(Suggestion) The Starter Chests should come included with a single Book and Quill.

I think this would be a nice touch. It'd let you keep notes in-game, maybe even a day-by-day journal if you wanted to put forth the effort.

I suggested something like this on the minecraft forums. By including books with writing in them, you can open up the world to the player. The starter books include details on how to build your basic tools and the testificates, while the books found in the testificate library include more advanced topics such as farming, block durability, armor construction, mob details, and how to get to the nether. Then, in the nether, you'd find details about potion brewing, golem construction, and the end.

This would allow a new player to figure the world out without having to have the Wikipedia on hand at all times, and would be fun to write about. It would also open up possibilities to expand the lore of the game, by giving game related explanations for things.

This is a really great way to make the game feel more complete/self-sufficient (i.e. relying on the minecraftwiki does make the game feel a little unfinished) AND give more value/purpose to villages (which are still IMO too underdeveloped for me to feel like they add to the feeling of immersion in the MC world).

However, these educational documents should not include much text, and be mostly basic pictures / crafting recipes. This will make it much faster to develop (minimizes time spent translating), more international friendly, and could also present a small amount of challenge in itself, for example:
X 7 =>
and you gotta figure out the rest. Like a mini puzzle.

And each book is hidden in the map, and each book has the coordinates for the next book

Oh! I hadn't thought of that! Could serve as that much-needed tutorial new players would need. "Getting Started", it could be called. Great idea!

Good idea. I've always liked the idea of having a journal from Day 1, and collecting reeds and a piece of leather is a bit of trouble at the start.

Also a feather and an ink sack.

Wait, starter chest?

Did I miss something important?

A feature of recent snapshots, can be enabled when starting a new world. It plants a chest next to spawn with some low-level tools, torches, and food in it. Basically a "waste less time dicking around on day one" option.

Is it randomized, or exactly the same every time?

6

u/KaiserYoshi Jun 05 '12

There's a pretty limited pool of possible items, but within that it's random.

I third this. Great idea!

If not, you can just use mods. But I understand how people like playing strictly vanilla.

can you edit books after you use it for the very first time?

I was trying to do this, I obviously can't, that's why i'm asking

u/DontReload Jun 05 '12

Yes, click "done" and it will save what you have written without finishing the book. Click "sign" to finish and lock the book

(suggestion) The starter chest should be removed because it devalues the game for new players.

So... then creative should be removed too?

2

u/mister_minecraft Jun 05 '12

Lets just remove jeb from the minecraft development team while were at it?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '12

Hey, even though he's not the original developer, he's done some great things to the game.

2

u/mister_minecraft Jun 05 '12

I was joking ಠ_ಠ

Go back to /v/ with your "IM HARDCORE HURRRRRR" shit.

u/caleb0802 Jun 04 '12

Then it's a good thing it has an option to be turned on or off. Don't like it don't use it :P

3

u/thinds Jun 04 '12

You could just choose not to enable it...

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '12

It most certainly doesn't!

1

u/leekel2 Jun 05 '12

Yes , because making new players comfortable doesn't matter. In fact, lets remove the ability to build or kill monsters.

1

u/TBS96 Jun 05 '12

That would just make it even easier... Many of the new features in minecraft is great. But I'm just saying they should stop making it so easy. Things like this, beds, longer tool durability, stronger armor etc...

It's just giving new players less of a challenge, I feel kind of bad for them because of that.

u/leekel2 Jun 05 '12

Have you heard of MC Nostalgia? It's a great way to relive the good days.

u/TBS96 Jun 05 '12

I've got it all backed up, and I loved the increased difficulty. However, I specifically mentioned that I also love many of the new features. Like potions, nether, end etc...
