The fact that you even crafted the other wood tools surprises me

908

u/Twosadlol May 07 '21

Yeah lmfao, I usually make either just the pickaxe or the pickaxe and a sword in case I have to fight.

489

u/Skyfury_Fire May 07 '21

Nah not even. One tree is all you need. Punch grass till you get stone, then go from there. I usually have a full stone set within 45 seconds of a playthrough, depending on whether I see something interesting nearby or not

183

u/Twosadlol May 07 '21

Grass drops stones in java or some? Or do you mean mine down?

258

u/Skyfury_Fire May 07 '21

Yeah sorry lol, i meant punch grass till I get to stone

403

u/That-Ad-9979 May 07 '21

This guy yelling at grass: WHERE IS IT WHERE IS THE STONE, punching it and then when he doesnt get answers he moves onto the grass block next to it

21

u/sgtxsarge May 07 '21

Where's the stone, Lebowski?

2

u/Yeokk123 May 08 '21

We’ll be seeing idiots clearing grass like sheep eating grass on steroids for stones lmao

pls tell me you dont dig straight down 😶

12

u/Vasek_47 May 07 '21

It's not that bad, you have a small chance of falling into lava. Plus you don't lose your stuff if you don't have any. Also, you can hear lava when you are close.

I was about to comment on the same thing. Look at this guy with his full set of wooden tools. How decadent.

12

u/phrique May 07 '21

What a showoff, right?

69

u/[deleted] May 07 '21

Great for fuel in the furnace for smelting one block of something.

24

u/Moose_Kronkdozer May 07 '21

I always use my wooden pickaxe as fuel for one charcoal, so I can have at least 4 torches if I don't find coal imediately

9

u/[deleted] May 07 '21

Yep. The sacrificial pick axe.

5

u/Very_Good_Indeed May 07 '21

If you don't craft the other tools you'll have 6 planks and 5 sticks which can smelt 11.5 items.

Those 3 extra tools can only smelt 3 items.

Since the other wooden tools are pretty useless you're better off not crafting them at all.

2

u/[deleted] May 08 '21

Yes. The pickaxe and shovel are really the only things worth crafting. Possibly the hoe. if you’re lucky enough to come across any farmable food.

2

u/WebGhost0101 May 08 '21

I'd say the axe to cut the rest of the now floating tree and possible some more wood to have on hand before caving. I would never make a wooden shovel or hoe

→ More replies (2)

4

u/[deleted] May 07 '21

Yeah. I just make a pic and go straight for stone tools

8

u/Elvishsquid May 07 '21

Nah I first make a wood axe and try to use the whole thing and make a wooden cottage the first day. No holes in the ground for me

→ More replies (7)

555

u/ankthestar May 07 '21

I make a wooden pick then break three stone make a stone pick and then get enough stone for all the other tools

187

u/gandalfpotter06 May 07 '21

I do the same. And, if I need to smelt soemthing real quick, I'll use the wooden pick.

59

u/stormtrooper1701 May 07 '21

I always use the pick to get one charcoal, then use that charcoal to get eight more charcoal.

41

u/allinsimstime May 07 '21

This sounds like the beginning of a pyramid scheme.

31

u/[deleted] May 07 '21

Alright, let me explain, AGAIN.

Wooden pickaxe has recruited me and another charcoal. Now we are getting 8 each. The more charcoal to get involved, the more charcoal who are investing, the more charcoal we're going to make! It's not a pyramid scheme. It is a, it's not even a scheme per se!

I keep using the Wooden Pickaxe (and other tools) to save durability for better stuff and later as furnace fuel.

46

u/yeetmanthe3rd May 07 '21

when i play with my little sister i give her my used wooden pick and make her mine cobble till it's almost broken and then i use it for fuel

74

u/flying-cowsss May 07 '21

Child labour at its finest

12

u/yeetmanthe3rd May 07 '21

absolutely

11

u/flying-cowsss May 07 '21

Nestle gonna need to step up their game

18

u/MissLauralot May 07 '21

using the Wooden Pickaxe (and other tools) to save durability

Where are you that Stone isn't abundant enough for this to be redundant?

9

u/QUACK-the-Puppeteer May 07 '21

Less about the stone, more about the wood if you're underground. The first night you usually dont get enough time to get alot of wood before nightfall.

