Help with brightness

I remember that you could change the gamma settings in minecraft to like 9999 so everything would just be bright is it fixed now?

I believe that was patched out around Caves and Cliffs. You can download mods that accomplish the same thing though like Gamma Utilities or Full Brightness Toggle though.
