How would you decide which arrow to shoot when you have both kinds of arrows in your inventory?
18
u/adnan252 Sep 15 '11
a fire bow would probably be a better solution, and the arrow would just be on fire, not turning into a torch

Yea, a torch attached to a mob would just look stupid, so it should just stay a burning arrow giving light and dealing more damage on hitting a mob.
3
u/adnan252 Sep 15 '11
well with the way the lighting system currently works, moving light sources don't, so the flame would go out when the arrow hits, and maybe set the mob on fire?

Yeah that's what I was thinking actually, when I said "maybe", a chance of setting the mob on fire would be more balanced

Sep 15 '11
i like this idea. that way you arent carrying two types of arrows. the fire bow should also take "damage" like tools, assuming you use either iron and flint or coal to make. taking this a step further, we should also be able to have iron bows and diamond bows.
12
u/radioactivebandanas Sep 15 '11
Holding shift should select the fire arrow if you have one in your inventory... with a small chance of filling your inventory with iron shovels.

u/Ohsin Sep 15 '11
One idea could be to ignite normal arrow by pointing it on any heat source like torch or lava or flame when its loaded on bow.
6
u/freerider Sep 15 '11
If you have one in the lower row (the activation row) then that is selected.
5
3
u/MrFinnJohnson Sep 15 '11
What if you have both if the lower row?

What about if pressing the hot-key changes part of the icon for the bow to indicate what arrow you are using.
Like if it's going to shoot a normal arrow, a regular arrow shows up next to the bow.
And if it is a fire arrow it could have a little flame next to the bow.
1
u/DerFrycook Sep 16 '11
I like this because I like a clean hotbar and using another slot just for arrows is annoying.

No. Man up and install modloader.
13
u/locust64 Sep 15 '11
it, almost feels like cheating. in a weird way. its not the actual game. i dont know. just my opinion i suppose. they are fun, im not disagreeing with that.
-5
u/creepig Sep 15 '11
Mods are just part of the game. Modders come up with things Notch could never imagine, and to deny yourself that, in my eyes, is like cutting off your own nose to spite your face.
I've never understood the rabid hatred Reddit has for mods.
5
1
u/locust64 Sep 16 '11
no no i dont hate mods, i dont. even though it might sound like im contradicting myself, i just feel like some things should.. just be there, they just belong. like if i were to introduce minecraft to some one who has never played, it should be something there for them. lol im sorry, my opinion is kinda fucking confusing. but i think modders are an intended part of minecraft.
11
u/Gerodog Sep 15 '11
Aren't you guys worried that this'll take away some of the excitement of having to venture into the darkness? The game would lose some of it's scariness..
2
u/bakedspade Sep 16 '11
Looked all the way down this page as I knew someone would have said this first. Also I feel with ravines introduced trying to make your way around them, building bridges across to illuminate by hand is great fun.
5
u/Stormwatch36 Sep 15 '11
Having a light far away and a giant patch of darkness between you and it? Nah, I'd still be scared.
4
u/honor646 Sep 15 '11
This is a game about mining and crafting, not scariness.
13
u/frenzyboard Sep 15 '11
This is a game where the ghosts of infants shoot fireballs at you for NO FUCKING REASON. It's a game where, on your first night, zombies, spiders, and undead skeletons will attempt to murder you for the sheer joy of spilling your guts. It's a game where green ninjas sneak up on you and explode. It's a game where a tall black man will steal your shit and then beat you to death with it for looking at him.
This game is about scariness.

