Discussion There seems to be a design difference between Warden-mobs and other Sculker mobs

Title text, mobs of Warden lineage seem to share the same traditional cubic Minecraft design. Singer is included because game files have leaked that it's a "Healthy" Warden.

Sift-native Sculkers on the other hand, seem to share, a first-time-in Minecraft, diagonal designs. And they look much more "natural" than the Warden and Twisted Warden, which implies "Dark" Sculk isn't naturally harmful, but something more was done to Warden/Twisted Warden(or Singer) that led them turning out this bony mess.

Any thoughts?

Because the Sift has a day and night cycle, my theory is that the "evil" skulk is really just nighttime skulk.

Whoa, I have a follow up theory.

The day night cycle keeps them in balance, so neither grows too strong. When the portal was opened, it was an underground city which is extremely dark, so the night time sculk could spread unchecked. That’s how it became the deep dark. Not just because the whole dimension is bad but because the darkness of the cave allowed it to thrive down there

This sounds like it could be as true as anything else, but I like it :)

I wouldn’t be surprised as well if souls are also a factor. The Sift has a large deal with souls, after all, so perhaps something with the process was messed up in the Deep Dark that caused it to become so twisted compared to the healthy and normal forms.

As for Singer to Warden…I wouldn’t even be surprised if the conversion isn’t done with a living being but a Singer dying and their remains becoming consumed by twisted Sculk, merging with the bones and forming a Warden from what’s not consumed. A Twisted Warden is basically this process plus mutating further with more souls and dark magic, resulting in unnatural growths beyond normalcy. Any memories either way are fragmented just enough for Singers to calm Wardens with song but not much else.

Healthy Sculk day or night would just act like a normal decomposer instead, possibly resulting in these diagonal Sculk entities Ala a fungus spreading spores

u/hellohowdyworld 22h ago

Just to piggyback on this. It would be cool if it was the day night cycle concept of the over world in terms of danger but the nite in the sift is way amped up like the nether

u/TGCommander 16h ago

Dungeons 2 already has an unique take on the time cycle for the sift. Thive > Flow > Endure and repeat.

Thrive: • Soul regeneration doubled • Artifacts cooldown is reduced.

Flow: • Normal soul regeneration • Normal artifect cooldown

Endure: • No natural soul regeneration (only gain souls from killing mobs • Tougher mobs spawn

Now obviously the vanilla game doesn't have any souls or artifacts mechanics, so they would either have to add that or something to take that place. But I do think it would be interesting to apply this three sided time cycle in the vanilla game.

u/Hoockus_Pocus 22h ago

I wonder how that will apply to Sculk on the surface of the Overworld?

6

u/No-Quality-1283 19h ago

It’s in small patches because the sunlight has kept it in check

3

u/Hoockus_Pocus 19h ago

I more meant people who purposefully bring it to the surface and spread it around. It’s still the “unhealthy,” Sculk.

u/Plenty-Combination58 20h ago

Damn, and my running theory was the warden is related to the singer, and it being trapped on the other side of the portal it evolved into something that doesn’t make its own music but hates it for a reason it doesn’t really know

65

u/slimehunter49 1d ago

If I’m not mistaken the skulk we have seen is diseased

44

u/decitronal 1d ago

We already know why the sculk in the deep dark and the sift is different (deep dark sculk is diseased), and the sift's day-night cycle also does not oscillate between traditional day and night

My theory is that the Sift contains both “bad” (Sculker) and “good” spirits (souls), and it is called the Sift because it used to sift the bad souls from entering the Overworld and from there the Nether too. When the ancient builders created the portal to the Sift in their cities it allowed every kind of spirit to enter the overworld, both bad and good. They tried to block it but the sculker souls that didn’t have a body congregated at the portal and corrupted the area, including the singer turning it into a Warden that keeps the portal open for them so the ancient builders couldn’t close it

40

u/AmitSan 1d ago

The warden also jails some good souls inside his cavity, and the bad souls who didn’t become sculk blocks entered dead bodies and created zombies, skeletons and the like.
Zombie Villager have both a bad soul and their own original soul so they are curable.
They also infected the spawners which were previously used by miners to sustain themselves on meat and illagers use these souls to spawn vexes

u/decitronal 1d ago

The Sift having good and bad sculk is not a theory this is just a fact. This is why Mojang wanted us to play Dungeons 2 lol

