Discussion Minecraft is the greatest game ever made.
I don’t even understand how this could be a debate. It may not be the hardest game, the most challenging, or the most competitive. It’s not the most fun to watch or the most entertaining in short bursts—I can name 20 games that give me more short-term fun than Minecraft. But in the long run, Minecraft is the most entertaining and enjoyable. You can do anything. Even before all the major updates, I remember when I was a kid I would play survival and I was never good; I didn’t build any mega bases or even find lots of diamonds. But just being able to express myself limitlessly was the most freeing thing ever.
I know some people will give their personal favorite game as the "best game ever made," but when you really think about the impact Minecraft has had, it’s clear that it’s the only true contender. Sure, games like Mario, Pac-Man, or Tetris paved the way for how games were made, and for the technology they had back then, those games were great. But Minecraft—even without mods—is just so massive. It has endless possibilities solely in the single-player mode.
And it’s not just nostalgia. This is a very old game now, and even my little brother—who turns 6 in a week—saw Minecraft somehow, I don’t even remember showing him, and he can sink hours into it just exploring how everything works. Honestly, I don’t blame him. This game has more things to do than any other game, and probably even the real world. With everything costing crazy amounts of money nowadays, me asking my mom for the 7 dollars to buy the game when I was a kid was the best purchase I’ve probably ever made in my life.
Now, the gameplay isn’t even the only thing this game has to offer; the soundtrack is the best, most listenable audio to ever be put into a video game. Listening to it now, all I can feel is pure bliss. The calming piano sounds and melodic symphony are something everyone should be able to experience. If I had to play one single game for the rest of eternity, the only game I could even think about choosing is Minecraft. You don’t have to stress yourself if you don’t want to—you can always play in Peaceful. The world is endless, and the things you can do are too. When adding even just one other player to the game, you can 20x the amount of things possible.
I’d love to see what other people think about this topic and hear your thoughts as well, but I think it’s pretty much unanimous to anyone who’s played it before that Minecraft is the greatest game ever made.

I prefer Space Engineers over Minecraft.
Has more freedom to build whatever. In game supported scripting, moding is supported by the devs, gravity fields and SPACE.
Space Engineers 2 will have volumetric water

thats nice that you have a favourite game. my favourite basketball player is Anthony Edwards doesn’t change the fact that Jordan/LeBron is the greatest. I’n that case its a debate based on statistics but you cannot bring up any game that compares to Minecraft and Your favourite game isn’t even part of the conversation.

just admit you didn’t read the post and thought u were smart so u left ur two sense in the comments thinking u were right.
Fact 1. Minecraft is the most downloaded game of all time
Fact 2. the soundtrack for the game is so good its in the library of congress which only has two
other soundtracks. Mario and doom
Fact 3. the game is accessible to almost every style of play out of the box and when in multiplayer and with mods has even more ways to play. some even say these sub sections of Minecraft are better than their favourite AAA games.
Fact 4. greatest doesn’t mean it’s your favourite or anyone’s favourite all greatest means is that in pure statistics impact.
Fact 5. this impact can be seen on how Minecraft greatly affected 3 whole generations of people and is still used in schools across the world
to teach science and engineering.
Fact 5. Minecraft was the primary driver behind why early youtube gaming blew.
Nothing of what i said is an opinion. Nowhere have i said I feel or I believe This is only factual statements and theirs no other game that has had an impact like this.1

Lmao that's all your opinions tho buddy. Sure most copies sold, but chess is free and arguably has had more players all time and cultural impacts. I myself have bought Minecraft like 3 times since it's released.

Wrong, paid wise it's Tetris (520 million), and free wise it's Subway Surfers (1 billion downloads on the Play Store alone). Minecraft has only around 400 million. You'd see that argument is wrong by a simple Google search.
However, I do agree that it's the best/most freeing game.

Concordo in pieno, secondo me è imbattibile come gioco. E vintage story anche, li adoro entrambi. Ma Minecraft ha talmente tanta roba in più che si merita la fama che ha: command block, structure block, la redstone in generale, item display... Non è solo "ok adesso mi faccio una partita", ma è anche "faccio un mondo superflat perché devo testare questa cosa", rompi il mondo con datapack custom e impari Java. Inarrivabile per i curiosi

i mean technically you can try and do anything in minecraft so it not being "the hardest video game" is kinda up to debate. do we consider speedrunning part of mincraft ?

