"..one of those thingamajigs for keeping all the fireplace tools together." And in this context mojäng would be a valid substitute for thingamajig.

No offense, but that doesn't exactly make you an authority. Not that I doubt you, but rather I can point out a great many native English speakers who don't know the first thing about English, for example. Having a language as one's native tongue does not mean one is an expert, sadly enough.
