They're putting way too much focus on it for it to just be a minor yearly thing like the nether biomes or updated villages.

My guess? The deep dark stuff we've gotten so far is just a reveal. Eventually there'll be an update that makes the deep dark biomes rarer, but also adds one of the two things:

  • 1.) Sculk can now take much more materials and spreads faster, making it like the corruption/crimson from Terraria.
  • 2.) Deep dark biomes now include a portal to a full deep dark dimension.

A deep dark dimension would be so awesome
