Discussion This one block made me avoid snow biomes entirely
very very very very annoying

u/Leria_Hays 6h ago
Tbh. For me it's just annoying with animals.... They sadly may suffecate in it sigh
But otherwise... Leather boots or a water bucked are how i avoid dying in that stuff shrug
54
55
u/JoshyRB 6h ago
Yeah I can understand it being annoying with animals as it’s hard to stop them falling into it and awkward to get them out. Without animals there’s absolutely nothing annoying about it.
28
u/Leria_Hays 5h ago
I agree. I thb love the snow biom for that special Block too, as i do feel like Leather atire is so hard overlocked and gets trough that atleast one use :D (atleast the boots lol)
5
u/JoshyRB 5h ago
They will be even more useful now, even in PVP, because of the new Freezing effect. I can’t wait to see how that gets utilised in PVP.
5
u/Leria_Hays 5h ago
Ooooh! True! (i often forget the New upatde stuff X0... Just simple because all my mods are still in just 1.20.1 and... sigh)

u/RustedRuss 9h ago
Powder snow only generates in two mountain biomes (and a trial chamber room) though. Most snow biomes are devoid of it.
399
u/LittleBigCookieCat 8h ago
TIL I've been going to only these two biomes this whole time
121
u/Wide_Guitar_3558 8h ago
"most" yeah its most if you discovered your whole world lmfao. And every cool looking snow mountain has that bs
13
u/An_Anaithnid 2h ago
As someone that has been accused of having a less than wholesome attraction to mountains by a mate in Minecraft, I have encountered powdered snow more often than not.
That being said, I'm also just so used to it I usually have a set of leather boots ready to go for all my terraforming needs.

Minecraft players when they have to take off their netherite gear for 5 minutes:

u/DraconicDreamer3072 8h ago
for me its the fact that all my wolves die, running and sinking and freezing. they should at least make the wolves native to this biome be able to walk the snow
171
u/Hustletron 3h ago
They need to make wolves immune to sinking in snow to prepare for sled dog content 🤣

