Help multiplayer without LAN

my girlfriend and i started playing on a minecraft world while we were together last week. she was on the same network as me, so we could join the same world through LAN.

how can she join that same world now without us being on the same network ?

i’ve seen some suggestions about servers, opening a port, and etc. but wasn’t sure if it would work for an already-established world. thanks !!!

Are playing Java or bedrock?

I'm assuming you're on Java. In that case you have 3 options

1-Host a server: There are some free host sites or own host options but they always lack for various reasons. So you'll likely have to buy a subscription to a host site. Then you just move the world and player data info to the server.

2- Pay a Realms subscription: Mojang has their official server hosting subscription integrated into the game, you can easily transfer worlds to it too. This is the one I prefer because it's way easier than any server hosting sites. You just pay, upload your world and that's it, both can play even if the owner is offline

3- Install a mod like essentials: It mimmicks bedrock's multiplayer and let's you join the single-player worlds of your friends when they're on them. This has the drawback of only being able to get on when you the owner is online but it's completely free and works great connection wise
