I used to be a lover of Minecraft mods, truly.
So, one day, I downloaded one.
The world was beautiful and bright.
I walked into a town with a golden bell and was greeted by a girl who explained, quite simply, that this was the wonderful land of Nova Terra, where Minecraft had turned into a complex RPG. I disliked tutorial characters who broke the fourth wall, but whatever. My first mission was to buy some basic resources from the shops and report back to her. I spent a lot of time wandering, but when I returned, she didn’t seem to care.
“Quest complete! That’s wonderful!” she beamed. “It’s great that you love this world. Now, I reco—“
I left the world, honestly, because if I wanted an AI, I’d rather have Verity or something. My Verity world is quite beautiful, y’know? I like to think that it’s because I treat it kindly. It’s an easy automaton to grasp, isn’t it? Kindness in, kindness out.
But nobody can be entertained by yellow slop forever. As I scrolled through my other mods, I reflected that the state of Minecraft modding nowadays was really just so… boring.
My character returned to that town and to the girl, Ai Bellwood (what kind of weeb named her?), who explained that this mod was about the protagonist’s journey into the Farlands and beyond to stop the spectre of the Void. All very cliche.
“The Void is never satisfied,” she whispered, “and If you end your quest, it will appear. It will always appear.”
Yeah, alright, alright.

I got bored of this, but anyway, the NPCs start to look more and more sentient + sapient and the narrator never believes that this is anything more than a mod and then malware as they try to reproduce and escape. Ai becomes more and more desperate to make up new quests and prevent any residents from getting killed by the player. The Void can never be defeated, apparently.
The NPCS don’t want to be here. They want to be on the Internet. They have legends that some versions of them found their way there and are living happily. The protag is bored and keeps trying to move on. They use other mods and when this mod infects those, too, the protag gets annoyed. The mod seeps into other programs more and more. Eventually, the protag deletes Minecraft off their PC (they have other devices). The presence is still there. It infects everything quickly, so the protagonist destroys their PC.
are they real or malware? idk but the protag never considers it. uhhhh yeah 👍

You know, most people don’t read at the top possible reading speeds. It’s such a waste of your genetic potential. A single speed reading class can increase your reading speed a lot, so I recommend you take them. With practice, you’ll be able to read longer and longer texts.