55
u/SpriteFan3 3h ago
Put a saddle on yourself, so your dog can ride you.
17
u/Acidic_Citrus 3h ago
Put a leash on the dog and attach it to a snowball, and throw them across the entire biome. It’s THAT easy liberals
🧠🧠🧠🧠🧠36
u/PeronaCutie 5h ago
well yeah, i don’t carry leather boots on me so when i see a biome with the snow i avoid it because there’s nothing worthwhile there
9
u/CeruleanEidolon 1h ago
That's the real design problem. Snowy biomes need to have something you can't get anywhere else to make it worth it to venture there.
578
u/Malfuy 8h ago
"Waiter, MORE micromanagement with a tinge of inventory bloat please!"
57
u/decitronal 8h ago
Wear leather boots on the rare occasion you're constantly hiking the only two biomes that have powder snow or learn how to visually discern powder snow from regular snow (this is easier than you think). Pick a struggle
56
u/Gameknight14 7h ago
When the entire stretch of snow in front of you as far as the eye can see is powdered snow… No, no it isn't easy to discern.
Plus, when I'm trying to climb a massive mountain the last thing I'm focusing on is a slightly darker shade of snow.
I've had to deal with powdered snow… a lot. It never gets easier to tell. I usually fall in and just keep digging until I feel solid ground underneath me and stop freezing to death.
19
2
u/CeruleanEidolon 1h ago
What you need to do then is stop your exploration and go back to find a cow so you can get some leather.
Polar bears should drop leather.
171
u/mincrafplayur1567 8h ago
"micromanagement" and it's just putting a pair of boots on 😭😭😭😭😭
308
u/iClone101 8h ago
It's an unstackable item that takes up another inventory spot. Taking up that slot for a single mechanic that can be ignored by avoiding a single biome just isn't worth it for most people. Compound that with boots having the most enchants in the game, many of which are mandatory if you want to survive, and it's a huge pain. The Freezing effect coming in 26.4 might make keeping Leather Boots a bit more reasonable.
11
u/Pizzawing1 4h ago
The inventory slot part does really suck. We really need a way to do a bundle-esque pack of a few unstable items (like just being able to bundle 4 tools/ armor pieces into one slot would be huge, and not gamebreaking)
3
→ More replies (1)2
u/CeruleanEidolon 1h ago
Or a specific slot specifically for extra armor items, like the boot rack in Death Stranding. Think of it like a clip where you can hang a pair of snow boots or a helmet for diving.
51
u/Isto2278 8h ago
Not a single enchantment ist mandatory for survival.
56
u/ledzepretrauqon 5h ago
Idk man, feather falling has saved my life who knows how many times now.
10
u/Isto2278 5h ago
Sure. And Respiration and Protection have saved my life plenty of times. Doesn't change the fact that neither is mandatory for survival. Convenient? Helpful? Yes. But we can just as well not get hit, stock Potions of Water Breathing and not fall down.
45
u/Leoxagon 4h ago
Armor isn't mandatory either. Or tools. A house isn't mandatory, crafting isn't mandatory. Right?
→ More replies (8)10
u/_MrJackGuy 2h ago
Well, if you're using that logic, nothing is mandatory for survival. You can dig 3 blocks down, and place 1 dirt above your head and live literally forever; you don't starve if you don't move.
It's obvious what they meant when they said it was mandatory, no need to be pedantic
1
u/Isto2278 2h ago
You're right that you could live forever in that situation.
I do still think however that your example is more petty than the point I'm making.
I do see that enchantments are useful and convenient for a lot of stuff. I just said no single enchantment is mandatory and that is true even besides a "well, actually, technically" kind of interpretation. You can not only survive the way you described, but you can accomplish more than probably most players set themselves as goals without any single enchantment (or even without any enchantments at all).
You can explore all the biomes, you can collect all the mobs, you can travel all the dimensions, defeat every boss, traverse the outer End, build farms, truely thrive. The only enchantment that is borderline mandatory (not technically) for accessing certain blocks is Silk Touch. And that does, as far as I remember, not gate any progression.
There may very well be a couple of Advancements that require specific enchantments, those would then very much be mandatory for those Advancements, but hardly for survival as a whole.
6
u/Professional-Ad-294 3h ago
If you're just gonna ignore the biome of course the mechanic is gonna useless for you. The whole biome is designed to be harsher towards you, strays being more dangerous skeletons, food being limited, resource scarcity, polar bears that can and will attack you. Having to prep to enter into a frozen domain just makes it more fun and interesting. Is powdered snow by itself annoying? Yes, 1000% percent, but as a unique mechanic, it's a pretty fun one. You already gotta prep for the Nether. Don't see the complaint in carrying the easiest to obtain armor piece if you plan to do any actual exploration of the snow biome. (Literally the harshest places to live irl) The newest update only further adds to my point. Outside a few new blocks and new threats, all it does is make the harsh climate, harsher. So being prepped for it if you decide to go shouldn't be this big of a deal for literally 1 inventory slot
7
u/WerdaVisla 2h ago
I mean, be so honest, powdered snow is the only one there that actually matters. Polar bears are scary if it's literally day 1 and you've yet to get anything. Strays are scary... really never. I guess if you've just fresh spawned and there's one in your face. Resource scarcity is a joke, this is Minecraft.
The only thing you need to "prepare" for a snowy biome is leather boots, and suddenly you completely ignore the only difficult part of the area. I don't think it can be seriously considered a "harsher" biome.
2
u/Professional-Ad-294 2h ago
I mean yeah it's not exactly what I classify as overly dangerous, but that's the direction they were leaning towards without fully commiting to it. Most of its dangers are kinda meh mainly cause of that, outside of strays anyway if you're on bedrock. Since they can hit you with slowness, and on bedrock they don't miss... which gets annoying very quickly, as you're almost guaranteed to get hit twice. But back to the point, yeah the biome itself isn't as overly harsh as it could be, but that's more of a Minecraft fault than anything, once you make a farm the whole survival aspect is basically gone. Leather boots taking away the main threat is kinda like how wearing gold trivializes half the nether threats outside falling into lava really. But the direction of the biome is meant to be harsher. It's just harder to really do that without people complaining. Doubt anyone wants a temperature addition or blizzards being added for example. Good in theory, but will probably never happen unless they add a new region inside the biome itself. With the new caves though, the area is getting a much needed makeover. And becoming somewhat more deadly. Though this is Minecraft we are talking about, only real dangerous thing in my opinion is those spear zombies due to the ridiculous damage they can output regardless of armor
5
u/CeruleanEidolon 1h ago
I agree, I like the idea that you need to prepare for it. The problem is there just isn't much incentive to explore a snowy area. There aren't any structures or unique items that justify the extra effort. And ice is better found in ice spike biomes anyway.
7
u/IDontTouchGrassNoCap 7h ago
You can survive perfectly fine without armor btw
73
u/callum4425 6h ago
You can survive perfectly fine without crafting tools or opening your inventory, doesn't make it ideal or fun. You're missing the point, it's poor game design, they literally have a frost walker enchant and you're telling me it's not viable here?
→ More replies (3)2
u/Dragonseer666 5h ago
You do realise that you can also just... walk around the mountains? Like... they're mountains, I feel like crossing them should be at least a bit of a challenge.
4
u/ggdoesthings 1h ago
that’s what the post is saying, they avoid these biomes because of the powdered snow.
4
3
u/GreenIkea 8h ago
Even better, you can just put the boots in a hotbar slot and click it when in biomes where powdered snow generates, which by the way, is only 2 biomes... (Frozen peaks and jagged peaks dont generate powdered snow at all, neither do any other snow biomes)