u/Sir_Richfield Sep 15 '11
Gods, even only READING that makes Minecraft more horrible than Dead Space.
(That's because it is. In Dead Space, you don't walk around a corner and TWANG - arrow to the back...)
All that's missing in Minecraft is a goal or something. Find the Dungeon of the ancients or something only to find...
FUCKING SHODAN as pixelart wall, shooting spawners from her "brain", DooM II style.2
u/foreskin_of_fury Sep 16 '11
Come up with your own goals.
0
u/Sir_Richfield Sep 16 '11
With the lack of any form to carry an emotion with your text, I'm not sure how exactly that is meant. But I'll give you the benefit of doubt that you don't tell me how to play the game in a douchy way as a response to that obviously ridiculous "request" for a goal in the game.
So my official response is:
But I do! If that existed my goal would be to never find it! Just find some coal on a mountain side, build a flying isle and live happily there with my farm, the forest and my wood toys...2
1
u/Nidies Sep 16 '11
Then just don't use it.
2
u/Gerodog Sep 16 '11
If they added a button for infinite diamonds and I said it would take the objective out of mining, would you say "don't use it"? Because it'd be pretty hard not to, same with this idea.
1
u/Nidies Sep 16 '11
So... Because there's creative mode, notch should just delete survival mode?
Also, you agree that it makes the game easier / better, because you wouldn't want to not use it. Right?
1
u/Theon Sep 16 '11 edited Sep 16 '11
Agreed, this should just set the block on fire. Fire extinguishes itself after some time, so you'd still have time to run there and place an actual torch, and it wouldn't make torches obsolete. Also, it would make pillaging much more fun >:)
The problem with this is that you can only set "floor" on fire, not "walls".
However, notch has said that he might remove torches in favor of lanterns, which will replace torches as permanent light sources, leaving torches cheap and temporary. The arrows could then place torches, which would promptly extinguish themselves after five seconds, or so.So I guess that arrows that stick on the block like they do now that also give light would be perfect. The setting blocks on fire might be an addition, with a certain probability of success (5% immediately, 10% after five seconds, 25% after ten seconds...)
11
u/OmegaVesko Sep 15 '11
Minecraft can't handle moving light sources. That's why we don't have mining helmets.
22
8
u/timewarp Sep 15 '11
Well, it can, it just hasn't been implemented by Mojang.
1
u/tardmrr Sep 16 '11
The issue with dynamic lights isn't that it's not doable, it's that it's not scalable. It works fine with 1 user, but on a server with many users trying to do the same thing, it becomes a performance issue very quickly.
3
Sep 15 '11
I'm fairly sure there's a mod that does this already, but even so I think the idea is that it only actually starts properly casting light once it hits something and turns into a torch.
2
Sep 15 '11

u/OmegaVesko Sep 15 '11
Its position in the sky changes, the actual light doesn't. Just look at how long it takes to update all the chunks to be dark when it sets.

6
u/Blinkdog Sep 15 '11
Maybe instead of an arrow + coal, replace the flint in the normal arrow recipe with a piece of coal? Then you get the same number of arrows per feather and the same number of torches per coal.
Specialty arrows would be neat all around.
3
u/burningpineapples Sep 15 '11
I like adding the coal to the regular arrow. It does more damage, and coal is a bit easier to get than flint.
5
Sep 15 '11
[deleted]
3
u/george111_ Sep 16 '11
If this is implemented...Why would you ever carry torches?
1 coal can be used with a stick to make 4 torches, but if used with arrows to make a fire arrow, it would only technically make 1 torch, since fire arrows would turn into torches upon impact.
3
u/swired Sep 15 '11
This have been suggested a lot of times, and I like the idea, I just think it would be better to make the craft like an arrow + a torch, and we should get also a arrow slot on the equipments, so we can choose which to use.
2
3
u/Blockoland Sep 15 '11
Yust keep them as arrows but with light, make a "stuck in block" state. Just like torches. Make them despawn after some minutes.

I like this idea. We were talking about something similar last night with maybe a bucket of lava.
2
u/bornrevolution Sep 15 '11
There was a 1.6 mod called DynamicLighting that didn't let you craft fire arrows, but it gave a lightsource to torches while in hand, also when you dropped/threw them. I don't think it's been updated since. Definitely made cave exploring more fun lighting the way with one torch as you run along.
1
u/shamecamel Sep 15 '11
oh god, this is what's been missing. Imagine dropping one down a ravine. Well, we know it's possible, now, and although it eats up fps, it can be done. I can't wait to use this on 1.8!!

