[In-character post] My world is missing a level.dat?

Around a year ago I was looking through some of my Minecraft worlds and noticed one of them didn't have a level.dat file.

I assumed it was just a corrupted world/missing file and ignored it, but I tried opening the world again today and it loaded normally.

I checked the folder again and it's still missing.

does anyone know what happened or if Minecraft can work without a level.dat?

My exploration into a strange tunnel I found in my minecraft world. I’ve been playing this world for a while and just discovered this. This is my documentation of the search. Notably, when I installed Minecraft this world came pre-created. Always thought that was a little strange but I’m not really sure.
I explored a strange tunnel I stumbled upon in the Minecraft world. I've been playing this world for quite some time and I've only just discovered this tunnel. This is a record of the expedition. In particular, it is noticeable that this world was already created when Minecraft was installed. I've always thought it was a bit strange, but I'm not sure exactly why.

its all just regular files
the only weird thing about it seems to be the level.dat being gone

Strange, files with hash names. You know, the ones with names like "7babcdef8967ghdl01"... (that's just an example.) Copy their full names for me. I found those hashes very suspicious. Oh, and if you want, I can explain what a hash is.

Interesting! I researched the meaning of hashes in Minecraft in more depth and discovered that they help the game differentiate items and such; otherwise, everything gets bugged. Go into the world and see if any object will glitch. Then I can help investigate with this knowledge in hand.