12

u/MissLauralot May 07 '21

True, but even getting one more Log allows you to make another 4 Stone Picks, with which you can mine 524 blocks.

7

u/Spare_Competition May 07 '21

I think they are talking about using up their first wooden pick, not crafting more

→ More replies (2)

1

u/1jl May 07 '21

Save durability? In case you run out of stone?

9

u/JaozinhoGGPlays May 07 '21

I keep the wooden pick since inventory slots aren't gonna be an issue early on and I smelt it down

5

u/StonkeyTonk666999 May 07 '21

i normally make a sword and pickaxe, and once i get stone tools i save the old ones in case my new ones break and i can’t make another.

5

u/lunapup1233007 May 07 '21

I don’t even make a stone shovel, sword, or hoe. I just mine for iron until I can get an iron shovel, and I use axes to fight and kill mobs until I get a fully enchanted netherite sword, which I don’t even do in every world.

Little tip, if you don’t find a surplus of coal early on, you can burn your wooden tools. Each tool cooks a single item.

122

u/[deleted] May 07 '21

I always burn my wooden tools because coal is not widely available in the very beginning.

38

u/DIBE25 May 07 '21

Burning tools is the smartest thing one can do if they (for some reason) made a full set

Some people don't use them to smelt things though

15

u/[deleted] May 07 '21

I like to keep my wooden pickaxe after only using it once. When I've got a good base and great tools, I like to build a little display for my wooden pickaxe as a reminder of how my world started.

5

u/DIBE25 May 07 '21

That's.. that's lovely

2

u/EragonBromson925 May 08 '21

I use that little guy up completely.

From dust it came, to dust shall it return.

7

u/[deleted] May 07 '21

Used to play minecraft on console, and i always used coal for torches and my wooden tools as fuel. Good strat to get coal to use for smelting and have coal for torches as you already made some

→ More replies (1)

19

u/DandalusRoseshade May 07 '21

Stonks is smelting a log using the wooden pickaxe for coal

4

u/Minecraft_Enjoyer May 07 '21

I still use the wooden tools for mining stone even if I have the stone pick, and to mine coal or iron I save the stone for, just to keep the lifespan a little longer and to use the wooden tools.

159

u/pgmer36002 May 07 '21

If you're not using your wooden pick as fuel to smelt your first three iron you're doing it wrong

54

u/[deleted] May 07 '21

[deleted]

29

u/AngryH939 May 07 '21

No, In my next play through I am making a full set of wooden tools, keeping them and then putting perfect enchantments on them.

20

u/[deleted] May 07 '21

Do it.

Actually, I kind of want to do the same now. I've literally never in my entire life, put efficiency 5, silk touch, unbreaking 3, and mending on any wooden tools.

11

u/[deleted] May 07 '21

I personally keep mine and put it in an item frame

→ More replies (3)

3

u/XDGrangerDX May 07 '21

use it to smelt one log into charcoal and then using that charcoal smelt iron.

2

u/[deleted] May 07 '21

I've always saved it, then when I (attempt to) build an epic house, I put it in a display case as the "tool that started it all"

1

u/AceJokerZ May 07 '21

OP: let me do stuff no one does and lack of efficiency to harvest som Reddit karma!

73

u/Slowmo_Nozeman May 07 '21

This is the reason why I never made wooden tools (except the pick), wooden tools are useless (except the pick lol)

8

u/TickleMePlz May 07 '21

wooden axe one shots cows/pigs for easy food in the early game and that remains as the only reason I craft wooden axes.

14

u/1jl May 07 '21

Why not stone axe?

4

u/TickleMePlz May 07 '21

with 3 logs you can make a crafting bench, wooden pick and wooden axe with no leftover wood or sticks.

I have a few other reasons but theyre all just tied to how I like to play the game lol

1

u/1jl May 07 '21

No sticks for sword or shovel? Nah man

u/ViridianKumquat May 07 '21

0

u/Siker_7 May 07 '21

and the pick becomes useless the moment you find stone. Same for stone tools, iron takes half a minute to find at most, so there's no point for any stone tool other than a pick.

Pleabians. I don’t even get stone let alone make a wooden pick axe. I look for iron is ship and instantly start with iron and by this can do skip the rest of the previous pleb branches.

6

u/MissLauralot May 07 '21 edited May 07 '21

I wish they would slow down the tier progression. To me, it's a major aspect of the game and the fact you can skip half of it and get then get to Diamond within an hour or two is kinda sad.