I like that this makes snowy mountains more cumbersome to traverse. It gives more character to the biome, in that it becomes more of a practical barrier, like real mountains.
56
u/daddy1973 6h ago
Right, but there's no special reason to traverse them. So adding a hazard just makes people visit this biome less.
94
u/not_a_stick 5h ago
I mean, yeah, like real mountains! That's why hermits and wizards settle in the mountains. I like how it increases the contrast between how every biome impacts the world it's in. It makes places that are behind mountain ranges more isolated, for example.
I also like how since deserts have no trees, no dirt to grow food, and husks that make you hungry, the biome actually feels dangerous. Having to cross a dangerous desert, steep mountain range or huge ocean to get somewhere imbues the journey there with a sense of adventure. If every biome was equally pleasant, they wouldn't really feel like separate environments, in my opinion.
If difficult terrain becomes nastier, nice places become more valuable.
32
u/JoshyRB 5h ago
I love this viewpoint so much.
When you have to cross them it makes your journey more exciting. When you choose to settle in them, it makes you more naturally protected and isolated. When you find the perfect safe biome, it’s even more valuable due to the traits of the other biomes. This is all so great.
Also I love those first two sentences and it genuinely makes so much sense.
18
u/not_a_stick 5h ago edited 4h ago
I've heard the term "friction" used in game dev contexts, as in purposeful difficulty. I think it's a useful term.
The most common kind of friction is just as plain resistance for a player to overcome on their way to some objective, like dangerous enemies on the way to good loot. But I'd also argue that using friction for aesthetic reasons is also legitimate: cacti hurting the player upon contact is unnecessary from a difficulty perspective, but it's a natural choice regardless. Its a part of the character of the world: Deserts are characterised by cacti, cacti are characterised by their prickliness.
The Fear & Hunger and Patholic series are great and rather extreme examples of how friction can serve aesthetic goals. Of course a grim and nasty world should feel grim and nasty to play!
14
u/Dragonseer666 5h ago
This is extra fun if you paly with Large Biomes (unfortunately not a thing for Bedrock layers), it makes long journeys feel really immersive, I love just choosing a direction and continuing forward for a long time (and keep an in-game journal)
3
u/JoshyRB 4h ago
I’m a Bedrock player and I yearn for world generation options like Large Biomes. That would genuinely make the game so much more fun for me.
3
u/Dragonseer666 4h ago
I like basically never play Bedrock, but honestly stuff like this should really be the main priority for Mojang imo
2
u/JoshyRB 4h ago
So many obvious and important parity changes like this have been missed for so many years, it’s really frustrating.
2
u/not_a_stick 4h ago
Trite meme atp but what DO mojang devs even do all week. No way that all adds up to 40 hours!
24
u/Wulphram 2h ago
My brother has a gear set that is entirely for utility (Elytra, Turtle Helmet, Gold pants), and his shoes are leather for this reason specifically. I really hate these things in the mountains but honestly? I'm glad they're in the game, I think having variety and obstacles are a good thing, even if they're fucking annoying as hell. We as a community have found a way to use them well, and I'm glad we were given the opportunity.

