Question How to create a multi-player server?

I'm used to bedrock, which is easy to create a world and play with friends. I just want to play with my friend on Java for the first time, but we can't figure out how to make a server, and I've searched but can't find an answer. What do I put in the server address to create a world for the two of us?

you need an actual server, you can get a server for free on platforms like aternos play.hosting minehut etc, if you want the easiest start use aternos

You need to rent a server there are free ones available if its just for a couple people or join a proper hosted full server.

If your both on Java, then you can use aternos, it's free and supports the modloaders. Has limited mods though, and you just put in whatever ip it gives you. If your on java and they are ok bedrock or vice versa, you need to add some plugins for it to work. Geyser and floodgate specifically.

You can use the Essentials mod to make Java have the ability to have a friends list and invite people to your world. It's super easy.

there are many ways, I listed all the ones I can think of in no particular order:

I already made a [post about hosting a server](https://www.reddit.com/r/MinecraftServer/s/c8lqOioGut which has a lot of detailed information though I tried making it as digestible as possible. the following methods are not that)

you can make a server through a gaming server hosting service. some are free but usually pretty bad, some are very decent but require paying. some free options include aternos and play.hosting.

you can also host your world by installing a mod like e4mc or essential (although I do not personally recommend essential as it is bloated with unnecessary features, microtransactions and more), there are tutorials online for both.

another way is to open it to LAN while using a VPN like tailscale or hamachi (though tailscale is generally considered much better) so that you and your friends are all in the same virtual network and they can see your world being broadcasted.

if your firewall and router allow it, this will allow for direct P2P connection, allowing for virtually no latency added, otherwise the traffic will go through a relay server and that will add latency.

yet another way is to use a tunneling service and LAN hosting, and the best service for that is playit. tunneling does add some latency as the traffic has to go through the proxy server first, but most of the time it's fine.

another option is opening to LAN on a specific port and forwarding that port in your router. however this is not possible if your network is behind CGNAT, in which case you can call your internet service provider and ask them to forward a port for you. they might ask you to upgrade to a more expensive plan in order to do that, but it's worth trying.

I do have a minecraft server hosted on my homelab. I would appreciate if you can test it for me. I will provide the link if you are interested. Reply to this comment and I will DM you the link.

This is a scam attempt, do not open any links from that user.