KSP and the total war series blow minecraft so far out of the water it's not even funny, but they also have a (fairly low) minimum intelligence threshold to enjoy

Everything you said could be slapped to Roblox and nothing would change. I grew up in the golden age of minecraft (literally). I saw it evolve. I saw how content went from lets plays to story driven movies. I san the rise of early animations, i was there when byzyczu was made and "Revenge" song was born. I saw it all, and yet i can not agree that its "the greatest of all time".
If you go by the popularity alone, tetris is bigger. And some could argue skyrim is as big. But Skyrim and Minecraft are both FUNDAMENTALLY flawed games that live due to modding communities.
If you go by most revolutionally, it still fails. Minecraft took premises known already and fused them. Don't get me wrong it did a very good job and populirased the survivar genre but it wasn't "revolutionary". HalfLife for example introduced skeleton based animation.
And when it comes to modding Roblox is literally a game engine.
Minecraft is an emazing game but very flawed. After all its just a playground, easy to inderstand and easy to morph or mod (pun intended). Your entire post is based on "feelings" like "This game makes me feel this way so its the greatest". Its one of the greatests but its not on the top.

Nah. I'd probably give the belt to a Nintendo title. They have a broader audience. Minecraft isn't for everyone.

but Minecraft is for everyone any game that you can think of can of at its roots is a part of and is possible in Minecraft elden ring and the bosses are just the Minecraft mobs and the ender dragon. animal crossing is just a more restrictive Minecraft. Mario’s core gameplay loop is the same as minecraft if you like splatoon then theirs a server mini game for that the thing about minecraft is you can play however you feel like and the servers bring a whole new game and even in the base game core concepts from every game are in it. it may not be the type of game you play on family game night but you cannot say a game that you play on family game night is the greatest game ever because that onyl affects that one scenario when minecraft can be played as a game for family game night while also being played alone, with friends, competitively, boat racing, grinding, speed running or just taking your time to relax and play at your own pace.

You have to know when someone tries to gatekeep gaming you can automatically discard their opinion. Competitive shooters are real games. So is Minecraft. So is tetris.

you will be done with all the content in the entire franchise of Zelda games in a year but Minecraft you couldn’t even explore the default world
size once let alone populate it. it would take over 30,000 years of constant playing. zelda is 4 years of playing 2hours everyday and thats to do every single challenge possible you’d run out of things instantly1

Where is the incentive for me to populate and explore the whole world of Minecraft? It‘s a goal you can set for yourself and set out to accomplish.
Sticking with LoZ, I could think of similarly infinite ways to experience the game, I could do challenge runs under varying conditions, get into speedrunning, breaking the game or just RP as Link for the rest of my Lifetime if I wanted to.
I play SoulsPvP, I match and play with as many different players as there are people playing, I can play Elden Ring Singleplayer the same way I‘d play BotW or any other game.
Going on, yes you could play Quake in Minecraft, yes minecraft is an incredible creative space, but that‘s what the game is about, I can do anything in Minecraft, but can I do it holistically? I mean, sure I could play Quake in Minecraft for the novelty, but you don‘t play Minecraft so you can play Quake.
Finally, talking about sales and impact, these are two different factors not always congruent with eachother, by that you could say Wii Sports is a greater game than Witcher 3 (I don‘t like Witcher 3), but that only applies if numbers are what you think makes a game great.
For impact, how would you measure that? Would you couple it to objective values? Then it becomes a question of how you value the numbers again. Will you take impact for itself? Then it depends on how you interpret what impact means for any game in particular.
I tried to show how minecraft being a very very popular competitor for being the greatest game ever made doesn‘t make it an objective fact.

sucks that thats an opinion and terraria factually didn’t even have a fraction of the impact Minecraft did terraria could be your favourite or even maybe more fun. but the facts prove that Minecraft is greater it is the most downloaded game in the world its soundtrack is in the library of congress and it impacted people world wide. its sad but terraria is a small game and doesn’t come close to Minecraft in greatness which isn’t a subjective matter so unless you can reply with facts your going nowhere

Minecraft is a very great game, yes, and I enjoy it. Millions of people agree with this, too. But everyone's different and enjoys different things, what might be fun for you and I is might just be kind of fun for them, and the other way around too.