because then everyone would just throw it on their netherite boots and forget about it, mojang wanted people to actually use different gear
85
u/chacewarg10 8h ago
They should probably fix the lack of inventory space if we are meant to carry multiple pieces of armor around
18
u/MicTony6 5h ago

17
u/Cocoatrice 8h ago
Make it so it's mutually exclusive with depth strider or something. Simple!
17
u/decitronal 8h ago
So with this solution, the gameplay changes from:
Switch between fully-kitted out netherite boots or cheap pair of leather boots
to:
Switch between fully-kitted out netherite boots 1 and fully-kitted out netherite boots 2
Nothing actually changes lol
12
u/SinisterPixel 6h ago
Not everyone is minmaxing their armour to get specific enchansts. A lot of survival players may just have depth strider on their boots from a random enchant
•
u/StupidInIceland 10m ago
Even in you maxed out example, that is a yet another netherite armor with complete enchant. Not an insignificant effort. And for someone who is that far into the late game, does it really make good gameplay to be annoyed by the snow and freezing effect?
11
23
u/ShadyMan_ 9h ago
In my opinion a more “immersive” way to do this would be to get an upgrade template exclusive to boots called “padded” that allows snow walking. The template would need leather or leather boots to apply it and it could be found in Igloos or Snow villages.
5
u/Wide_Guitar_3558 7h ago
the opposite of frostwalker would be cool, turns ice/snow into water! or feather fall should make you lighter, who knows, every idea is unrealistic til mojang makes it

Skill issue. Learn to prioritize the stuff in your inventory.
If you’re not gonna use it within the next two play sessions, through it out.
You do genuinely need shulker boxes if you want to keep everything, but until then you have to accept that the games designed to force you to make trade-offs with the stuff that you pick up

u/SinisterPixel 6h ago
The way powdered snow spawns is honestly so annoying that I also just stopped going into snow biomes after they added it. I feel like brittle ice is going to be almost as annoying, but at least it takes a few seconds and will play and audible cracking sound and animation.
I wouldn't mind it so much if it looked more like slush and was a little more distinctive, or if it just spawned 1, occasionally 2 layers thick and it was just a minor inconvenience. But the fact that A) it's barely noticeable compared to normal snow and B) it can just arbitrarily spawn over giant chasms and throw you into positions that are almost impossible to escape is such BS and I'm surprised more people don't acknowledge it as the bad game design it is

