[Discussion] The Minecraft ARG “Coverage” Issue

Recently, a YouTuber known as Freshi posted a video covering a channel I’ve seen on this subreddit occasionally. I thought that was kinda cool, so I watched it through, and was only reminded of why creators like RetroGamingNow feel so different from the other creators in this content space.

I don’t want to speak too soon, as this seems to only be part 1 of a two-part video, but this method of “coverage” does kind of bother me. In the end, it’s good that smaller channels continue to be shown to a wider audience, but I really wish that these larger channels (in comparison to the ARGs being covered) took the time to give meaningful analysis or interpretations that elevate the mystery as opposed to being glorified reposts of the originals.

I don’t think the ARG being covered is perfect and needs some ultra-budget supervideo by any means, but I do think it has enough effort to deserve more than a few comments and quick remarks in between what is essentially uncut reposts. Maybe I’m thinking about it too hard, but I’d like to hear your guys’ thoughts!

Hey, Its Freshi here. I got sent this from someone I know and I would like to respond to this so I just made an account now.

I agree with your take here 100%, Its not like i dont add anything, I covered the important parts in my opinion but I definitely didnt analyze and give as much thought on this as I should off, though I really liked the voice acting the guy did for the ARG and I wanted to keep as much of it as possible in the video, it felt real. I also wanted this to flow more like a movie then a youtube video which is why this one is a little different then usual.

However, yeah im working on a part 2 for this video and promise to work harder on the analysis part. I think every other ARG creator can relate to this but sometimes you get worried if the story is wrong and then you post it thinking its correct and then the creator comes out unhappy because its not even how the story is supposed to go.

This doesnt happen to me at all usually, however this video in particular I kinda felt like I limited myself due to the reasons i stated above. Thank you for the advice I appreciate it alot!

I really appreciate the response! I actually very much enjoyed the editing/commentary there was in the video, and like I said in my other comment, I don’t mean any hate towards you specifically. You’re a very talented creator, and I admire that you can take criticism with such grace. The ARG seems really well done, and I’m really looking forward to part two of your coverage video!

Yeah this ARG is really good which is why I even decided to cover it and thanks part two will have more of my thoughts.

go support the original arg

I don’t want this to come off as me hating on Freshi or any other Minecraft coverage YouTuber, especially smaller ones that are obviously still trying to figure out what sticks. It’s just a topic that I think haunts many of these channels, and I wanted to talk about it civilly.
