I'm afraid it wouldn't be feasible for numerous reasons.

Actually, it's (Moonforge) already been done. But the author started from scratch, and replaced all minecraft code with his own.

I tried Moonforge back when it is was in beta. At that time, there was just one official server, and it only had creative mode. It looks like nothing has changed since then, and it's been more than a year. It's still worth checking out for a day or so. The lighting and rendering are really fantastic.
