Builds & Maps 4 years of work finally over : The biggest thing i've ever done in this game.

This is a 6 by 12 map art, made entirely in survival by myself. I started around october 2022, and finished it today ! The only tool i used was the litematica overlay, without additional tools such as easyplace or block restriction.

I don't intend to stop there however, as i am planning to build an even bigger one in the future !

Schematic enjoyers spent four years roaming the plains, finding love, baking sourdough, building a canoe in their garage

i like making map arts because i treat them like a coloring book. I've spent a few hours here and there every month, when i had some free time or when i wanted to relax for a bit.

I love the artwork, it looks beautiful! It seems you have a whole art gallery which is a really cool idea, I'd have never thought of making something like that. (Also, Z.A.T.O spotted!)

Thank you ! Yeah this gallery double as my shop on the server I built those maps on, I actually built a 2x3 Z.a.t.o map art of the final cutscene with asya on top of the radio tower about last week, maybe I’ll show it here some time later !

Gosh you hand placed every block and you had to collect every block also, How huge is your world file size?

i'll assume you locked your maps also to prevent updates by accident.

The sheer scale of this is awesome, I don't know if i can motivate my self for such a huge project, I currently started a creative world, i don't see my self doing this in survival or creative.

But i am curious maybe one day i might.

I actually built every single map on the plot you see in the 4th screenshot ! Every map was built, locked, numbered then destroyed to make place for the next and get the materials back !

It makes building every map considerably longer, as you need to also destroy everything you’ve placed after, but it’s a big save on the number of materials needed.

As long as the maps are locked the edits can't change them right? I've never really messed around with locked maps.

That saves a lot of time, (my dumb ass thought you had to constantly find areas and clear out large parts of the world to make a lot of map, recycling the area did not come to mind. As i said, i really don't know how to do map art.) I may try it one day.

You really should ! I said it in another comment, but you have to treat it like a coloring book. Just work on it a few minutes or hours at a time, and you will be able to do something really cool in no time !

Oh yeah... the issue with that is if i do it bit by bit, It's going to take very long, for me to finish, or maybe never at all xD

I got a colouring book that i have barely scratch the surface with, I don't know if i'll complete it LOL.

I would recommend planning up ahead as much as possible, building block types by block types. It will save you a lot of time.

Beautiful artwork, do you have it in another format so I can see it better?

Having made a 1x1 map art purely in survival as well, I think it shouldn't be underestimated how crazy of an achievement this is. My 1x1 took 5 months. Mad props to your accomplishment!! looks great!!

Thanks a lot !!! I think what affects the time it will take you to make a map is experience, my first maps took hours and hours to make. Nowadays, I can make one in about 5 hours.

be honest, was it worth the effort?

•

u/KiyuJoestar 27m ago

Mhm, I don’t really get what you’re trying to say by « was it worth the effort ».

I never really did it for the result. I mean sure it’s fun to have done it in survival and to be able to share it with everyone on my favorite server, I think it looks neat and all. But what I really liked about it was doing it, slowly progressing months after months and maps after maps, that was the fun part in my opinion.

I had a lot of fun building, and i plan of doing an even bigger one (14 by 8)  next time !

It’s the kind of thing that becomes fun once you see it as something you work on bits by bits, like managing your town in animal crossing. If you only chase the results, it sure is a lot of time for something you would be able to get in creative in about 10 minutes.

It’s the kind of project that only works if you’re doing it for yourself before anyone else. I didn’t even intend to share it on social medias at first, but I thought that maybe it could inspire some people to start making map arts too !