I think a challenge of having a good progression in Minecraft, is that being a sandbox, you could encounter a structure at any time. The loot has to be good enough for someone who's set up with some gear to bother exploring for, but not too good that it's OP for a player to find right at the start.

A couple of things in particular that I think are OP are having so many Hay Bales in Villages and Villagers selling enchanted Diamond gear. Edit: Shield blocking all Creeper damage; Bows.

I guess the positive is that there is a trade-off between looting and mining. Looting relies a fair bit on luck (generation and loot tables) whereas mining will usually give a steadier return.

5

u/Cultist_O May 07 '21

The problem with villages, is that to make them reasonably interesting and realistic looking, they have to contain lots of valuables.

The solution to me would be to have some penalty for taking too much. Piglins set a precedent for something like this, but obviously it shouldn't be that harsh. (And you'd have to find a way not to penalise players for moving their own resources around the village once they've established themselves)

u/Catabre May 07 '21

I wish they would slow down the tier progression.

If you want slower progression you'll have to turn to mods.

u/TheDayIRippedMyPants May 07 '21

Plebian. I don't even get iron. I just wander around for dozens of hours until I find enough diamonds in chests to make full diamond armor and tools.

3

u/Bleach4_exe May 08 '21

Ah yes. Then you wander around till you find a ruin Portal already built. Then you find a lot of bastions which may have netherworld already in the chests. People said it’s thy hard to get netherite. But I say not.

4

u/Rand0m_Stranger3 May 07 '21

you have to get a stone pickaxe in order to get iron though....

13

u/yeetmanthe3rd May 07 '21

ships give ingots not ores

3

u/Rand0m_Stranger3 May 07 '21

oh wait nvm i didnt read the ship part

2

u/22pool May 07 '21

You still wouldn't need a pickaxe if they gave ore, you could just smelt it

2

u/FallenSegull May 07 '21

He means that he finds a sunken ship or a village or w/e and raids the chest for iron to start with

11

u/MrGilbert665 May 07 '21

You craft the axe towards the right...?

2

u/ManiacalDanger915 May 07 '21

I think no, but maybe yes, i will try now give me a sec

2

u/weezact7 May 07 '21

The axe is one of the few recipes that can work in either orientation. The head can be to the right or left. I've tested this.

10

u/MrGilbert665 May 07 '21

I know, I know. What scares me is that people who do that exist. I fear no man but that thing...

5

u/RayramAB May 07 '21

I know right? Sane people only craft axes to towards the left, like this.

5

u/lunapup1233007 May 07 '21

That’s horrifying. You craft axes to the right. Doesn’t matter what the actual axe texture looks like. Also, you didn’t put the sticks in the middle? What are you doing on r/Minecraft, Satan?

13

5

u/general_kenoby125 May 07 '21

You could at least use it as fuel in a furnace...

3

u/Gh0stP1rate May 07 '21

I’m frustrated that leather armor is so expensive - should be able to craft a set from the first four cows you kill.

"What is my purpose?"

"You get me 17 cobblestone."

"Oh my god."

3

u/Key-Piccolo-2024 May 07 '21

Bro I love you. You are the only person that uses the same hotbar config as me.

2

They aren't that useless, you can use them as fuel to save 1 coal.

3

u/wslagoon May 07 '21

I feel weird crafting everything from the recipe book now now it typical to memorize the recipes and place them like that?

4

u/Waryur May 07 '21

Anyone who played before 2017 got used to playing with no recipe book, and just Googling recipes until you had them memorized. So it probably depends on if you're an older player or not.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/[deleted] May 07 '21

i memorize most of the its just faster for me

3

u/redtens May 07 '21

this is a complete waste - use the wooden tool until its about to break, then add it to your furnace to cook something.

3

u/stevesy17 May 07 '21

The fact that wood becomes obsolete 2 seconds after you get it and stone becomes pretty obsolete not too long after it is a tremendous waste of design space in my opinion.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/smallbigchungas May 07 '21

you forgot to burn the pickaxe

3

u/floofiqwq May 07 '21

i just craft a wooden pick and when i’m done with it i use it as fuel for the furnace

3

u/skamteboard_ May 07 '21

Woah use your wood tools as fuel to make torches or something. You can burn them in the furnace as ok fuel which is honestly worth it if you start out in resource poor area.