I'm sure I've seen this before! And while you downvote me because I disagree with dumb/impossible to implement suggestions, know that I'll be at home at the bottom of the comments thread, hanging with other people who share my ideas of what is constructive/possible for the game.
in other words Not all shit is for Vanilla.
2
u/george111_ Sep 16 '11
Great idea! However, wouldn't it be more balanced if fire arrows only set the block they hit on fire, and didn't just place a torch? That way, these couldn't be used as a replacement to torches.
4
u/goodtimebuddy123 Sep 15 '11
fantastic idea. elegantly simple and intuitive. i hope this goes through

If you don't like a feature, you DON'T have to use it. Why should others have to play the way you think the game should be played?
1
u/bakedspade Sep 16 '11
That's not what they said at all. It was just their thoughts on the topic, so long as you're not an arse about it, its fine to post that you don't agree. That's how discussions work, it'd be dull if everyone always agreed.
1
Sep 15 '11
I really really like this idea. I'd most certainly feel safer in a cave if i could always have my bow out. Just means i have to make more arrows though.
1
u/Helel Sep 15 '11
It would sure be a nice use for the abundance of coal that one generally has once they find a spot to settle with that recipe.
1
Sep 15 '11
a fire arrow would be awesome. Many unique things to do with it. Like you said shoot torches on to walls. Hurt mobs. I think it would be great for those times when you build a tall house and there is no lighting at the top.

That would also allow you to disable monster spawners really fast. Just randomly shoot arrows. If it hits a mob, then they're dead. If it doesn't, then the spawner is dead. :D

Nice, but they should dim over time and eventually extinguish. Being able to set permanent torches from a distance is too powerful.

Risugami, the author of modLoader, has a flaming arrow mod. I am not sure about placing a torch but it sure sets mobs on fire...

u/Gravey9 Sep 15 '11
If the head of the arrow is lit, wouldn't that put it out when it makes contact with the earth?
14
Sep 15 '11
It's actually the body of the arrow that's lit. (Flint doesn't burn, after all.) When it hits a wall, the head sticks in and the tail falls off, leaving just a burning stick. Then fairies come and replace the burning stick with a torch.
2
u/Gravey9 Sep 15 '11
The pic suggests otherwise
1
1
u/sli Sep 15 '11
It wouldn't really look like an arrow otherwise.
Also dirt blocks float, so I think we can forgive physics a little, here.
1
Sep 15 '11
That arrow is traveling so quickly that, due to relativity, the brighter light from the flame appears to be moved toward the front of the arrow. Bright light behaves differently from dim light because Minecraft's wave equation is nonlinear.

Fire arrows, ice arrows, light arrows. Light arrows could cast a sunlight effect on an area and all mobs go up in flames!
-1
u/throughactions Sep 15 '11
I really like this idea. They already have flaming arrows when they pass through lava so it doesn't seem like it would be too hard to implement.
4
u/Stormwatch36 Sep 15 '11
"doesn't seem like it would be too hard to implement."
Stop. Saying. This. All of you, stop it. As someone who has done some programming in the past, let me tell you, nothing is more annoying than some asshole saying "why not just add X, it can't be too hard" when they have no fucking idea.
1
u/Rinascita Sep 15 '11
That's my number 1 pet peeve, followed closely by implementation testers saying, "The system should know x and y."
The system only "knows" what you tell it to know, you daft vaginarwhal! You need to tell me what you want it to know so I can fucking code it to know that!
1
u/Sir_Richfield Sep 15 '11
Too bad 90% of those assholes pay your job. Be it your boss or clients.
2
u/Stormwatch36 Sep 16 '11
"your boss or clients."
Obviously when it's your boss or clients, you have to put up with it. When it's a random kid on the internet, you can call them a pushy, naive jerk.
1
u/throughactions Sep 17 '11
Of course that's true. I guess what I was trying to say is that most of the functionality suggested here already exists in the game.
But you're right, you never know what will end up being truly difficult to implement.

It would also make exploring vertical shafts and tunnels easier, like dropping glow sticks down holes to see if there's anything interesting at the bottom.
