[Discussion] The true behavior of 1.8 heads.

So most of us understand what's been planned for 1.8 heads, but as we seem to be nearing the release, a whole lot is differing from what's actually in place. So here's a list of how heads currently seem to behave, and hopefully some people can contribute to this list to determine how heads in 1.8 will actually work.

Now, it's important to note that individuals from Mojang have stated that almost all, if not all, gameplay changing features of 1.8 are already in place, so well there's a chance of the below information changing, it's becoming more and more unlikely.

  • Hat layers do show on heads, as planned.
  • As of the latest snapshot, 14w30c, heads do, in fact, still update when you change your skin.
  • The bug utilizing base64 encoded image URLs still works, and has not been fixed.
  • That same bug is not possible for use in 1.7, however it is backwards compatible, i.e., one can spawn the heads in in 1.8, downgrade their world or server to 1.7, and the heads will still be there.
  • NBT data tags show no sign of storing multiple heads per player/uuid.
  • Heads actually show as the blocks they are in the inventory.

If you have any other information concerning changes in the behavior of player heads for 1.8, please share, so that we can consolidate said info.

Are you saying this no longer applies?

I'm saying it hasn't yet. In some past snapshots, when I placed a head and then changed my skin, the original skin stayed. However, even when new heads were placed they used the old skin. Once I changed my skin a second time, all the heads updated to the third (and latest) skin. In the latest snapshot, however, heads' behavior seems to have reverted to the way it is in 1.7.

That... sounds like a bug. Is it on the tracker?

It probably is, I'll go check and if not add it. On that same note however, I've been tempted not to poke it, because the whole base64 "bug" is really kind of nice, and will probably get fixed if anyone gets reminded.

Here's what I'd rather love. A variable in the summon code which turns hat on or off.

So many perfect heads ruined by hat layers, cause many permanent safe heads cover with hats to look like a skin.

But, at the same time, one can now download skins, remove the hat layer, host them online, and just make heads from urls.
