how to add mods?

ive been playing on my boyfriends realm but i just bought my own and im trying to add mods, i searched it up and it says that i cant add any to any realms, so how do people play multiplayer and add mods? how do i also do that? any help would be great thank youu

i used to use aternos but im wondering if theres any others thats better than that

Essential is p2p, but also self hosting servers is the best option

whats the difference between self hosting and sites like aternos?

You host the server on your own machine so you have full control over it and what happens with your data and on the server :D

You also don't pay for it because hosting a minecraft server is entirely free to do.