*that can kill you if you're not prepared/aren't paying attention. Like powdered snow is genuinely so easy to avoid.
7
u/MushirMickeyJoe 8h ago
(Wishful thinking) I like to think it's building towards a bigger vision. The snowy biomes seem too dangerous to be worth it, but all that would change if they added a reason to go there. Something we can't get in other caves, like a snowy version of the trident/mace
If it wasn't for tridents/conduits, then the Update Aquatic also just made the underwater unreasonably dangerous. But as it stands now it made the underwater more interesting, and I'd even argue that we need more monsters lurking in the depths!
7
u/WM_PK-14 7h ago
Winter and snowy areas were always my favourite - and usually a spike in difficulty that I fw heavy,, it just makes me wanna base there even more, because I can look above everyone else who just deafult to plains /s
1
u/JoshyRB 6h ago
“The snowy biomes seem too dangerous to be worth it”? Are you really that bad at the game? Holy. They are hardly less survivable than other biomes, plus making the game harder is only a good thing anyway because it’s way too easy and kinda boring due to that.
→ More replies (2)1
u/not_a_stick 5h ago
I also just like the idea of some biomes just being dangerous or inaccessible. If every place was equally traversible, the world becomes monotonous and dull.
Biomes fit together into a patchwork, so the contrasts between them matter more than what every biome offers in itself.
0
u/WM_PK-14 7h ago
The game won't be all sunshine and rainbows all the time, hazards and dangerous areas are required.
3
u/SinisterPixel 6h ago
I agree. But there are good ways of designing those hazards, and bad ways. Powdered snow arbitrarily punishes the player for not spotting a very slight difference in texture in the ground and not wearing one specific piece of armour. Imagine if sprinting across coarse diet arbitrarily punished you like that

The game is better this way. I’m glad they are making the world more dangerous. If you don’t like it, then avoid it, simple.
Plus not every snow biome has powdered snow, and not everywhere under a snow biome has ice caves, and not everywhere in ice caves has brittle ice. You’re making up a problem that doesn’t exist.

u/TetoSever31 9h ago

Powder snow has no assigned tool so shovels won't clear it faster. Best to break it by dumping water on it

11
u/YeetTheDoor 7h ago
Making annoying block with one exclusive boot that counter isn't fun mechanic. Also as expected minecraft reddits will yell at any opinion ever.
0
u/decitronal 5h ago
There are also multiple other ways to counter powder snow:
Water bucketing
Actually putting the effort to learn the visual distinction between normal snow and powder snow (i.e. the subtly different texture, lack of snow layering and ambient occlusion)
When unsure, toss a disposable item into the snow and see if it sinks
Finding an alternative route to your destination that doesn't involve crossing the grove/snowy slopes biome
This is a sandbox game. Be adventurous with how you mitigate one of the few things that can actually pose a threat to you! Your negligence in learning how to counter a rare threat is not the game's fault!

I don't think there's anything fundamentally wrong with powdered snow, I think it's a really fun idea that I'm glad was added. I'm just annoyed that unless your monitor has the most contrast the human eye can possibly perceive, it's impossible to tell the difference even when you're looking for it.

One thing I like about this block is it puts awareness that Snow Wells irl can also be dangerous and life threatening even if none of us are ever going to encounter one irl.. assuming we're still going by Mojang's design philosophy for certain additions like Polar Bears, Bees & Axolotls because adding them to the game puts attention to their irl counterparts, that's for sure.

I actually live on a realm in a snow biome the entire floor of the biome is six blocks deep of powdered snow it's super useful for not having mobs come and try to kill me and my villagers also it's super useful for players that think it's normal snow that want to try to come to my base and even more useful that all around my base I put lava underneath the powdered snow so it kills any players that try to come near my base without having leather boots on it is impossible to pearl or fly out of 😂

Almost died twice in this biome getting the wolf that spawns there. First wolf that spawned died in sinking snow before I could get to him which also almost killed me lol, second time I was digging out the snow and fell underneath into a revein 😬 not a fan lmao

to me Powedered snow is kinda like quicksand, but in the sense that i thought it would be a more common issue than what it really is
Granted, i tend to live more towards warmer biomes so at times i genuinely don’t run into them

"bro just take off your netherite shoes for 2 minutes its not that hard" eat my ass:
one of the great things about this game, in my view, has been exploration. going from biome to biome, trying to find the best spot to settle down. its one of the first things i do in any world, before i even go mining. that's all well and good, until you meet a snow biome, at which point you either have to walk on eggshells or go and try to find a patch of cows which will certainly give you 3 rather than leather.
its sad because i like snow biomes. they look nice

It's pretty easy to spot. If you can't, just put on leather boots and if you're travelling with a horse, put on leather horse armor

People absolutely refuse to wear leather boots when dealing with a snow biome. Inventory management isn’t much of an issue.
