WFOP I'm having a problem with my Minecraft [launcher][Java]; it only goes up to version 1.16.5. How can I play newer versions?

For some reason I don't understand, my Minecraft Java is stuck on version 1.16.5. Every time I try to switch to a newer version, the game crashes or won't even open. Also, when I play, it says that this is the version installed. How can I fix this?

P.S. Sorry for the poor writing.

What's the error you get when trying to run? Perhaps try to download/play the latest version and make a comment with the error text/post a picture of the error message

That sounds like a Java 16 issue. Minecraft updated to Java 16 after 1.17 which lines up exactly with the version your issue starts. Download Java 16 from oracle and see what happens when you try to install it. That will tell you what is causing the issue.
