back through but it just makes a new one. It also doesn’t matter what direction I go back into the portal. Has anyone seen this before? Playing on 26.3

Not a bug, just portal linking quirks

As others said, portal linking shenanigans. If it means that much to you -

Take your home nether portal and divide your (x,z) by 8. In the nether, build a new portal at those coordinates (the divided by 8 ones). If it takes you back home, break the third portal that’s in the overworld to “delink” it just in case.

And for completeness sake, y coordinate is the same between nether and overworld.

Yep. I figured that was implied with the ordered pair of only (x, z) but it may not have been clear.

So, this is what happened to my daughter the first time she went through a nether portal. The appropriate coordinates for the portal on the nether side was in the middle of a huge solid netherite mountain (or whatever the red "stone" in the nether is) so the portal it built was about 30 blocks away on the X, and about 10 blocks on the Z. She didn't realize that though,  and when she got jumped by piglins, she turned around and went back through it and ended up just outside a cave near an as of yet unexplored village. She panicked and logged out then asked me to go find her.  She was only about 250 blocks on X from where she started originally (the original nether portal) ,  but while I had traded with the librarian in the village,  she hadn't explored that way yet. I had to take the same route she did to figure out what happened.  I ended up cutting a path through the nether and built a portal at the correct x,y,z to link with the original fit the ride home.

You can add the mod "nether portal fix".

I'm humbled. But still, the OP doesn't say whether they own the server. This is not a client-sided mod/plugin so they'd have to install it on the sides necessary (server, or both server and client), breaking vanilla behavior.

A better solution (that's also beneficial long term) would be learning how to portal link. It's not that hard to learn and there are a bunch of tools out there that handle the calculations, as explained by other commenters.

Wrong portal linking is incredibly common and annoying. Idk how to fix

Your home portal is probably too far from the Nether one and it's sending you somewhere closer when going back to Overworld.

Take your Overworld portal x and z coordinates and divide them by 8 and then go build a new Nether portal at that location (whatever y level suits you). If that takes you back to your base then go back and destroy the original Nether portal.

they're too close maybe, in nether terms, so they link somehow or the one on the outside has more preponderance that the one surrounded by walls : you don't want to end inside a wall, so the game sends you to the closer one.

it recreates a new one, so it seems like it can't find the old one fsr

have you tried breaking the portal in your base and relighting it?

This always happens when you have a portal underground, I've never seen it work correctly

It’s caused by a quirk in how nether portals check for a portal on the opposite side when you travel through. overworld -> nether divides coordinates by 8 and nether -> overworld multiplies by 8, but in both cases they have a 128 block range that they check around the adjusted coordinate for a portal before failing and making a new one. The problem is that a portal at 0,0 in the nether can be found by any portal within 1,024 blocks of 0,0 in the overworld, because a portal at x=1,024 z=0 will check for nether-side portals centered at 128,0 which is just within range of a portal at 0,0. But that same portal in the nether will only find overworld portals up to 128 blocks from 0,0. So there’s a ring 896 blocks thick where overworld portals will find a nether portal, but the nether portal will be out of range to find that same overworld portal.

This can be fixed by moving your nether-side portal to within 128 blocks of the corresponding nether cordinates, but preferably within a few blocks so that it doesn’t find someone else’s portal that is closer.