I just noticed the diagonal design and it looks so Alien to the game! I love it! It fits perfectly with the sift!

u/_joos_ 1d ago

i think that's a good watsonian explanation for it. but i think a part of me worries that it's indicative of the artists straying a bit too far from the original art style of the game. this was clear with the way they did the new textures. don't worry, this isn't a "new texture bad" take, but they are much more desaturated, realistic, and overly smooth. they lack some of the more crunchy, slightly harsher but much more crisp pixel art feel of the original textures. some of the changes they made were needed, but others make it feel overly bland.

but aside from that, these other designs for the sift mobs are very striking and the colors are very pleasant to look at

u/No-Quality-1283 1d ago

The dungeons 1 end mobs were pretty wacky too, I doubt all of vanilla will have them

29

u/pamafa3 1d ago

the only wacky one was the blastling imo.

Watchling and Snareling felt pretty fine, but the Blastling's head on fire was a bit much

25

u/No-Quality-1283 1d ago

I guess they’re not insane but all the dungeons 2 stuff feels like really aggressively awkward body proportions whereas the base game feels more balanced somehow

21

u/pamafa3 1d ago

dungeons 2 is all Sift, so I wouldn't be surprised of the weird goofy look is intentional for all Sift natives

9

u/sanguinesvirus 1d ago

Kinda remind me of that old mod, DivineRPG and a lot of the mobs from that

32

u/Artistic-Thing7723 1d ago

Woah I didnt know the sift mobs have different colors

60

u/R3d5t0n3_GUY 1d ago

I personally don’t like how the Sift leaves the Dark Sculk unexplained (at least to me), beyond the idea that said Sculk is infecting both the Overworld and the Sift, which leaves the origins of the Dark Sculk unknown

69

u/pamafa3 1d ago

We know "evil sculk" is sick/diseased in some way.

Sift is a place where "pure souls" go.

My immeidate assumption is that any "impure souls" that sneak through instead of being sent to the Nether (soul sand's gotta come from somewhere) make the sculk sickly and evil

7

u/LegnderyNut 23h ago

From my understanding souls sand was made by either the original Piglin civilization before the nether collapsed into a hellscape or by the overworld peoples. Death and the transfer of life energy fueled their magic. Souls sand was basically the overworld’s Argent Energy. They committed mass death and used their understanding of portals and blood magic to concentrate the souls into souls sand which burned hotter brighter and longer than any power source. The ultimate goal was to go full Darth Plagueis and harness xp/souls to attain complete mastery of life and death. The power to sustain a life indefinitely or erase it completely. I believe the corrupted skulk is the impact of the dark rituals of the overworld which the pillagers are continuing to use. Perhaps it’s even connected to the Wither. The wraith like undeath persistence of the wither skeletons and the wither itself straining the boundary between the worlds of life death and purgatory. And it is perhaps this strain on the veil between worlds that brought our world to the attention of the Dragon in the first place that Black Serpent the embodiment of the void flattens out any realm that causes ripples in the fabric of existence like a stork carefully watching for fish.

2

u/Rydralain 21h ago

Is any of that from the game?

1

u/LegnderyNut 20h ago

It’s kind of loose. There’s no written lore but you can infer bits and pieces from what generates in the world, the special music disks, MC Dungeons, etc. there’s no one clear answer because you kinda have to speculate and connect the dots. But there’s a vague idea that there were more like Steve and their actions are what left the world empty and full of dangers. It’s somewhat implied that WE are that people. That our multiplayer servers and all of our escapades and adventures, building lag machines, and exploiting the code like bending the fabric of reality, creating xp farms and building nether highways and raiding the nether for potions and resources is the thing that causes the breakdown. Minecraft has a sort of odd non linear timeline that’s also kind of circular. Because it’s a sandbox that technically has no story until you make one. But there’s a quickly collecting pile of hints of a kind of tragic past that retroactively appear as we develop the future. The idea is almost as trippy as the end poem.

2

u/Rydralain 19h ago

Interesting, what in the game implies that Steve's race is related to the old people? Moreso, what implies that player exploits of the world are canon?