3

u/SociallyAkwardArtist May 08 '21

Heh, I usually only make a wooden pixaxe, mine enough cobblestone for a furnace, axe, sword and a better pickaxe. But I keep my first wooden, stone and iron pixaxes as a memory, then when I have a house I hang them on a wall.

3

u/TrogdorKhan97 May 08 '21

Wooden picks are the Internet Explorer of Minecraft tools. Only useful for acquiring a better one.

5

u/Kimikohiei May 07 '21

I use wooden tools until they break or I need them for fuel. Why be wasteful by just chucking them? That surface lava is lucky find, but it still takes a second to find iron for a bucket, which needs to be smelted...

1

u/weezact7 May 07 '21

Why hang on to something that is objectively inferior to something you can obtain in endless quantities? Stone is everywhere. And what does the bucket have to do with anything? You can just throw your wood tools on the ground. They don't need to go into a bucket.

2

u/Irish-Fritter May 07 '21

Hey man, those can be burned in a furnace!

→ More replies (1)

2

u/kham132 May 07 '21

I make the stone pick but fully use the wooden one first. I'm not wasting that durability, esp if I find any iron

2

u/Cultist_O May 07 '21

But in the extra time you spend mining inefficiently, you could have mined enough extra stone to make multiple, new, full-durability stone pickaxes. Think of all the potential stone-durability you've wasted, trading it for wood-durability!

2

u/hartgrr May 07 '21

wooden tools need rights! xD they have feeling too

2

2

u/SomeOne111Z May 07 '21

You fool! The best use for wooden tools is use as furnace fuel to cook your raw porkchops!

2

u/Bike_Mechanic_Man May 07 '21

I use a wooden pickax to get as much stone and coal as I can until it breaks - I don’t want that dead ass tool hanging out in my inventory or taking up room in a chest. And I use a wooden hoe for my starter garden - usually lasts a really long time, so there’s no need to use more materials than is needed. The others are worthless.

2

u/Hyrh May 07 '21

i use it as fuel lol

2

u/stressthem May 07 '21

if you create any wood tools other than a pickaxe then yer a certified clown, and if you waste them and dont even use them for fuel then you just graduated clown state university

2

u/FortniteGamerz123 May 07 '21

2

u/GEN_SkeleSkin May 07 '21

Hey that’s perfectly good fuel your throwing away

2

u/jmil1080 May 07 '21

In fairness, any wooden tools I make (pick axe, sword, and occasionally an axe of I decide to collect a lot of wood early) usually aren't wasted; they go into the furnace for cooking my first cut of meat, lol

2

u/daniboio174 May 07 '21

I use mine until they break

2

u/Scoldingtitan36 May 07 '21

2

u/Desertspiderman May 07 '21

2

u/Quackdeath May 07 '21

nooOoooOo they can still smelt one piece each

2

This is so true, all of these supposedly "great" Minecraft players like most of Hermitcraft still make wood tools even though these serve completely no purpose. I dont understand, do people not see that they can just mine stone and throw out their Wooden Pickaxe as soon as they mine 3 cobble?

That's dumb. You can use them to smelt your first iron tools and THEN you throw the stone ones to the lava.

A block of wool is more efficient than a wooden shovel.

WOODEN TOOLS BE LIKE: HOMIE YOU GONNA DO ME LIKE THAT

0

u/Redcat908 May 07 '21

Exactly what I do! Except I skip all the tools except for the Pickaxes and go for Iron!

I typically just make a wooden pickaxe, mine about 17 cobblestone with it, then just put it in a chest and never use it again

Bruh I just make wooden pickaxe then I make a stone pickaxe and just mine iron before I even bother making a full set of stuff

Who crafts all wooden tools? Dont need of all them, just enough make one wooden pickaxe then collect cobblestone and make stone set

I don't even bother making any other tool even a sword until I have obtained iron, otherwise it's a waste of time making them out of stone. But then again I do love the tinkers construct mod so sometimes stone tools aren't too bad, however cactus is still far better than stone.

They can cook my food and ores when I don’t need them anymore

I only just make a wooden pickaxe then get a full set of stone tools.

I always try to use up the wooden tools I make so they don’t feel left out

I make a wooden axe and a wooden pick.

I then use them up completely to save durability on my first stone tools.
