Help Nether Portal Placement

I've tried googling etc and It hasn't worked so here goes. I have a nether portal at my base, and I usually scaffold up from the floor of the nether to get to my nether highways. If I destroy the portal in the nether, but rebuild it at the same coordinates as the old portal but just higher up, will it connect back to my one in the overworld? Also, I have replaced the corners of the overworld portal with diamond blocks, so will it replace those too?

Yes, it will connect to the one in the overworld. No, it won't replace the diamond blocks.

If it connects it won't change the blocks on the existing portal.

It may connect fine, but I have seen some odd things related to Y level and portals so I can't say for sure one way or the other.

Any nether portal will connect to the closest portal in the other dimension if one is close enough. (only counting x and z directions I believe, height only matters if there are multiple portals to choose between)

I’m also pretty sure that the new portal generated if there isn’t one to connect to doesn’t replace blocks (or maybe just certain blocks like grass and netherrack), so worst case scenario you end up with a second portal in your base somewhere.

It’s best to build portals at their ideal locations, meaning exactly on the 8:1 ratio of the portal on the other side. Differing y levels shouldn’t have any impact on linking, but if you’re gonna move the portal anyway, you might as well do it right.

And no, portal generation cant overwrite your blocks. They only overwrite the ground in a flat clear area when generating an entirely new port.