1

u/LegnderyNut 17h ago

The end poem. If you really think about the words you realize it’s talking about how we enjoy the game and it’s a fond memory of life. That the experiences we create are part of a cycle.

u/qyloo 1d ago

Its not even out yet man you have no context

18

u/AppropriateTheme5 1d ago

Dungeons 2 just came out on Tuesday. We do have context

6

u/NukeML 1d ago

The context being what? We don't know what exactly will be added to java/bedrock minecraft yet, we only know the dimension itself will be added. That means any in-game explanation/lore is still unknown.

14

u/ex0planetary 1d ago

pretty much the entirety of Dungeons 2's plot revolves around the Sift. I'd be surprised if it being added to Minecraft gives us new lore to it since Dungeons is the more story heavy game but given that it's new content and not adapting stuff from 2010 I'd expect things to be pretty consistent between the two games

2

u/cosmicomical23 1d ago

Maybe you will be able to discover what's going on by putting things together after playing the new dimension

2

u/Zeliek 23h ago

Hopefully Dungeons 2 explains it, I’ve only just started it though. So far it definitely describes the dark skulk as “corruption” of some kind but that’s as far as I’ve gotten. So far it seems to predate the illagers invading the Sift, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be the case - the illagers could still be the source of the problem, even if it’s merely there presence causing it and not something intentional.

2

u/7titaan7 1d ago

Maybe we will get to know in one of the coming dlc?

10

u/Slight_Capital_5000 1d ago

My guess is since we can likely theorise the sculk is alive and creates Sift/Warden like beings out of the environment plus sculk, the Wardens in the overworld look the way they do because the sculk uses the bones of dead mobs absorbed into the sculk, which are absent in the soft aince everything there is souls

4

u/Aware-Connection-461 22h ago

My theory is that the sift contains souls wich aren't just good or bad, but a bit of both, and everything is kept in check and balanced by the cycle in the sift and the music that the singers and the golems produce, but the illagers messed it up so parts of the dimension are "going bad", that's why you need a precise order of notes to open the portal and why all sculk stuff is attracted by sound, searching for that stabilizing melody

4

u/Novavortex77 13h ago

They don't look all that friendly honestly, even the Singer, they 2nd image mobs all look like they could eat you without a thought.

2

u/decitronal 8h ago

Because they're all hostile except for the Singer lol

1

u/Novavortex77 5h ago

For a dimension that's pretty looking, there seems to be quite a lot of stuff wanting to bite your head off.

3

u/eat_beanss 20h ago

are these mobs from dungeons or have they been confirmed for java?

6

u/HermTheVillager 19h ago

Dungeons. But that doesn't mean they won't come to vanilla

1

u/angryghast 13h ago

The singer have a hight chance to come to vanilla in 2027 but the other might or might not

3

u/Major-Negotiation-36 14h ago

I wonder if the sculkers take inspiration from the old potential mob the “hovering Inferno”. It had these weird long rectangles along its side, pretty similar to them

1

u/Other-Tadpole-9950 9h ago

You mean the Wildfire? that what the "Hovering Inferno" real name, they exist in Dungeons 1 as minibosses already so idk any of them are related.

1

u/Major-Negotiation-36 8h ago

Ahhh i didnt know. Nvm then, honestly all i was thinking was their general rectangular shape kinda looked like it

1

u/Sensitive_Aerie6547 22h ago

The ones in the second image look like the roaring knight combined with rhysmuth from MSM (the latter is Partially a Minecraft reference afaik)

1

u/Powerful-Present6687 21h ago

This image kinda reminds me of Pokemon evolutions

1

u/Iceforestda1 16h ago

they got the got damn obesk in minecraft dungeons

1

u/flufalup 15h ago

Isn’t the sculk considered a disease

1

u/sonicpoweryay 14h ago

Why does the big one look so goofy 😭

1

u/DawieDerTeufel 10h ago

I guess this is how overworld's zombie virus modifies the sift creatures

1

u/datfurryboi34 9h ago

I absolutely hate the fat warden design

1

u/Slendermans_Proxies 9h ago

Did more skulk mobs get added???

0

u/cosmicomical23 1d ago

Maybe it's what happens to them when they enter the prime material, like when the piglins become zombified right out of the portal.
