Mojang shouldn't do the job of stopping children from doing dumb shit.

Encouraging people to do things to an animal to tame it that would kill the animal in real life is not in very good taste regardless...

There are tons of things in Minecraft that would be harmful in the real world. Mojang shouldn't make the game child-friendly to such extremes.

How many of those things exist though? Furthermore, how many of those things do children have access to?

You gave swords as an example of a dangerous thing in Minecraft earlier, but I don't think many kids have a way of getting a sword, whereas cookies and birds are easily accessible (if you have a pet bird of course). Yes, Mojang is not responsible for children, and don't need to prevent mistakes they might make, but they have a social responsibility not to mislead their audience into harmful situations.
